Subject: Lyr Req: Cabages Ka-beans and Karots
From: GUEST,sspackma@yahoo.com
Date: 16 Jan 05 - 08:29 PM

Hello all,
Here is a song I've known since it was sung to me as a child, but I'm wondering if there is any more to the song. Also, I haven't been able to find anything on this song either on this web-site or via Google... I can't be the only one to remember this one, can I?

Here are the lyrics I know (it may be a chorus?)

Ca-bages ka-beans and Ca-rots,
Ca-rots, ka-beans and ca-bages
prettiest of flowers I love you so
I love to sit and watch you grow.
Some people like rhodadrendons,
and some forget-me-nots.
But the things I like best are
Ca-bages ka-beans and Ca-rots.

It sounds like a music-hall song.

A radio show called The Antique Phonograph Hour has CA BAGES, CA BEANS, CAR ROTS in its playlist. It says it was recorded by Florrie Ford in 1919 on the Zonophone label.

Andante.com claims to have a sound file of CAB-BAGES, CA-BEANS AND CAR-ROTS by Wynn Stanley and Andrew Allen, but you have to be a logged-in member to play it.

The title is usually given as CABBAGES, CABEANS AND CARROTS. Under this title, it was recorded on a mostly classical CD called "My Garden," which is, alas, out of print.

Amazon.com has a sound sample, however, from which I transcribed:

You've had lots of songs about roses,
And songs about violets blue.
You've had lots of songs about chree-santhemums,
And songs about daffodils, too.
But I've got a flower song that you shouldn't miss.
They're my favorite flow'rs and the chorus is this:

Cab-bages*, ca-beans* and car-rots*,
Car-rots, and ca-beans and cab-bages,
Sweet as the flowers that I love so.
I love to sit there and watch them grow.
Some people like rhododendrums**,
And some forget-me-nots,
But I....

[*On each of these words, the emphasis falls on the second syllable, e.g. "ka-BODGE-es."
**At least I think that's how she pronounced it.]

Michael Kilggarrif's monumental index (always the first place toloook for anything you think may have a music hall origin) gives Wynn Stanley and Andre Allen as the authors; published by Lawrence Wright 1919; original singer George Bass. Florrie Forde recorded the song in May 1919. If you can't locate a copy try the British Library who will usually provide a photocopy of out-of-copyright items (for money,of course) if you give them all the details.

And if you thought the spelling of Michael Kilgarriff's name looked wrong, it was.

And Andre could do with a final W.

Wow!!

You all rock! THank you. My only remaining question would be, what is Music Hall? And if something is Music Hall, how do you know it's Music Hall? (Don't suppose there is any relation to 'Dance Hall' there, is there?)

Thanks!!

"Music Hall" is the British equivalent of "vaudeville" in the US. My impression is that Music Hall leaned a little more toward the comical while vaudeville leaned a little toward the "cute" and sentimental, but of course, I could be completely wrong!

I remember this song being sung on the radio ~ not sure by whom, but v possibly on a Henry Hall's Band programme ~ in my early childhood, about 1935 when I was 3, and I found it v funny then [and still do]. IIRC, "Cabbages" was pronounced nearer to "ca-barges" then the "ca-bodges" suggested above; and "carrots" to rhyme precisely with "garottes".

It's unfortunate that Carl Sandburg removed this song when paring down his The American Songbag. In the introduction to the 1990 reprint, Garrison Keillor gives the last four lines of the chorus:

"Some people like rhododendrons
And some forget-me-nots
But what I like best is the dish of ka-beef
with cabaghes, cabeans, and carotts."

Seems the penultimate line is missing from the above.

Earlier this evening, I was watching "The One Show" on BBC1. One of the guests being interviewed was comedian Lee Mack. His grandfather? was also a stage comic, and the show had found a playbill for one of his performances. It mentioned this song.
For curiousity, I googled the title. First result at top of search list (and only one obviously mentioning the song) - This Thread.
Typical!
Quack!

I too watched the one show tonight, and remembered I'd seen the music somewhere.

I've found it..

Lyrics from my copy are...

Title Ca-Bages, Ca-Beans and Car-rots

Verse 1

You've had lots of songs about roses,
And songs about violets blue.
You've had lots of songs about chrys-an-the-mums,
And songs about daf-fo-dils, too.
But I've got a flow'r song that you shouldn't miss.
They're my favorite flow'rs and the chorus is this:

Cab-ba-ges, Ca-beans and Car-rots,
Car-rots, and Ca-beans and Cab-ba-ges,
Sweet-est of flow'rs that I love so.
I love to sit there and watch them grow.
Some people like rho-do-den-drums**,
And some forget-me-nots,
But I.'d rather have a nice plate of Ca-beef
With Cab-ba-ges, Ca-beans and Car-rots.

Verse 2

The "Heat of a Rose" some may fancy,....

The heart of a rose some may fancy
But give me the heart of a pea
Stuffed with tomatters with artisan sprouts
And onions that sing you to sleep
The Roses of Picardy alders may sleep
But I'd rather pick up some nice stuff and receive

With Cab-ba-ges, Ca-beans and Car-rots,
Car-rots, and Ca-beans and Cab-ba-ges,
Sweetest of flowErs that I love so
