I used to listen to my Grandmother Lillian sing and whistle this song when I was four years old (1949). It was one of her favorites. My mother sang it also. I only remember a few of the words and the tune to the chorus. I can't seem to be able to get a recording of it to hear the melody. Can you do this on the computer? I am Computer illiterate. I need: "See the box that says..." instructions, and "Then you click on here"...etc.

I feel so blessed to have found the words to this song. My daddy sang or hummed this song many times in my presence and I've always thought of it as his favorite song. I am seventy years old and daddy has been gone for 35 years, but I can still hear it...some of the words are a little different than I remembered. Thanks so much.

In 1947, my family in AR gathered around Mother's Day. All of my Grandmother's 8 children were there and many pictures exist today of that gathering. One memory I have of that time is some of the cousins playing on Grandma's wind up music machine, which played cylinder recordings. The one thing I remembered was the words "my sweet snow deer". The tune is on this page.

I am a WWII vet. Lived in English Indiana for my young life. I used to play this song for many years. But I lost the lyrics and have been looking for this song for years. I'm 83 years young. Still play a lot of jazz guitar. I really, really, really appreciate this song. It's the same as I used to play it with a trio of guitar, bass, and piano. We loved this song dearly. SNOW DEER. American, Canadian; Two-Step or Polka (2/4 time). USA; Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. G Major (Johnson, Phillips): D Major. Standard. AB (Johnson): AA'BB' (Phillips). In the repertory of Arizona fiddler Kenner C. Kartchner, who said it was a "pioneer song of long ago." In actuality it was a Tin-Pan-Alley song by Percy Wenrich who composed it around the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, during the craze for ethnic American Indian songs. Johnson (1986) says it is a popular tune with Michigan fiddlers, and indeed from its tin-pan-alley beginnings it entered traditional North American fiddle repertoire. Most older Pennsylvania fiddlers know and play the tune, according to Robert Buckingham, "always in harmony if there are two or more fiddlers." It was in the repertoire of Sandhills/Cape Fear, North Carolina, regional fiddler Lauchlin Shaw, though it was uncharacteristic of most of his repertoire of reels and waltzes. The words posted by Ebbie do seem to fit the tune given in The Fiddler's Companion.

P.S. I was glad to get the lyrics, but they seem kindof uninspired, and don't fit the tune so well in some places. I think I'll just keep playing it as a tune. dew

Elva and Les, Any chance you could email me , I would like to get more info on this song for my Pop who is the one who wanted this in the first place, he remembers the song when he was a young man(near 70 now ) and since he is Mohawk we figure that his version might be different considering the implications in the song, I'd appreciate if you could get in touch with me.

Good words ! There was an earlier thread on this some time ago. Put "snowdeer" in the thread box and set the days to 365 and, hopefully, it will magically appear. May have slight variation on the supplied lyrics above. Its one of my favorite melodies.

Looking for lyrics and or lead sheet for old song "Snowdeer", probably around the 1920's maybe earlier.

Song starts "white man come, bullets hum..."
