Hey!

It's about this time of year when we start to hear the possible lineup for the Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival. Not seen anything yet. I know there are a few of the organisers who frequent Mudcat. Can anyone give any info?

I see from the web site the dates are 17th, 18th & 19th June.

Yet again 2005 looks like being a very good year not only for headline acts but an expanding fringe. Also a lot more canal related activities and music this year.
So get your bookings in early
Don't forget if you want to come by boat you can do, the more the merrier.

From what Josher says this year looks as good as last. I came to Middlewich for the first time last year and have to say it is one of the best festivals on the circuit. I'll definately be back.

For those not in the know (Martin from Barton!), Middlewich is a delightful small town in Cheshire about 25 miles south of Manchester and the same distance north of Stoke-on-Trent. It's a doddle to find Jcn 18 of the M6 and turn left.

There are numerous sessions and singarounds both those organised by the festival and those that seem to spring up everywhere on an ad hoc basis.

Where is Barton by the way? Never heard of it!

Thanks very much chaps. Is there camping? There are many Bartons. The one I speak of is Barton Le Clay in Beds. Sandwiched between two delightful Towns, one goes by the name of Luton and the other Bedford. Have you heard of either?

Yes there's camping and a shuttle bus runs from the campsite to the main events field, this being a central point for the whole town, which is just taken over by the festival. Alternativley if you have a boat you can get to us by canal and moor up in the town for the weekend and really be part of the festival.
Luton?? Bedford?? are they down south

But by far the best way to get there is straight up the Trent and Mersey, through Harecastle, and down Heartbreak Hill.

We're aiming to get there by that method Paul, quite looking forward to Heartbreak Hill, we haven't done it for a few years. Quite a doddle really after the likes of Hatton!

We've never made Middlewich Festival, so are really looking forward to getting to a festival by water. The last one we nearly almost made by boat was Wheaton Aston, which we didn't realise existed, & we arrived on Sunday night as everyone was going home!

No you don't need to book. Just turn up, moor up and join in.Did I mention the Daystar Theatre and doing some shows on The Salinae Field. Just next to the Town Wharf, where there will also be canal related demos plus music and crafts , oh and stalls and lots lots more.

When I was a young youth I had many happy holidays down south (based in Welwyn Garden City, actually) and well remember spending hours watching the gliders on Dunstable Downs.

Of course, in those days, all this was fields....

Hi all
camping = £5 / night the site has showers and toilets and we will be running a shuttle bus at a small charge to take people to the festival venues. Yes you do need to book in advance.
Daystar are doing 4 performances two on Saturday and two on Sunday
yes the Horse boating demo will be back, definitly on Sunday and hopefully on Saturday as well.
Horseboating dem o for those who want to know involves tacking up the horse in preparation for pulling an unpowered narrowboat in this case its usually the tar boat Gifford, which is usually based at the Boat Museum. On the Monday after the festival the horse will be pulling Gifford along the Middlewich branch of the Shropshire Union canal to Nantwich.

A gypsy vardo for info is the name of the traditional wagon the travellers called home. we have been contacted by a Romany lady who still has a vardo and is will to come to the festival and show the vardo and also show some traditional crafts. All this with other craft and boat related events will be on the Salinae

Well, the 'Salinae' is actually the 'Salinae Centre' - a Cheshire County Council Day Care Centre and clinic in Lewin Street. It's named after the supposed Roman name for Middlewich, Salinae, or 'salt works'.
Some Roman historians dispute this and claim that Middlewich was actually 'Condate' - a name usually ascribed to Northwich and meaning 'meeting of the waters'.
I could go on, but life's too short...

Tiny Tin Lady? I saw them at Cropredy and I thought they were very good. They're amazingly young - one of them's like 13 or something.
Good songs though - all their own, I think and really good harmonies.

Fairport love them & Ralph McTell raves about them. I see they're at Poynton as well as Glastobury & others.

Another date for peoples' diaries, which might tie in with your plans. I've just be taken on to help organise aspects of the Stoke-on-trent Canals Festival. It's going to be on MaY 28/29, and is based at the Etruria Industrial Museum(at the junction of the Caldon with the Trent and Mesey). It is not specifically a folk(or music festival) but there will be plenty of musical fun to be had. I will start a thread on this later when I get a grip on what's going on, but it will be music and boat friendly(that's what they've pulled me in for).

I'll tell you what is wrong with "banjo's", GUEST:guest. There is no acceptable plural. Banjos, banjoes and banjo's all have their devotess, but nothing seems to really work. On the analogy with potatoes, I personally go for banjoes, but opinions differ. Musically, of course, there is nothing wrong with them: if there were, why would God have decreed that they are the instruments angels play in heaven?

As you may know this year the celebrated Salt Town Poets of Middlewich are celebrating ten years of existence (in various guises) and at this year's ff (means Folk Festival, y'know)there will, in addition to the usual Open Mike session on Saturday at the Boar's Head, be a special 'Poetry & Pints' do (very likely at the Golden Lion).
It will, I think, be of interest to some people to find out whence the STPs came and whither they are going. And I use the words advisedly.

I was at Poynton over last weekend.Did anyone else go? It was pretty good - Fairport & Pentangle were AWESOME. I saw Tiny Tin Lady too for the first time since Cropredy last year and what a difference a year's made to them - they're brilliant. Really good songs and harmonies.

I'm looking forward to seeing them as well as the divine Eddi @ middlewich.

This year the Salt Town Poets are celebrating ten years of existence with a couple of
special events at M-FAB 2005. Our ever-popular Festival Open Mike session this year is
on Friday evening at the Boar's Head and, as always, all and sundry are invited along
to sing, play, recite or just listen and enjoy a few pints. We will, incidentally, be an-
nouncing the second winner of the John Brunker Trophy during the evening.

On Sunday morning we'll be back at the Boar's Head with our old friend and col-
league Les Barker for an event which has become something of a tradition in recent
years – Breakfast With Barker.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, we'll be reviving an old event in a new (to us) location with
'Poetry & Pints' at the Golden Lion in Chester Road. We'll be welcoming old and new friends to help us
celebrate our first ten years, including very special guest Guto Dafis of Toreth. See the

Well-known Middlewich Historian Alan Earl will be joining us at the Golden Lion on the 19th
June to perform some of the poetry of C.F. Lawrence, who was clerk to the Middlewich UDC

i still don't understand your concerns about boats and who owns them, as I have said before many boat owners write their names on the side of their boats in very large letters for all the world to see. Also there are a myriad ways that you can find out who owns what boat. Please be more specific with your concerns.
I have tavelled the canals in one way or another for over twenty years and have never had a problem with people knowing that I own a boat and that she is called JENAND.
hopefully I shall be meeting you and AggieD at the Festival and you can see what nice people boaters are.

The concern is not about boats, or the people who own them. It's a matter of personal security.

I don't post under my real name--Max knows who I am, so if there's a problem with something I post, he can let me know. A lot of other mudcats know my real name, and know me personally--I count them all as good friends. And Reynaud and I looking forward to meeting a mess of new mudcats at Middlewich.

However, at the risk of seeming to be paranoid, and/or of boring those who either share these thoughts or who have read them here before, here is the issue. Many many people read the postings here. Some register, some post as "guest" and many more people read what is here than register, post or reply. A few of those people may not have the best of intentions toward those who do post, and might welcome the opportunity to know where and when to find them. My concern is akin to the general advisory not to post your email address, telephone number, or directions to your house on the forum.

I hope that clarifies the issue without offending anyone...

Like Josher, I do not post under my real name as I appreciate the "risk" of bad mudcatters - I also would never post my email, address or phone no's. Josher knows who I am ( and vice versa ) and we look out for each other. In relation to posting my boat name - perhaps not such a good idea, however if mudcatters visiting the festival would like to meet up, I don't see how else you can introduce yourselves to them ( yes I know about pm'ing - but that surely poses the same risk ). Anyway enough said, if I have taken a risk, it is my responsibility.
Back to the festival....we now have the following canalside crafts confirmed - fender makers, rag rug makers, spider knot belts, salt carrying demo, Daystar theatre, Horseboat demo, roses and castles demo, gypsy vardo, bodging etc. All is falling into place...

Joey raises a good point, about how mudcats might meet up...

Locally, a number of us "check in" with Sandy and Caroline, who have their Folk-Legacy booth set up at most of the festivals. We tend to wear mudcat pins and/or t-shirts. We hang out with mudcats we know already, who know other mudcats, who in turn know other mudcats, ad harmonium. FSGW's Getaway has so many mudcats in attendance that it has had a mudcat jam session, an idea that might have some appeal as a "fringe" event.

I have little doubt that Reynaud and I will be able to meet mudcats in Middlewich! We'll be looking for 'em!

I can see both Vixen's & Josher's points re letting people know the name of your boat, but from Josher's point of view, most people on the cut are very friendly, & look out for each other. In my experience there tends to be very little trouble from boaters, despite those boating sites who go on all the time about 'bandits', who in my experience are the same louts who will make problems on land or water. They will just as likely steal cars as throw stones at boaters. Yes we do from time to time have problems with yobs letting boats off moorings or boats being broken into, but these incidents are relatively few & far between.

Also many of the trolls who post or lurk on discussion groups are sad gits who don't have a life & can't face up to the reality of life, so are far more unlikely to turn up & face up to anyone.

Although I've been posting on Mudcat for a while, I don't actually know anyone, except 1 or 2 people locally that I know through the folk/morris scene, so am at the disadvantage that I would turn up & know no-one unless they came & found me.

Actually, I believe the likelihood of anything truly malicious is very very slim, but it's better, in my risk-averse book, to be cautious. A more likely event, I suspect, is the sudden arrival of a bunch of rowdy and hitherto unknown musicians on your deck at an inconvenient moment, who just happened to spot your boat and decided on the spur of the moment to drop in for a drop or two and a jam...harmless, but potentially unnerving.

Anyway, enough about posting boat names--I never meant for it to get so involved. People should do what they're comfortable with.

I'm hoping my festival guide comes in the mail soon, and I'm waiting to hear about buying concert tickets from the US...Reynaud and I are counting the days! We go to festivals here, but Middlewich seems a lot more interesting than anything we've been to, what with the "fringe" and the boat gathering. We really have no idea what to expect except that we're pretty sure there will be WAY TOO MUCH to see and do and hear.

John Brunker was one of my school teachers at a small Cheshire country school in the late 50s/early 60s. He was a master storyteller and could keep us spellbound for hours with old Welsh folk tales such as the Story Of Gelert's Grave.
He instilled in me a love of words and of stories and I thought that it was fitting that the Salt Town Poets should pay tribute to him in this way. After all, without John and thousands like him in the teaching profession, our lives would be the poorer.

Everything falling into place now, our boat has been moved to near Fradley & we look forward to having a good cruise 'the long way round' via the Staffs & Worcs, then onto my favourite canal, the Shroppie.

Can anyone inform me where the main site will be & is there an info/ticket office to get a full programme?

Hi Angela, You can get a programme from the main box office and also from other venues around the town ( I think Kings Lock Chandlery are having some ). Main box office will be located on Market Field on Civic Way.

Vixen, and Guest of 1st June: There are loads of workshops including Northwest Fiddle Tunes (Boat Band), Talk, Write & Sing (Jez Lowe),Singing (Witches Of Elswick), PA for Beginners (Sean Taylor).
Details are in the Event Guide.
As for food, I don't know the details for this year, but there are always good food stalls at the festival, including vegetarian options.
Perhaps someone from M-FAB can post details?

As far as I know, there are varying food stalls that vary in cost and type of food from your everyday burger van type to paninis, jacket potatoes etc . Will update further as soon as I know more.

Well hello everybody. Thought I'd check back on the thread I'd started all those years ago! Well, it is looking good isn't it - lots of bands, lots of boats & lots of people. I'm off now to pack my haversack with posh food (not egg and chips), pick up my friend Mrs Trellis, and head up the road to Middlewich. Oh yes. Need to get there early to be at the Boar's Head tonight for Middlewich Open Mic with the lengendary Salty Toon Posties and their friend Andrea Roseco.

The Boat Band's Saturday morning NW Tune workshop is cancelled(we wont be back from Joe Scurfield's funeral), and will now happen at 11.30AM Sunday, in the marquee in the garden of the cheshire Cheese
