This year I'm determined to come to the Getaway, God willing. Do we have definite dates or a venue yet? I know it's early but I've got to make plans for my escape :~)

I have been advocating on behalf of the Getaway since the first time I was so warmly welcomed. It is not too early to begin planning, and you will not regret the visit. I am with Max on this one, as I have been for some time. This is a wonderful event, and there aren't many like it.

Well, I really am planning to go for my first getaway! I'm going to fly as far as I can (from Vegas) and then hopefully arrange for transport, since it's not a good idea for a totally blind person to drive. :)

Looking forward to meeting you all! I know I've been sort of a lurker; I'm very much like my cat, but can be very friendly and affectionate (also like my cat) :):)

great, Teresa! It will be good to finally meet you. We have one other blind woman who is usually there...Hey!..maybe we'll put her to guiding you...*grin*

(There is a story about Doc Watson and Kenny Hall playing at some party in California, when it was decided to move the party somewhere else. As folks started downstairs, it was noticed that Doc and Kenny were holding hands...each thinking the other was the guide! They did just fine!)

I've been working for years to shame Valentine Doyle into attending the Getaway. She lives in New Hampshire (or something like that), and she goes to Camp Harmony in California and misses the Getaway. Those of you who know her, please help me twist her arm. She's right on the verge of deciding she should go.

Okay, having looked at the website for Ramblewood, I have a question. Do ya'll book cabins or stay outside the campground? Do you do meals there? Do you camp in tents? Hmmm? Curious minds want to know!!!!!!!!!

And for anyone else who is curious as to what Ramblewood is like, he's a clicky:

Being very near (relatively) to the Getaway site (in Richmond, VA)you'd think I'd have made it to at least one - but every year I've had something else planned for that weekend and couldn't make it. Firm intention is to be there this time around and probably with a couple of other friends in tow.

Ha, Bill!

Long story made short: I was at a recent science-fiction convention, and someone thoughtfully found a guide for me. A woman came into a discussion group and sat down next to me, and I heard her check her talking clock. We introduced ourselves and then she said, "I'm visually impaired, but I can see to give you a guide!" Well, there wasn't much guiding going on; mainly talking and meeting mutual friends for the rest of the convention! very fun. :)

Oct. 14-17 at Camp Ramblewood, for sure.

LilyFestre--when you arrive, you'll be assigned bedspace in a cabin, unless you prefer the privacy of your own tent. (You'll probably get the assigned bedspace anyway, in case you get cold.) Friday dinner is a potluck; since people arrive at all hours, it doesn;t make sense to have a dinner served at any particular time. After that, all meals are provided.

While we're at it, there's a date shift for 2006 to November 3-6, 2006. We'd like to try another camp (closer to DC, with heat and even more gathering spaces for music!) but the mid-October date wasn't available. More details on this later.

$5 per week between now and then pays your way in.
Double that and you have a very reasonable airfare included.
Tuck a little more in the jar, and you've got a nice fat fund for the auction.

Carpool and spend even MORE on all the CD's you'll want to take home!

WYSIWYG--This is the year that, once you and Hardy finish all your Sunday morning duties, you're going to have to drive down and join us for Sunday evening and into Monday morning. Yeah, it's not the whole thing, but trust me, it's worth the trip to the other side of Pennsylvania for the Sunday evening alone.

Wish we could, Charlie, but we'll have to wait till Hardi can take a whole weekend/Monday, and until it's at a flat handicap-friendly venue. But I am available to scout the location for accessibility suggestions, between now and 2006 when I pass through the area on biz travel.

I'll just have to pack a backpack full of those handy dandy handwarmers! You know, the kind you whack and they heat up instantly? I'll put 'em in my sleeping bag, and here and there.......I'll use 'em all up in short order and then I'll fill the pack with all the new CDs I'll acquire while there!   Might even nab a few mudcatters to take home with me, too!    It's gonna be fun!!!

Leadfingers & everybody,

Until a few years ago this was mostly a local FSGW event. Everyone who usually attended knew it was going to happen, and they all knew they would get their applications in "eventually," and so did the folks putting it all together.... So, no one paid much attention to making the application forms available sooner than, say, August :-).

Now that we have folks coming from Alaska and the British Isles etc we are having to arrange things so people can make their plans somewhat earlier.... We're working on it, we're working on it....

Joe, or Max, or Jeff, do you know why we aren't getting links at the top to former Getaway threads? I thought that was automatic when a thread had "Getaway" in the subject but maybe I have misunderstood.... First time ever, if so.... I just asked and Bill says somebody has to make it happen.

Anyway I think if you search for "FSGW" and/or "Getaway" you'll get lots & lots of information about what the weekend and the camp are like. But ... only believe the good stuff, the rest is a pack of lies put out by people who are too chicken to stand a little chilly weather (30 degrees inside the cabins isn't really bad, is it, Mike?) and a few minor hills....

Anyway if you find one of the earlier Getaway threads you will see all the relevant links.

I'll be there for the entire 3 days this time around so I can pester more folks but I'll be danged if I'm gonna sleep in 30 degrees again so I'm gonna bring plenty of matches and burn down a few cabins to stay warm...

But just in case it is warm, I'm bringing my swimming trunks fir the pool...

I'm also gonna revive some of my old songs from my former life so that when I go to the various workshops I'll have more to offer than MIssissippi Delta and Hill Country Blues...

Might even bring the P-Vine...

Gonna bring some moonshine, too...

Gonna do a song with KT at one of the concerts, too... We're gonna do Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Keep My Grave Kept Clean"... She don't know it yet but she will...

Gonna spend more time with my pal of pals, Ebbie, who has bailed me out of more crap here than any other Catter. Sho nuff am...

Gonna bring some "real" food, too, although the night we had salmon it was purdy good...

Not gonna attend no workshops that are entitled "Care of Muses" where folks sit around and look at a bunch of candy on a table...

Gonna bug WYSusan from now until then to come 'cause she's my bud...

Gonna spend more time with Mario, my bud Ted, Kendall and Jacqie an', well, everybody... Sniff...

Gonna get up with Ken Shotz (?) and get him to learnt me up that acapelo song he did last time...

Gonna find the Mudcat Cabin, unless its one that I burn to keep watm, to hang in a couple nights and jam and get drunk... Okay maybe not get drunk...

Yep, thats what Iz gonna and ain't gonna do, fir sure...

WYSIWYG--
The camp for 2006 is flat (and handicapped-friendly). It's on the shores of an inlet of Chesapeake Bay. Downside for you: it's a little bit father from Pennsylvania.

Folks who remember last years frigid temperatures--
Our FSGW house meterologist did some analysis on weather patterns and assures us that we've had a run of three unusually cold years, and that last year was improbably cold. Statistics being what they are, there's no guarantee of a warmer-than-normal weekend next year, but at least the odds of it being that cold again are very small.

And no x-cuses, WYSusan. They done moved it so you could be there. You pick, either the flat land around the Chesapeake 'er your house. I thought you'd see it my way...

Cold? Who said it was cold. Bunch of sissies. I wore my sandals the whole weekend, although at night I did put on some socks. And the only coat I brought with me was a little fleece thing. 2004 Getaway wasn't cold, in Alaska we'd have called it "refreshing". You want cold, come on up here right now.

PS: Check this our: The Aurora Borealis has been very active in the Anchorage area these last few days. This is what the sky looks like when its COLD.

Mick, bring a shoehorn. Or butter. Butter sounds like more fun.

I'm looking forward to this. I thought I was OK last year, but I still wasn't up to my normal level of insanity. I may be better this year, but I find I just don't have the stamina to stay up late that I used to, but I might be wrong about that too! Gotta start learning some new songs. Gotta put a tune to the NJ Turnpike song.

Don - go. You can sell jewelry, and you don't even have to hang out in a booth. What most folks do is plop their stuff on a table with the prices on it, and leave a box for the money. Of course, you can't ensure people put bracelets on the correct way.

Bobert, I'll follow you to the Mudcat cabin. Maybe we can do "Follow Me Down to Mudcat." Please don't burn the cabin down.

Alaska Mike, thanks for the links to those beautiful photos of the aurora borealis.

Will someone tell me where the Getaway will be in 2006 or, at least, give me a clue? Is it that lovely place where the Getaways used to be?

Everyone, I'm looking forward to seeing you and making music with you. If you're sick, get well, and if you're well, stay healthy.

Hotdiggety damn, guys. Sounds good. Pauline L is bossy, isn't she? Sounds like orders to do us good, tho'. Any Texas folks planning to make the trip? Should we hook up? Carpool? Or convoy? And be prepared for -- uh, "refresshing"? -- temps. Izzat right, Alaska? (Thanks for the pics.)      Tw

1. No, I'm not bossy.

2. If anyone wants to come to the DC area a day or two before the Getaway, you are welcome to stay at my place. It isn't large or fancy, but I've got a lot of CDs and books of music.

*grin* I would say Pauline is one of the least bossy people I've ever met.

Well I have sent off an e-mail offering to do a Whistle Workshop - AND
received a reply !!! All I need to know is what I need to lug across the pond - Do I need to bring sleeping bag ? Air travel is a pain for carrying too much !! I dont intend bringing too many instruments - just a mandolin and a banjola -And a whistle or three of course .
Incidentally , Bobert , I have been known to play a bit of blues on whistle , if it sounds interesting !
