"I Will Go On My Way" not in Patterson, "The Shaker Spiritual", but probably in Andrews, "The Gift to Be Simple," book also reprinted by Dover; unfortunately I don't have it.

I see that the Boston Camerata's CD Simple Gifts has already been cited. I just dropped into this thread to say that it is the reason I finally broke down and bought a CD player. I had heard parts of it on Boston's public radio station and a program about it on Boston's public TV channel. I had to have that music, and it was the first music I wanted that was not available on cassette!

Chris in Nashville : Have a look at the beautiful "Bright morning star's arising", which is in the DT here and is attributed to the shaker tradition.

OK, so I'm arriving six months late to this discussion, but I'm in a group in Nashville called Kindling Stone. Over the past couple of years, we've been starting to explore the wonderful (and prolific) Shaker music tradition. It's estimated that collectively, the Shakers wrote 10,000(!) songs and tunes or more, with only a fraction in publication or on recordings. In our process, we've had some contact with the brilliant scholar Dan Patterson who wrote The Shaker Spiritual, mentioned in this thread as an essential book for those interested in Shaker music and culture. I would add to this Early Shaker Spirituals and the Boston Camerata's recording Simple Gifts as good listening. William Coulter from the west coast has made some nice instrumental recordings of Shaker songs. Our group has had the pleasure of performing this summer and last in the Meeting House at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine, the only active Shaker community in the country. If you're ever in Maine, it's an amazing place to visit. Kindling Stone's debut recording has recently been released, and may be of interest to folks here. In addition to our own songs, it features selections from the Shaker and The Sacred Harp traditions. It's available at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/kindlingstone

If anyone else has tables of contents or songbook indexes to post, please do-- I am going to make an index combining them all so that if one wants to look up a song by title, one can easily find the printed source(s).

Subject: INDEX: Shaker Hymnal (1908)
From: masato sakurai
Date: 26 Feb 05 - 07:21 PM

A Shaker Hymnal (A Facsimile Edition of the 1908 Hymnal of the Canterbuty Shakers) (Woodstock, New York: The Overlook Press, 1990):

      INDEX
(Anthems indicated by *)

All else will fail
All the way shineth brighter
Angels call me
*Arise, shine, for thy light is come
As new every morning
As opes the lily fair
As the dawn of the morning
As we gather round the altar
Baptize with the power
Bear ye one another's burdens
Be fixed, my heart, on higher aims
*Behold, I stand at the door
*Behold the tabernacle of God
Be lifted up, my soul
Beyond all earthly sorrow
Blessed are the pure
Bless us through all cares
Blest be that universal love
*Break forth into singing
Break forth, O my soul
Breathe on our souls
Bright elysian field
Bright Spirit World
Call the needy children home
Deeper than unfathomed waters
Down in the valley
Ever changing, ever aiming
*Exalt the Lord
Fairer than rubies
Far out upon life's ocean
Father, list; our souls are pleading
Fellow traveler, why repining
For more than loaves
Give me to drink
God be praised
God, our Father and our Mother
God's love is at the helm
Go work in My vineyard to-day
Harvesters, the grain is ripening
Has the cup of cold water been given
Have ye asked in Christ's name
Have ye found a more excellent way
*Hear my prayer
Hear us, O righteous God
Here I've no continuing city
Here's my heart
How can I for a moment
How exalted and how beautiful
I am carried beyond the vain pleasures
I am laying up my treasure
I am sure of my passport
I call My own and they listen
I come to be fed at Thy table
I draw no blank
"If ye love Me," comes the message
*If ye love Me, keep My commandments
I have builded thy temple
I have launched upon life's ocean
I have led you, My beloved
I have set my heart to journey
I know that I ask not in vain
I'll brave the storm
I may not ask where Thou wouldst lead
I may not reach the height
Inasmuch as ye have done it
I never would weary in watching
In the day when I shall comfort thee
In the spiritual sky
In Thy wisdom, Father, guide me
Into the sacred, blest retreat
In whose service art thou toiling
In your prayers remember me
I plead my cause
I remember쳌CI remember
I see the light before me
I seek a heavenly treasure
I shall know My own
I shall meet the brave souls
Israel, thou art not forsaken
Is there a faint heart that hungers
It comes to me in still hours
I've sought thee, I've found thee
I walk above thy sins
I walk through the valley
I will daily care for thee
I will gather unto Me
I will go on my way
I wi11 lead you
*I will lift up mine eyes
I will open the windows of heaven
*I will praise Thee
I will rise and go to my Father's house
I will stand as the oak
I would rather win a pure white spirit
Joy and peace are my sunshine
Just enough cross by the way
Just where the burdens are heavy
Lead me, lead me, angels
Leave awhile the things that perish
*Let all those that put their trust
Let me bear the cup of blessing
Let me be there with the holy
Let me dwell in blissful mansions
Let no one be disheartened
Let our hymn of true thanksgiving
*Let the God of my salvation
Let Zion move as the heart of one
Lift thine eyes, O Christian pilgrim
Light of Lights, beam on my way
Lion-hearted, brave and true
Listen, O my Saviour
Live, my soul, as peace shall follow
Look a little higher up
Lo! ye are the light of the world
Make the Lord thy God
May Thy kingdom come
My disciples, forbear ye
My heart to Thy work is committed
My kingdom's not divided
My little barque is frail at best
My soul hears the echo
My voice shall sing
No one can sing the psalm for me
No other God will I adore
Not below the clouds be building
Not enough to sing God's praise
No time like to-day
Not one sparrow is forgotten
O build as the wise build
O builder, wouldst thou raise a house
O brighter than the morning star
O climb a steeper height
O Father, to Thy throne
O Father, with the signet
O give me language wholly pure
*O give thanks
*O God of mercy
O let us not hunger nor thirst
O lift the standard higher up
O list, our Father, to our prayer
O long have I sought Thee
O Lord, in Thee I place my trust
On the work of our hands
Open to my vision clearly
O sacred hour of worship
O shall I forgive
O sing in the moming
O sing, my soul, in accents clear
*O sing to the Lord
O sing with joy
O Source of light, of truth, and love
O tarry not 'mid worldly strife
O the blessedness of love that is pure
O the blessings rich and many
O the love of God how precious
O there'll be a song of triumph
Our Father, we ask Thee
Our God who marks the sparrow's fall
O Virgin Church
O what is the mission
O where should I look for the blessing
O write my name in heaven
O Zion, be law-abiding
O Zion, sing praise 'mid thy sorrow
O Zion, thy growth is my care
Pass me not by
Patient and faithful
Peace divine, increasing measure
*Peace I leave with you
*Praise ye the Lord
Press on, on triumphantly
Redemption's song, for thee I long
Rejoice in the strength
Seems the reaper yet to linger
Send not Christ's needy ones away
Shall earth respond with harvest full
Shall mountains fall
Shun the thorn and grow the flower
Sing, sing, my soul, of that immortal treasure
*Sing unto God
So much need have I to thank Thee
Sweet angels, come nearer
Sweet Summer Land
The blind shall see
*The earth is the Lord's
*The Lord is gracious and righteous
*The Lord reigneth
There are notes of joy and beauty
There are roses on my cross
There comes down the ages
There has come unto thee
There is always a care over thee
*There is a treasure
There's a bright sphere of truth
There's a light that shines
There's a peace that surpasseth understanding
There's land beyond
There's wealth in mines of gold
The seed-time is past
The Spirit is calling
The sun and stars may roll their way
The sun fails not
The vine groweth
The work that brings the blessing
Though frail the barque
Thou shalt love the Lord
Thou Uplifting Spirit
Thy goodness hath covered the land
Thy goodness hath followed my life
Time may be long
To the Kingdom we're advancing
To him that overcometh
Turn the feet of those who wander
*Unto Thee, 0 Lord
Wait upon my time
Watching and praying I find you
We are out on the ocean broad
We'll meet you in the land of souls
What does the Spirit whisper
What is life and what its meaning
What saith the Spirit
What shall it avail
What will bring the heavens nearer
What will the passage thro' Jordan be
When I seek divine acceptance
When God, as our Father, shall call
When the angel troubles the waters
When the lilies fade away
When the rains descend
When storms have passed
Wheresoe'er the Spirit calleth
While here we are building each day
While God inspires my heart
While sowing by the wayside
Who lives for God
Who maketh the desert to smile
Who shall reach the heights of glory
Why fear Me when the feet may stray
Within the Vale Humility
With the hundred four and forty thousand
Worldly interests, earthly gain
Wouldst thou crown thy life with glory
Ye cannot serve God to acceptance
Ye heavens, realms of holy light
Ye shall reach the holy city

My copy of the Patterson classic arrived yesterday, about $10 used (not really used). I also got my copy of the Gourd Music book linked above-- I can highly recommend them both. The dulci tab in the Gourd book is great-- Booster Terrik came over and was able to play two of them right off. And I am already working on two Patterson pieces not on the Verdant Groves CD.

Q wrote «Don't forget the Indian Shaker Church. "John Slocum and the Indian Shaker Church," R. H. Ruby et al., 1996, Univ. Oklahoma Press» with a link which did not clarify that the Indian Shaker Church is not related except generically (they're both relgious sects) and in name (they're both called "Shakers") to the Mother Ann folks of the Eastern states.

The Indian Shaker Church is very much a going concern (not celibate) in the Northwest; I have attended academic conferences where (Indian) Shaker dance took the place of Mr. Bush's inaugural invocation. I also knew a guy who was a lay preacher in a Methodist church (at Nooksack; he was raised Roman Catholic on the Crow Res) and his wife was an Indian Shaker clergywoman.

Not sure if the Indian Shakers have any sect-specific musical hits.

Haruo

PS re: 'Tis the Gift — don't forget its use as an advertising tune for the Oldsmobile Millennia (sp?) a couple years ago. I don't recall a jingle, just the tune.

I learned via email with Debra Spencer that most of the material on the VERDANT GROVES album came from the Patterson book, and I have ordered it. Can't wait to see what, if any, adaptations they made in interpreting the songs.

what's the relationship between Shakers and Quakers?
As mentioned in a post above--adoption...
was there something about them NOT having
children (or sex?) that was the cause of
their culture diminishing? someone asks...

none really, other than we are both Utopian faiths.

G'day again WYSIWYG,

Hmmm ... the grey cells are getting a little patchy! This is a description of my LP (now, I see, re-issued on CD):

Rounder Records 0078 (LP 1976 … now on CD)
Early Shaker Spirituals
Sung by
Sister R. Mildred Baker
With
Sisters Ethel Peacock, Elsie McCool, Della Hakell, Marie Burgess, Frances Carr, and other members of
The United Society of Shakers
Sabbathday Lake, Maine
With notes by Daniel W. Patterson

SIDE A
The rolling deep
I hunger and thirst
Come life, Shaker life
On Zion's holy ground
Little children
Down in the lowly vale
I'll spend and be spent
The gospel is advancing
'Tis the gift to be simple
Low, low in this pretty path
I will walk with my children
Bow down, O Zion
Low down in the valley
I love Mother, I love her way
Who will bow and bend like the willow
I looked and lo a lamb
On learning songs
Let me have Mother's gospel
With a new tongue
On Sister Paulina Springer

SIDE B
I never did believe
O holy Father
Yielding and simple
We must be meek
O brighter than the morning star
Farewell, earthly joy
Down to the deep and rolling river
My home, my sweet home in Zion
O the gospel of Mother
I bless the day
This gospel how precious
I feel the need of a deeper baptism
Gospel kindred, how I love you
Love is little
Love, more love
How lovely are the faithful souls
Where is the gem
Blessed, thrice blessed
O give me a little love
We will all go home with you

Rounder Records LP 0078 seems to be a 1976 re-edit of recordings from 1963, 1966, 1970 and 1976 … based on two earlier albums of "Early Shaker Spirituals.

Most web 'hits' list the recording as having 40 hymns … but I remember a couple of the 40 tracks being discussion - those track names startin "On ...".

Regards,

Bob

In answer to the question of children. Shakers were supposed to be celibate. Families with children did convert so there would have been children joining with their parents early on. They also did take orphans in. I suppose some of those 'orphans' could have been actual children of the community members.

By late in the 19th century there we not many new conversions from outside the community. Many children raised by Shakers also did not join, so by the mid 20th cent. the numbers had dwindled considerably. A Shaker scholar who was here recently, metioned that during the 20th cent. adoption practices changed & states usually tried to place children with families of their mother's religious preference. The practice of placing children in the homes of unrelated families rather than orphanages was also a late 19th & early 20th century development that worked against children being placed with Shaker communities.

Amazon lists this: A Shaker Hymnal: A Facsimile Edition of the 1908 Hymnal of the Canterbury Shakers.

Millennial Praises only has words, no music. Our library has many copies & one is still on my desk from when I was looking up Babylon is Fallen. I can check it for you.

"Early Shaker spirituals" recordings of some of the remaining Shaker sisters made in the 1960's & 70's. It was reissued in 1996 by Rounder on CD 0078. This is essential and is probably the one Bob was thinking of.

"Shaker Songs: Come to Zion," sung by Norumbega Harmony and Singers of Hancock Shaker Village, directed by Stephen Marini. 35 Shaker songs and anthems of all types dating from early hymnals to the 1908 hymnal. Because the Shakers forbade harmony until the late 19th century, all songs on the recording except for eight from later hymnals are sung in unison. Order direct from Norumbega Harmony. It is also available directly from Hancock Shaker Village.

Mitzi Collins, owner of Sampler Records in Rochester, NY, has done a lot of research on Shaker Music. She has 2 recordings & a song book.
Love is Little: A Sampling of Shaker Spirituals M. Collins, R Hall, J Harp, K Johnson, C Liggett, A Nagel-S9222. Songbook has same title.
Joy of Angels - (Christmas Music) Randy Folger, Colleen Liggett, Kathy Leigh Johnson, Mitzie Collins, The Sampler Chorus - S9528

William Coulter & Barry Phillips (& friends) have done 3 lovely instrumental recordings of Shaker Music for Gourd Music. If you don't get the box set & I'm remembering correctly, Shelley Phillips recommended Music on the Mountain to me as her favorite.

Open Mike-
No real connection between Shakers and Quakers--the Shakers' propensity for dance prompted the nickname "Shaking Quakers", hence Shakers.

They were a celibate community with strict gender equality, making the hackneyed phrase "separate but equal" a meaningful one. They raised orphans and abandoned children (who could not join the sect until adulthood.) Their motto: Hands to work and hearts to God.

Incidentally, Shakers developed evaporated milk, and introduced a lot of then-unheard-of ideas to the world: prepackaged seeds, the modern flat broom and a bunch of others I can't think of at the moment.

My friend and I have made an extensive search into many of the Shaker hynmals, magazines, private letters, hand written books etc that are, at present, in a cardboard box in the library of a museum in England. It is a private collection and not for general release.   I have contacted the remaining Shakers in US and have their blessing to spend time going through them and eventually to get them into the public domain. We sing some of them out at sessions already and have an idea that, in the near future, want to put together a group of people who will sing them out - probably about 8 good harmony singers. We have also seen the dance patterns that go with them. Obviously, this is going to take a while as we both work and need to travel to get to the private collection, meanwhile... watch out at any festival we are at and if we are singing something you've never heard before, it's probably shaker. And, because I couldn't afford a genuine one shipped from the US, I have had a huge Shaker style refectory table and 8 chairs made to go in my new (very old) house. There is also an excellent book on Shaker influences on gardening too.

WISIWYG-
The Andrews book is good.
The must collection, though, is "The Shaker Spiritual" by Daniel W. Patterson (Princeton University Press._A massive 550 pages with descriptions, words, music and satisfying notes and bibliography.

IMO a rrewarding study. The Shakers were a facinating mix of theological extremism and down-to-earth practicality.

A good Dover reprint:
"The Gift to be Simple," Edward Deming Andrews, $4.75. Eighty songs in notation.

A little information in threads 5527, 21813, 7307.

The Shaker Journal Shaker
A good introduction, and defines the difference between Shaker hymns and songs. Also a brief list of sources, discs, etc. (I would copy before it is taken off- looks like most of the site gone already.

Some anthems by Hampton here: Golden Plates

An excellent cd: "Simple Gifts," the Boston Camerata, Erato 4509-98491-2. List and notes here: Simple Gifts cd

Just a few. There is an online site with a few songs and good discussion that I will have to look up.

I have several books on or by the Shakers, including one which is a guide to conduct for Shaker children (yes, there were some). There's a wonderful place in Kentucky, Heaven(?) Hill, which is an old Shaker village and I can't recommend a trip there highly enough. My wife has some books which deal with Shaker quilts, but I can't find them right now and she's off at a...quilt meeting. I have some books on Shaker woodworking and the Shaker beliefs, too.
