Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Sep 13 - 06:38 PM "I Will Go On My Way" not in Patterson, "The Shaker Spiritual", but probably in Andrews, "The Gift to Be Simple," book also reprinted by Dover; unfortunately I don't have it. |
Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: ChanteyLass Date: 09 Sep 13 - 09:39 PM I see that the Boston Camerata's CD Simple Gifts has already been cited. I just dropped into this thread to say that it is the reason I finally broke down and bought a CD player. I had heard parts of it on Boston's public radio station and a program about it on Boston's public TV channel. I had to have that music, and it was the first music I wanted that was not available on cassette! |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: GUEST,Chris in Nashville Date: 27 Aug 08 - 01:23 PM OK, so I'm arriving six months late to this discussion, but I'm in a group in Nashville called Kindling Stone. Over the past couple of years, we've been starting to explore the wonderful (and prolific) Shaker music tradition. It's estimated that collectively, the Shakers wrote 10,000(!) songs and tunes or more, with only a fraction in publication or on recordings. In our process, we've had some contact with the brilliant scholar Dan Patterson who wrote The Shaker Spiritual, mentioned in this thread as an essential book for those interested in Shaker music and culture. I would add to this Early Shaker Spirituals and the Boston Camerata's recording Simple Gifts as good listening. William Coulter from the west coast has made some nice instrumental recordings of Shaker songs. Our group has had the pleasure of performing this summer and last in the Meeting House at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine, the only active Shaker community in the country. If you're ever in Maine, it's an amazing place to visit. Kindling Stone's debut recording has recently been released, and may be of interest to folks here. In addition to our own songs, it features selections from the Shaker and The Sacred Harp traditions. It's available at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/kindlingstone |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Haruo Date: 20 Jan 05 - 03:52 AM Q wrote «Don't forget the Indian Shaker Church. "John Slocum and the Indian Shaker Church," R. H. Ruby et al., 1996, Univ. Oklahoma Press» with a link which did not clarify that the Indian Shaker Church is not related except generically (they're both relgious sects) and in name (they're both called "Shakers") to the Mother Ann folks of the Eastern states. The Indian Shaker Church is very much a going concern (not celibate) in the Northwest; I have attended academic conferences where (Indian) Shaker dance took the place of Mr. Bush's inaugural invocation. I also knew a guy who was a lay preacher in a Methodist church (at Nooksack; he was raised Roman Catholic on the Crow Res) and his wife was an Indian Shaker clergywoman. Not sure if the Indian Shakers have any sect-specific musical hits. Haruo PS re: 'Tis the Gift — don't forget its use as an advertising tune for the Oldsmobile Millennia (sp?) a couple years ago. I don't recall a jingle, just the tune. |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Jan 05 - 07:12 PM G'day again WYSIWYG, Hmmm ... the grey cells are getting a little patchy! This is a description of my Rounder Records 0078 (LP 1976 … now on CD) Early Shaker Spirituals Sung by Sister R. Mildred Baker With Sisters Ethel Peacock, Elsie McCool, Della Hakell, Marie Burgess, Frances Carr, and other members of The United Society of Shakers Sabbathday Lake, Maine With notes by Daniel W. Patterson SIDE A The rolling deep I hunger and thirst Come life, Shaker life On Zion's holy ground Little children Down in the lowly vale I'll spend and be spent The gospel is advancing 'Tis the gift to be simple Low, low in this pretty path I will walk with my children Bow down, O Zion Low down in the valley I love Mother, I love her way Who will bow and bend like the willow I looked and lo a lamb On learning songs Let me have Mother's gospel With a new tongue On Sister Paulina Springer SIDE B I never did believe O holy Father Yielding and simple We must be meek O brighter than the morning star Farewell, earthly joy Down to the deep and rolling river My home, my sweet home in Zion O the gospel of Mother I bless the day This gospel how precious I feel the need of a deeper baptism Gospel kindred, how I love you Love is little Love, more love How lovely are the faithful souls Where is the gem Blessed, thrice blessed O give me a little love We will all go home with you Rounder Records LP 0078 seems to be a 1976 re-edit of recordings from 1963, 1966, 1970 and 1976 … based on two earlier albums of "Early Shaker Spirituals. Most web 'hits' list the recording as having 40 hymns … but I remember a couple of the 40 tracks being discussion - those track names startin "On ...". Regards, Bob |
Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Burke Date: 13 Jan 05 - 06:46 PM In answer to the question of children. Shakers were supposed to be celibate. Families with children did convert so there would have been children joining with their parents early on. They also did take orphans in. I suppose some of those 'orphans' could have been actual children of the community members. By late in the 19th century there we not many new conversions from outside the community. Many children raised by Shakers also did not join, so by the mid 20th cent. the numbers had dwindled considerably. A Shaker scholar who was here recently, metioned that during the 20th cent. adoption practices changed & states usually tried to place children with families of their mother's religious preference. The practice of placing children in the homes of unrelated families rather than orphanages was also a late 19th & early 20th century development that worked against children being placed with Shaker communities. |
Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Burke Date: 13 Jan 05 - 06:08 PM Amazon lists this: A Shaker Hymnal: A Facsimile Edition of the 1908 Hymnal of the Canterbury Shakers. Millennial Praises only has words, no music. Our library has many copies & one is still on my desk from when I was looking up Babylon is Fallen. I can check it for you. "Early Shaker spirituals" recordings of some of the remaining Shaker sisters made in the 1960's & 70's. It was reissued in 1996 by Rounder on CD 0078. This is essential and is probably the one Bob was thinking of. "Shaker Songs: Come to Zion," sung by Norumbega Harmony and Singers of Hancock Shaker Village, directed by Stephen Marini. 35 Shaker songs and anthems of all types dating from early hymnals to the 1908 hymnal. Because the Shakers forbade harmony until the late 19th century, all songs on the recording except for eight from later hymnals are sung in unison. Order direct from Norumbega Harmony. It is also available directly from Hancock Shaker Village. Mitzi Collins, owner of Sampler Records in Rochester, NY, has done a lot of research on Shaker Music. She has 2 recordings & a song book. Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: dick greenhaus Date: 13 Jan 05 - 02:40 PM Open Mike- No real connection between Shakers and Quakers--the Shakers' propensity for dance prompted the nickname "Shaking Quakers", hence Shakers. They were a celibate community with strict gender equality, making the hackneyed phrase "separate but equal" a meaningful one. They raised orphans and abandoned children (who could not join the sect until adulthood.) Their motto: Hands to work and hearts to God. Incidentally, Shakers developed evaporated milk, and introduced a lot of then-unheard-of ideas to the world: prepackaged seeds, the modern flat broom and a bunch of others I can't think of at the moment. |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Cats Date: 13 Jan 05 - 02:31 PM My friend and I have made an extensive search into many of the Shaker hynmals, magazines, private letters, hand written books etc that are, at present, in a cardboard box in the library of a museum in England. It is a private collection and not for general release. I have contacted the remaining Shakers in US and have their blessing to spend time going through them and eventually to get them into the public domain. We sing some of them out at sessions already and have an idea that, in the near future, want to put together a group of people who will sing them out - probably about 8 good harmony singers. We have also seen the dance patterns that go with them. Obviously, this is going to take a while as we both work and need to travel to get to the private collection, meanwhile... watch out at any festival we are at and if we are singing something you've never heard before, it's probably shaker. And, because I couldn't afford a genuine one shipped from the US, I have had a huge Shaker style refectory table and 8 chairs made to go in my new (very old) house. There is also an excellent book on Shaker influences on gardening too. |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: open mike Date: 13 Jan 05 - 02:22 PM what's the relationship between Shakers and Quakers? As mentioned in a post above--adoption... was there something about them NOT having children (or sex?) that was the cause of their culture diminishing? |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: dick greenhaus Date: 12 Jan 05 - 11:01 PM WISIWYG- The Andrews book is good. The must collection, though, is "The Shaker Spiritual" by Daniel W. Patterson (Princeton University Press._A massive 550 pages with descriptions, words, music and satisfying notes and bibliography. IMO a rrewarding study. The Shakers were a facinating mix of theological extremism and down-to-earth practicality. |

Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: frogprince Date: 12 Jan 05 - 09:51 PM Rapaire, I had always heard that the shakers adopted orphans regularly; do you have indication that some of them did have their own "blood children"? Not meaning to argue about anything, just wondering if my own take on their beliefs and customs has been inaccurate. |
Subject: RE: Your Shaker Collection From: Rapparee Date: 12 Jan 05 - 09:37 PM Oh, fer gooness sakes! I have several books on or by the Shakers, including one which is a guide to conduct for Shaker children (yes, there were some). There's a wonderful place in Kentucky, Heaven(?) Hill, which is an old Shaker village and I can't recommend a trip there highly enough. My wife has some books which deal with Shaker quilts, but I can't find them right now and she's off at a...quilt meeting. I have some books on Shaker woodworking and the Shaker beliefs, too. |
