Subject: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jan 05 - 01:48 PM Some people see fun in posting the 100th message in a thread. I'm that kind of person, too. I humbly admit that I manipulated things so I could post the Millionth Message, although I will also humbly admit that I think I was pretty clever in the way I did it, by refreshing all the threads that had the word "million" in the title. I think this sort of conduct must be a psychological disorder. I think it's related to being a "list checker," living a life of dubious accomplishments. I have logs of all the lighthouses I've visited, and hope to visit all on each coast and all the lakes in the U.S. - and then to start on Europe. I have visited 45 states in the U.S., and am making plans to hit those last five. In Arkansas and Louisiana, I only got to an airport, and stayed in the plane - does that count? So, what I'm saying to those of you who seek that magic number 100 in a thread is this: I feel your pain. However, if you seek to hit number 100 in a PermaThread, that's really dumb. Our PermaThreads are edited threads used to collect information. Unce the information is put to use, we delete the message - so the number of messages in the thread goes up and down, and may reach that number 100 many times. So, hitting 100 on a PermaThread is an ephemeral accomplishment. I see the same person claimed kudos for himself for hitting 100 in the DT Attribution thread - twice in the same thread. Then some poor JoeClone had to go to the trouble of deleting his self-congratulatory messages - which I suppose enables him to reach this dubious moving target once again. So, anyhow, I agree that it's fun to hit 100 - but please don't do it in PermaThreads. It's a hassle for us, and it makes you look dumb. -Joe Offer- (and it may be that my real reason for posting this is that I can boast again about hitting 1,000,000) |

Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: GUEST,MMario Date: 18 Jan 05 - 01:56 PM Joe - technically you should de-plane to count the state. Otherwise the plane counts as the state of origin until you de-plane at the destination. On the other hand - it's your compulsion - so you get to set the rules. |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Georgiansilver Date: 18 Jan 05 - 02:02 PM I prefer the 69 to the 100...it seems to have more meaning to me...but I don't really sweat on it! Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: GUEST,¥ÐŽ¤Þߌ€ Date: 18 Jan 05 - 02:32 PM The 100th message is of consequence to you humans only because you happen to have ten digits on your upper extremities. So, ten squared (100), ten cubed (1000) etc. are numbers held in high esteem by your species. Now, if you lived on the planet ÇŸ€§Œ like I do, where we are continually shedding and growing new appendages daily and where it's quite possible no two ÇŸ€§Œians in your neighborhood have the same number of digits at the same time, your 100 or 1000 would be totally meaningless. So, take the cosmic perspective. Get over it! |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jan 05 - 02:51 PM De-Plane!!! De-Plane!!!I don't care, MMario. I'll count Arkansas and Louisiana for now...but I'll go there in person some day, just to ensure my list is legit. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 18 Jan 05 - 03:00 PM Actually, Joe, Arkansas and Louisiana are two of the five states in the union where simply sitting in a plane on a runway does count as having visited them, there being no good reason to get off the plane. The other three are Alabama, Mississippi and New Jersey. |

They were posted anonymously (so what was the point, really?). Then I posted a one-liner chastisement. It was only after I did that that I realized "Way to go, dummy! You've just added to the problem!" Sorry. |

From: Bill D Date: 18 Jan 05 - 05:10 PM ...and here I've been gritting my teeth for a couple of years, trying NOT to remark how totally silly and inane that '100th post' bit was...and I find 'ol Joe even approves of it! 1,000,000 was a milestone...100 is just an interruption in a thread. *sigh*.... |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Bert Date: 18 Jan 05 - 05:35 PM Ah Bill, perhaps you don't have that memory of Joe standing on one leg with his arms outstreched and that crazy hat on his head, entertaining kids around the campfire. We must be glad that he retains that sense of frivolity. |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Bill D Date: 18 Jan 05 - 05:45 PM oh, I DO appreciate frivolity..*grin*...but I can't see for the life of me who is 'entertained' by "post 100"...I guess I have allowed my sense of humor to advance too much, hmmmm? |

Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Jeri Date: 18 Jan 05 - 06:28 PM I DO think the counting stuff is stupid. If you're going to post the 100th message, counting up from 97 is cheating because it's forcing things. Ideally, you should have something to say besides posting a number. Something intelligent like "Me too!" or "No, I don't agree with that." I know that some folks are straining just to type in the little numbers, though. I think PermaThreads and music threads should be off limits. It's probably not a good idea to post numbers below the line to things like obituary threads, though. In any case, this 100th post game is really stupid and pointless and annoying to others. 100 is for wimps. If you're going to do it, try to be lke me, and get the 5,000th post in a thread...MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jan 05 - 03:08 AM Bee-dubya - Alabama, Mississippi and New Jersey all have some beautiful spots. The Jersey shore, Princeton, the Delaware Bare and Delaware River areas of New Jersey are all wonderful places - and Cape May is extraordinary. Great lighthouses, too. Montgomery can be depressing, but I liked Birmingham - and I got the best barbecue I've ever had in a little town about fifteen miles south of Montgomery. Rural Mississippi has some beautiful spots and some lush cypress swamps, and Jackson is a vibrant town with an extraordinary state capitol building. Little Rock has cotton growing in the infield of the airport. Can't say I had even that much of an impression of the airport at Monroe, Louisiana. The state capitol at Baton Rouge was interesting from the air. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Wolfgang Date: 19 Jan 05 - 05:55 AM It's a silly game. I just try to think how Mudcat threads would look like if many persons followed Georgiansilver's example and chose individually different numbers: message with content 2 3 message with content 4 "Silly, you came too late" 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 13 "Hehe, I took your number" message with content 17... But I'm glad nobody yet discovered the fun of posting '1' as the first post in as many threads as possible within one single day. Now, the permathreads, that's something different. Imagine the fun to 'poast': "Ha, fourth time number 100 post in this thread, try to beat that". Wolfgang (remembering nostalgically the times when providing the quickest correct response/link was considered something meriting an honourable mention) |

Subject: RE: BS: WOW!! I posted the 100th message!!! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Jan 05 - 01:54 PM 36, but who's counting? If you get to the airport on Monroe, Louisiana, the best thing you can do is leave again as fast as possible. I discovered, to my dismay, that it was a boring, frumpy, biggotted little town when I took a job there a couple of decades ago. I got out as fast as I could. I worked for the Corps of Engineers, and we hit an impasse when I challenged the office manager on her setting up of segregated holiday office parties. This is a federal employee, and when I pointed out the illegal nature of her act, she said "they choose not to attend the party in the front office." My answer was "you choose not to make them welcome," and I don't think I walked through the office without receiving a glare from her until I left about six weeks later. So, other than some ugly people, there are some beautiful natural areas along the river and bayous. And there was some great bird watching. I got some interesting photos. SRS |
