Subject: BS: Women's euphemisms for 'penis'
From: gecko
Date: 07 Jan 05 - 07:25 PM

We've all heard many examples of the terminology - usually of an affectionate nature - that males use to refer to their appendages. I am interested to hear from women about the terms they use. This is a serious enquiry (!) and I hope to put some of the answers to good use in a workshop I'm currently writing in retaliation to one I heard last year at Mary River in the Northern Territory, Australia.
Yours in Unity

Do you think that what women call them is different than what men call them? Or are you presuming that because men seem to have lots of sly nicknames for women's genitals that women recognize but don't use themselves that the reverse is true?

Hmmm. I'll have to think about that one.

Maybe it's just that women aren't quite as fixated on men's genital areas as men seem to be on women's.

We just don't think about them as much as you fellas do. I asked a few women friends,
"What do we call willies?" and they said, "willies".
There are the terms used by mothers of little boys, of course:
ding-dong, (sorry too important for lower case) Ding-Dong, Doodle, Pee-Pee, Diddle-do, Woo-Woo.

The ones I like best come from men - "Winged Avenger" and "Symbol of Manly Pride"
Good luck gecko.
(and in case you're wondering, I've heard the obvious name for my man's one.)
Cheers, Joy

Mother read a book about a British MP, and thereafter called it by the book's title, "The Independent Member".
A group of little girls seeing their baby brother being changed called it the sixth finger.
A friend of mine, as a child, called it a tinklebag.
I have used the term little friend, since it does seem to have a mind of it's own.
And for two years, now, I have been thinking, we're going to war in Iraq to prove once and for all that George W Bush has a bigger do hickey than his father.

When I worked in the Forest Service the guys used to refer to their tally whackers. Their term, not mine.

This reminds me of when a bunch of them drove down to Seattle to go to a topless bar. They came back, all excited and full of stories about the place. There were two women on the crew, and the other one, a bit older and more worldly then I, finally lowered the boom on them.

"Boobs! That's all you can talk about is boobs! I'm sick of hearing about boobs!" They were so surprised by her outburst that they did shut up. They made another trip back a couple of weeks later, but the more mature in the group were willing to admit that the first time was best, that repeated exposure to such places rapidly lost it's charm.

Now what were you asking about what women call pricks?

;-)

Courage, as in: "me 'usband's got no courage in 'im"

When I was little, we referred to it as "ding-a-ling" and "weenie"

How's about "Jelly roll", like in the blues songs?

Well, Karen and I had the conversation regarding what to use for the boys. I can't see the penis crap and she wasn't one to use it either so I asked her what did she call a dick.....and she said "A dick." However she wouldn't agree to using that with the kids as she thought it too crude. Now to me, it just made sense because I'd put money on the most popular street slang being "dick."......and all of you guys named Dick, I apologize, but it is the term of choice!!!

Anyway.......It's a long story, but we decided on "Hoozhee." Don't ask. It worked well but nowadays I have overheard Michael on numerous occasions using "dick." The kid has picked up way too much from his Old Man as I've heard it used as a term of derision as well. I keep meaning ro have a talk with his Dad about it............................

I had a boyfriend once who called it his 'pinkle'. I've never called them anything much (since I find they don't need you to call them by name to respond!), but had to find a term when I had a baby son. I find a lot of the common euphemisms a little distasteful, but settled for 'willie' because it seemed to be what all the little boys around used and it seemed that it would be better for him to be calling it the same thing as his contemporaries.

I suppose we must be odd parents, but we simply called genetalia either "penis" or "vagina" with our kids. Why do people feel the need to dumb down terms or create euphemisms for their children? I have never understood that one, indeed, I find the "naming" of body parts with other names at times to be rather embarrassing.

The first time I heard the expression 'meat and two veg' it was said by a woman. While an old friend of mine's wife said it reminded her of the little plastic bag containing the neck and giblets that are inside a frozen turkey. No I don't know how it got there!

We followed the same policy. It worked perfectly well. I think it is better to start from the right name, and overcome any stupidity about being embarassed because one is endowed with ordinary human equipment. Then you can add nicknames on as a frill if you want to.

We use 'willie', but I've known a 'Cedric' and a 'Percy' (as in pointing Percy at the porcelain). The commonest response though, is to point and laugh.

I think it depends on who it belongs to, and how he uses it.....that is in the intimate way of course......

Otherwise in ordinary conversation...I call it a prick or his tackle.

Ah, but "family jewels" are not the same thing, at least, I always distinguished this as the propulsion unit. (As opposed to the pocket rocket)   :)

NONE of this has to do with what small children call their genetalia, and everything to do with what playful adults engage in.

Concluding line from an article by Richard Rhodes, entitled "What an Odd Organ," in which he details how the penis often does not behave in a manner that the man to whom it is attached wishes it would, e.g. becoming rampant at inappropriate moments or going south when its services are required:

"Having a penis is like owning a cat."

A gal once used to call it "Big Fella"---same as the Lone Ranger also called Silver--also between his legs.

Either that or she'd say, "Get 'em up, Scout!"----a reference to what Tonto used to say to his horse to get him going.

She had a thing for Fred Foy too. (the Lone Ranger's radio announcer---one of the best voices in early radio).

But that was a whole other era...

My daughters learned the terms penis, vagina and vulva. From the time they were old enough to wonder and ask about it all. We had a teacher in grade 1 or 2 call the house and ask why my youngest knew that term. Dolt. We told her that is was what the pee-pees are called in REAL life.

Do we need to start another thread to gather women's euphemisms for endometriosis, and another one for euphemisms for the slime found on old refrigerator- vegetables, and another for euphemisms used by women for the secret ambitions they have for wealth and comfort which they are not allowed to speak of? And what about euphemisms for Kirlian photography and de-gaussing?

Here in Aus, in the 1950s, little coctail frankfurts were always called "little boys". Might still be for all I know. It became so familiar as a title that there are all sorts of stories about women asking for them by that name and nobody laughing.

My brother was named "John Thomas". What were they thinking? Not as bad as the "Richard Head" I knew though.

Well, here are some cultural terms, not necessarily euphemisms, but maybe:

From England - John Thomas (penis) Lady Jane (vagina) D.H. Lawrence, just to be outrageous, titled a novel of his "John Thomas and Lady Jane". It was the first draft of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and is said to be actually a better book than the more famous one. I read both back in my early 20's, and I think JT & LJ is the better of the two.

From China - Jade Stem (penis), Turtle Head (penis), and numerous other poetic terms. These are from the taoist tradition. They saw sex not as a moral matter, but a health matter, and they were quite correct, in fact. Jade Gate was the vagina, which had, again, many other poetically descriptive names.

Common American slang - whanger, tool

Not hard to see how American civilization rates when you compare it to Taoism... :-)

I had a friend in my 20's, a guy who was so shy of woman that he could barely speak in their presence. He used to boast loudly to the other guys about his penis, however, when women were not around, and he referred to it as "Little Wally". This occasioned a lot of amusement among the rest of us, given the fact that "Litte Wally" had clearly never been let out of the stall, let alone been put through his paces on the track itself.

I think that Mellor's appendage was also referred to as "Droopy Ned" at the end of Lady Chatterley. I don't have a copy any more, but I think the last line is something about Droopy Ned wishing Lady Jane good night. Where is Peter T when we need him?
We use the terms penis and vagina with our childen too. We have no embarrassment and neither do they. I don't see anything wrong with referring to them in joky terms as well though. Plenty of our language has no colour at all.
I am a little baffled though why we should need a euphemism for any part of the body. I can't think of any body part which I would want to lose(although I don't miss my appendix much, I confess).

What a great response, especially from the blokes! What I'm really looking for are the names or terms that women use when they talk to each other. I'm not sure that men would know what these are or even be aware that women could possibly view male 'bits and pieces' with less affection and pride that they do themselves. So, sisters, take a deep breath and PM me if you don't want your cover blown!
Here are a few to get you going: 'nudger' - and what woman hasn't been 'nudged' awake at some ungodly hour; 'It' - as in "and then he got 'it' out; 'whatsit' - as in "he's always got his 'whatsit' in his hand".

Thanks for the 'Woody's' site info but I found it to be a puerile and sad sack site, if you'll pardon the pun, most probably written by men for men, with the aid of a good thesaurus!

Yours in Unity

Years ago, before graduate school, back when I had little time to do anything but laundry and change diapers, trashy romance novels were light-weight enough to read but not greive over if you didn't get to finish them. Now the writers of those bits of yellow "literature" found some pretty silly euphemisms for penis. I don't think they ever actually wrote the word. "Manhood" was a common one. It has been about 15 years since I read many of those, so changing times may have changed the euphemisms. But I'd be willing to bet they're still practicing poetic license in naming body parts.

Jeez perhaps I've lived a sheltered life, but it seems unlikely. Talk between females in pairs or groups can on occasion get just as over the top sometimes as "the mens", but I haven't noticed too much gender difference as to euphemisms, except perhaps less references as to some kind of weapon, but maybe I wasn't paying much attention. The whole tends to be discussed, with no particular obsession on the parts.

well, gecko...I suspect that there are many differences in what women say privately to other women. It no doubt depends on their social class, as well as how well they are acquainted and what MOOD they are in when the subject 'arises'. In the last analysis, most of the common terms no doubt get used, just as between men.

I really wish I could help, gecko, but I'm nearly 60. (can't be true!) and I just can't.
I was brought up in a working-class suburb, worked as a nurse, sang in pubs and classy restaurants, rode the Greyhound for a couple of months in America. Been in a lot of "powder rooms" "Dunnyies" and the like and got involved in lots of conversations with friends and strangers. Willies have come up, if you'll excuse the pun, at times, but I don't recall any particular names we used. Womens' private conversations can be as colourful and creative as those among men, I think, but they just doesn't seem to go in the same direction. This runs to the singing of bawdy songs as well. That's much more apparent among males.
Wish I could help. Sorry. Cheers, Joy

Well, I've heard some pretty lusty, raunchy conversations among women, I'll tell you. I do agree with some of the other gals on here: there seems to be a different quality about the discussion, at least compared to what I *think* men talk about.

As far as I know, I think of men discussing cup size, penis size, and other specific aspects of the body.

Women, in my experience, tend to discuss concepts more than parts, as in: "I just bet I know what you were doing." It seems to me that even though the discussion is very suggestive, there's still some room for the imagination to fill in the blanks (which probably makes such a conversation even more graphic).

I really haven't heard many alternative terms for penis. dick, cock, willie, all the usual names.
