I have one from the early 70s when they were copying Martin very closely - the lettering at the top of the peg head says "Takamine & Co, est. 1968" in fancy Martin-esqe script. I've had it repaired - body crack and two tuners shot - after acquiring it after it had been neglected for decades. Sounds good; action a bit too high. I'm not an expert, but as a gift, I'd not look too closely in its mouth...

I picked up a similar 70s era 12-string Takamine "lawsuit" guitar (exactly like a Martin, down to headstock shape and lettering). The guy selling it didn't know what it was and sold it to me for $75. Its easily the best guitar I or any of my friends owns. Not up to the standard of, say, a Taylor or such, but the action is smooth and easy, and it puts less strain on my fingers than my 6-string. Its a bit harder to fingerpick, but that's my own inexperience. Sounds great, with that full 12-string sound. I love the thing.

They are the best acoustic guitars ever. I have one and no-one who has played it has failed to say 'that's as good a guitar as I have played' Is it a step up? Thank your stars for how great a guitar you've lucked into. May it inspire you.

You are getting a good guitar. I have one in my "Collection" and although it does not compare sound wise to the Taylor, its still great, so welcome the gift and carry on learning -you wont regret it
Good luck

There was a rumor in the sixties that Martin sold a lot of their instrument wood to Takamine. The Martin copy was beautiful and played well. The only problem was quality control. Some of them were inspiring. Some not so much. Thank whoever gave it to you and play like the wind!
