I am an English singer contemplating trying to fix up a tour of USA East Coast folk venues (house concerts and festivals basically) and would appreciate some advice on who to contact. To leave enough time to make the arrangements, I am thinking of February 2006.

Lots of the DC folk know me already and hopefully can vouch for my credentials. I have a website. So what would you get if you wanted me to appear?

•        Someone who has spent many years collecting songs, both in the UK and the US
•        Someone who has a good understanding and love for the material
•        Mainly Southern English folksongs – mainly unaccompanied but some with melodeon accompaniment
•        Some Appalachian ballads with banjo accompaniment
•        A few folk tales and tall stories
•        Ballads, music hall songs, comedy songs, lively choruses, etc
•        Someone willing to lead workshops – e.g. music of English gypsies, English versions of songs found in the USA

I would be willing to sleep on floors and am completely house-trained!

Gwilym, get to DC (or Maryland, etc.) for Feb 5, and you can come to the FSGW minifest. There's no money in it, (well, of course, not -- it's folk music) but it's a real good time.

Gwilym, as I've indicated via PM I've initiated contact with the local coffeehouse. Certainly we should hold a Mudcat Gathering on the occasion of your visit, as well, if we can get it all arranged! I have plenty of sleepover space.

Hi Gwilym,

If you could make it across to the other (left) coast I'm sure I could find you a concert gig or house concert in Seattle. Lots of folk music here. Also good possibilities in Portland, OR, Bellingham, WA, and Vancouver, B.C.

I would not recommend the Northeast US in Feb. The weather is just too unpredictable. If you want to see something of the countryside do not come Nov.-Mar.

I'm looking now at March 2006. I have some contacts in DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania, so I am hoping to build on that. I take the point about the weather and the geography, but March is about the first time I will be able to get there. I'm open to suggestions of who to contact around the DC, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York state, etc areas. The West Coast will have to wait for a return tour! Thanks for any help or suggestions.

My thoughts are taking better shape on this now. The best time seems to be the first half of April 2006 leading up to and possibly just past Easter. Good Friday in 2006 is 14th April. I'm also thinking more about the geography of the trip, so probably starting south and working north would be the best bet. So within those perameters, I would welcome any enquiries about events/bookings/organisers in Virginia - West Virginia - Maryland - Delaware - Pennsylvania - New York State - New Jersey. My 6th January posting will tell you what you would get. Grateful for any help that Mudcatters can give me. Many thanks.

PS I will be in Washington DC this July and will be doing a song evening there.

Your site looks terrific! Lots I'd like to explore.

Keep us posted about DC in July, I'll try to be up there.

I'm here in NC, home of the Southern Folklore Collection at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, among the many musical and folklorical gems of the area. Consider coming down this far, and you won't be sorry! You've been to the mountains, I see: more to see and hear there, plus the wealth of the Piedmont.

We have a strong community of traditional old-time (fiddle and banjo) players, singers, dancers, and I'd be happy to help lead you in the right directions, and feed you well in the bargain!
