There is an opportunity for humor there that I'm going to ignore...

There are usually a lot of spare blankets floating around and people who get cold are the ones who don't ask. (Possibly because they don't think a nice autumn day will go all antarctic on them at night.) Instruments are usually lent if one asks, as are many things, but it's best to bring your own toothbrush and socks.

I've played blues on fiddle before, Bobert!

Bill, it will be GREAT to see you again, and to meet Skipjack!

Bobert, the song you've (bossy!) ordered KT to learn is "See That My Grave is Kept Clean," yes? Oh, and tell Eve I'd love it if she comes! If she can put up with that much folk music, and that many folk musicians.... (Poor Eve, she is no doubt going to be addressed as "P-vine" by everyone in sight....)

For Leadfingers, Bill S, anyone else who's traveling by air, as Pauline said someone will be glad to provide you with a sleeping bag, or pillows & blanket, etc. A lot of people now bring extra gear and make it available, but better you should exchange PMs with someone and make sure it will definitely be there. Plenty of time for that.

Snuffy -- any chance you might get over here too? That would be fine.

Tannywheeler, make darned sure you aren't underdressed, or we will find you frozen into a block of ice in the morning.... Just kidding, that only happens to people who get tossed into the pool....

Pauline, we are planning to try a camp called West River in 2006. It's in Maryland, on the -- surprise! -- West River. A lovely camp, all cabins are heated and have a central area where we can hold a workshop. Plus a good sized dining hall and a nature center. It has its quirks of course but it is very nice.

It's difficult to find a camp for the Getaway. It has to be big enough to hold us all. That let out dozens of very nice camps. And then, it has to be priced in a way that doesn't drive people away. Hard to find in a large camp. We'll give this one a try.

Well goodness, the FSGW MiniFest is Feb 5, and the Washington Folk Festival is June 4-5, and we usually don't get our minds set for the Getaway until after those two events. BTW For those who can make it to the D.C. area, the Washington Folk Festival in particular is a Wonderful Event, and of course there are always mudcatters who will give you a place to stay for the weekend. Y'all come.

Rita

Amos,

If you can remember what hilda fish said on the RE: BS: liberty, freedom, and violence thread, and try to curb your vitriolic (perhaps venemous) comments about people who disagree with you, I might be able to help you with some of the cost. I have been there ( re unemployed). It is usually better to have ALL points of view present, unless one just wants to hear oneself talk.

Bruce, that's more kind of you than I can say, but I couldn't accept such an offer. I expect I will be there and to be employed at the time as well.

I will try to improve my attitude. As a rule, my sarcasm is not for those who merely disagree with me, but for those who bully, act sanctimonious, or stop straight communication.

Thanks for adding me, Bobert, but Oy Vey and Begorrah! Mick's in! I can just imagine this...

A la 'Bad to the Bone':

Da da da da DUM thump, thump,
thump thump thump thump

Da da da da DUM thump, thump,
thump thump thump thump

Da da da da DUM - I've been a wild rover
thump, thump, - For many's the year
thump, thump, - I've spent all my money
thump, thump, - on whiskey and beer
and then the rest of the verse, then:
I said "No"
I said "No, nay"
I said "Never, no more"
Y'all, I won't never play
That wild rover no more

Tom & Linn, I hope you can make it. I think you'd enjoy it a lot.

Okay, now that we've gathered up a little steam, yeah, we'll do "Bad to the Bone" cept it looks as if we've taken on two new members in the band. Let me see if I got this right? It's:

Me
KT
L-Fingers
B-Mick
Jeri
Amos

...and Sinsull is is the manager

This is gonna be ba-ba-ba-ba-bad, bad to the bone...

Hey, given that most of the folks who attend the concerts are the old folkies from the DC Folk Society, we're gonna need some medical folks to carry 'um out and revive 'um...

An', well, we prolly won't get invited to share no more retreats with these folks so Iz gonna have to swear each of you all in as co-conspirators...

Poor KT... She's going "Hey, I can't sing that repulsive song!"

Sure you can, girl. I'll bring little mountain sippin' stuff to get ya thinking that you is bad to the bone... Sho nuff will...

Oh heavens above Amos, you've just got to come. We haven't had any music in Quite That Style since the late and well loved Dave Olive, in his persona as Blind Harry Palms, sang "Ba-ba-ba-ba-Ba-Bar-Bree Allen"

I'm still trying to think of something bad enough to say to Bobert in retaliation for his comment about "old folkies from the D.C. Folk Society" but alas nothing comes to mind that I can post here.... I would threaten not to drive out to the country for any more visits to his charming, comfortable home with all the bird feeders and the gorgeous garden, chat with P-vine (sorry Eve) and get fed any more delicious dinners, but ... somehow that just doesn't cut it.

Okay, karen... Yer in but ya better bring an extra lung cause we're gonna do "Bad to the Bone" and Iz gonna be playing a resonator guitar... Maybe you could also show up in a G-string and pasties since yer kazzo is gonna get drowned out... Ahhhh, no, bad idea... We're an all-Americanm apple pie band... Make that no pasties... Just you and the kazoo...

(Are you ouyt of yer mind, Bobert? Like we only got one reviver, not 20 of 'um, dangit...)

In re: finding places to have Getaway -- don't VA and MD have state parks with various facilities? It wouldn't make sense for y'awl to use Texas State Park facilities, but mightn't there be something similar near you? 'Course, I'm new to the mix, and you may have already looked into that and had a good reason to discard the idea.

Any Texas Mudcat Getaway attendees: Should we join up to carpool or convoy? Might that be a plan? As I think about doing this I consider other personal "errands" I could deal with in/near D.C., so might go several days early. Alternatively, a train trip to Wash., then rent vehicle for G., then home on train -- might limit gas usage and driving stress. Party going up on train? I'm starting to obsess. Gonna go think about something else.    Tw

One medium-sized person with an acceptable voice, one whistle (though I am not great on it; but have some time to practice!) coming at ya. I'll work around keys and time signatures, and I am also a very good listener and cheerer-on! I'm a bit leery of bringing my guitar on a flight, so may borrow someone's for a few here and there, if that's ok!

Tannywheeler--

Believe me, the FSGW folks know about every facility available within a couple of hours of DC. I've personally researched ALL of them. The Getaway actually began at Prince William Forest Park, a U.S. National Park Service facility some 25 miles south of DC in Virginia (near Triangle and Quantico). The last time we tried to hold the Getaway there (just before we moved to Ramblewood), we didn't fit. There were some state parks that looked like they had nice facilities, but Texas (or even the middle of West Virginia) are just too far to drive for the weekend.

Big Mick & Jeri, having come during our transition year, will tell you what our state park facilities were like...'rustic' is the polite term...though Debbie McClatchy's cooking wasn't bad.. The limit there is about 150, and we are hoping to get closer to 175+ when we get all 'adjusted'...
There simply is no perfect camp for our purposes...it's always some combination of cold, or expensive, or hilly, or rustic or 'no alcohol' or too far away..pick any 2.

But as they say..."Good, though"

Sinsull,

Well, heck, this one is easy... I perform with a variety of folks, who vary from gig to gig, as "Sidewalk Bob (me) & the Pedestrians (the band)... But I reckon to keep everything on the up and up maybe for the Getaway it will be "Bad to the Bone Sidewalk Bobert and the Bad to the Bone Pedestrians"...

But fir the record, I'm still gonna do "Please Keep My Grave Kept Clean" with KT (sans the Bad to the Bone Pedestrains...)

Bobert

Mumble, mumble, don't get to the computer for a few days and folks go and organize all kind of stuff without ya.... I gotta say Bobert, that the Flying Monkeys has some real visual draw going for it.... I'm thinking I may need to invest in that collection of neon boas to help costume the group (Secret Santa sent me one, but we need real funk with these blues)..... Hats and sunglasses.... There is some great potential here.....

Ya know SINS we might have another extravaganza to orchestrate here....hmmmmm. If I can get things settled here I'll have to ramble your way and start the advance planning....

The date is on the calendar. Extra bedding will be packed...definately got the brain going...

Is Bobert wearing his straw hat with the spider? It may clash with the boas.

Why are you guys being mean to SINSULL? it is possible she will be a model of decorum at this Getaway.

SINSULL and decorum just don't fit together. It wouldn't be any fun if she behaved.
