This weekend a group of about 20 Northumbrian Pipers from all round the world are arriving in New Zealand, for a musical tour of the South Island (Lord of the Rings country). We'll be staying in Youth Hostels and giving concerts as we go.
We end the tour by flying to Auckland for the Folk Festival there at the end of January, doing a workshop and a concert or two.
While this will be a great experience, it means I'll be off-line for the next 3 weeks.
How will I ever survive without my daily mudcat fix?

Well we are enjoying ourselves. We gave a concert in Wanaka last night, we're about to give an afternoon one at a little pub here in Arrowtown, where gold was found in the 1860s, and tonight there's another concert in Queenstown.

Hi Chris,
We're on the last bit of the tour - currently in Kaikoura and most of the group are going on a whale-watch boat trip shortly.
When we get back to Christchurch we're booked into a recording studio, to make a CD of our concert.
We fly to Auckland on Friday.

Sorry, the tour finishes at Auckland Folk Festival this weekend so all the pipers will be heading back to their own countries by the time you arrive.
But you could always visit us in Hawke's Bay! And Helen, the organiser, is in Auckland.

Well, it's all over - the pipers are all on their way home again after 16 days in a bus and then 3 days at the Auckland Folk Festival.
I can't remember how many concerts we gave - some formal and others impromptu. We are now all good friends, though many were strangers at the beginning of the tour. There were 21 pipers, the youngest aged 12, and a bass player. Then halfway through we were joined by Pete Grassby with his collection of melodeons.
Most of them are keen to return and another tour is being planned already, for 2009.
