I think that the last line of the chorus should be:

"Ohrgesplittner lauten Boomer Bird".

Ohrgesplittner I think is a made-up word meant to sound German and meaning ear-splitting. The real German word for this is ohrbetaubend.

There is a rifle cartridge called the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer. Evidently the cartridge was named after the song.

Today I found on Spotify:

Both of the above stick pretty close to the lyrics already posted—except that the background singers don't seem to be trying to sound like they're German or have German accents. Then there's this:

SPATZENHAUSEN – KATZENHAUSEN – THE LOUDENBOOMER BIRD sung by Eve Boswell on "Eve Boswell International Vol. 1" (2007) – which is entirely in German, or possibly Afrikaans—I'm not sure I could tell the difference. The words are entirely different from "kleine kleine fliegel-flugel" etc. I'm not even sure it's about a bird.

Eve Boswell, by the way, was NOT, as I first assumed, a member of the Boswell Sisters; she was apparently unrelated to them. She was born in Hungary, lived in the UK for a while, and died in South Africa. Some of her songs were definitely in Afrikaans, some in English, some in French—that's all I've been able to verify.

Is it a coincidence that our last guest is from Cape Town?

Isn't it funny how things translate! I am in Australian Scouting and just had this song sent to me by an old Scouting friend in the UK who heard it at Summer Camp this year. I was taught this verse at school. I know all the different versions differ but I learnt the one that goes:
Early in the morning,

Then at the end you say to the next person "your turn" and you all sing it in like a round. I don't know the other verses or how to pronounce any of it, but I know this is right.
P.S Some of it is German. Eine Kleine means small.

19 January 2005 was the date I asked about this one! Thanks to Joe Offer in August 2009 I have a version of it on my computer. Now, at last it seems we have found the Holy Grail. I'm sure the Rosemary Clooney version as heard on You Tube, thanks to Jim Dixon, is the one I was remembering.

My father was an Eagle Scout from the West Virginia Appalachians in the mid 60s and 70s, I was brought up on this song and always thought I was crazy when I got older and could find nothing about it online... anyways, good to find, save the chorus was different, like so:

Jim, I certainly did get everyone to sing the responses. I often tell them I don't intend to do all work myself, and I quote dear old Alex Campbell, who used to say, 'this is a folksong, an if you folks don't sing, it ain't gonna work!'
It can be hard work teaching a whole new chorus, even though it's a round-the-room session and there are plenty of singers, but I find they're always up for anything that involves shouting something like 'oi!'. There's a Harry Champion music hall song with the chorus I never get the knock when the boys shout 'cock! cocketty-cock-cock...' Even the shy ones take great pleasure in shouting 'cock!' at the tops of their voices. The repeating line format goes down well, with songs like Three men of Bristol city; I shall have to try 'em out with Gilly-Gilly-Ossenfeffer -- do you know that one?

At last, thanks to Martin Valentine, we now have a reliable title and origin for this song. This enabled me to find a recording at YouTube which even has a photo of the record label. (This one is a 7-inch 45-rpm record issued in the USA.) I have transcribed it below.

The "hook" of this song is the German (or pseudo-German) pronunciation of many words. Accordingly I have applied my (imperfect) knowledge of German phonetics. Any words that are not standard English, I have put into italics and tried to spell as if they were German. Of course, most of them are not really German, either, but they are pronounced as if they were. The spellings are my own invention; I haven't seen any sheet music.

Hmmm. This is the first time I've seen a quote from this song with the word "oxenbecken" in it. I wonder if that's a reference to the oxpecker, an African bird that sits on the backs of large animals and eats the parasites off them.

I have no idea what the German word for oxpecker is. It wouldn't surprise me if the songwriter, inspired by the oxpecker, rendered it as "oxenpecker" or "oxenpecken" in pseudo-German.

According to sleeve notes supplied it is called "Kliener Kliener Bird" (although I suspect it is Kleine) and my recording is from a show called "The One O'Clock Spot" recorded live for the BBC Light Programme at the Aeolian Hall, Bond Street, on 12th November 1959, and starring Ronnie Aldrich and the Squadronaires, featuring Joan Baxter, Ken Kirkham, Peter Morton and Cliff Townsend with his singing saxophone.....

Transcription, hell! We don't even have a verified title for the song, or singer, or other source, such as a movie.

The most specific source anyone has mentioned is the album Kids Tunes, which GUEST,Tammy mentioned above. Unfortunately, even the publisher's web site doesn't give a track list, and Allmusic.com doesn't list the album.

The old Saturday Evening Post used to have a humor page where sometimes a little 'dialogue' between "Heinrich Schnibble" and some other entity would appear...using that kind of language.

German seems more easily adaptable to cheap parody than Polish or Hawaiian.

They used to sing it on Oh Boy. Cliff and Marty and The Vernon Girls and Jess Conrad and people like that used to line up at the end of the programme and sing it just for a lark.

Luckily ITV reception was so bad that someone used to insist on it being turned off before the finish. So I never got to see The Wild Bunch at play - probably saved me from a life of drugs.

Barrie, Barrie, Barrie! I have been suffering from this same problem for years! As a teenager, one night I suddenly remembered this little ditty, wrote it down on a piece of paper and stuck it on my wall. I then moved out some years after, my room was painted, the piece of paper was taken down; and ever since then the first line "Eine kleine fliegel flugel aufgeweckene biegel bugel" of the song will pop into my head and drive me mad for days because I can't remember the rest. The only thing I remember is it ends with "birdie".If you should ever solve this little riddle, take out an advert in the major newspapers around the world! PLEASE!

A fellow student once told me about a big East Coast newspaper sometimes publishing funny verses in Pennsylvania Dutch. It was in the late 60ies. Can anybody help me out with informations?

A reference I remember is:

Mustn't it be the other way round with your grandma? Germans tend to pronunce the English w like v, due to the German usage. Although the double u should be pronounced as labial, we Germans use it now for the voiced labio-dental. The use of v is ambiguous, unvoiced labiodental like f and voiced labio-dental like the English v. Don't ask me for the hidden logic, I'm afraid there is none.
The pronunciation of Ruth [also German spelling] like Rut is standard procedure in German. Luther designed the aspiration of the Hebrew taw by adding an h which is not spoken in our language.

Reminds me of Dave Morrah, who wrote some books retelling fairy tales and poems in fractured German-English; I think one of them was called Der Wizard in Ozzenland. This would have been around the late 50s/early 60s. The lyrics aren't his, clearly, or they'd start: "Earlisch in den Morgen".

As for mastering our "th", Europeans are constantly exposed to English through music, films and Bush's posturing, and they often have an active need to use it themselves. But when do we in America hear ANY German? Even foreign visitors prefer to speak English here, as their English is quite fluent - if not better than ours. Learning foreign languages in America is an exercise in futility; one's knowledge too quickly fades from disuse. So don't bother us with your silly umlauts; give us a trilled r for Spanish, and we're set for life. :-}

Meine kleine Grossmutti lived in America for close to sixty years, and although she generally spoke English quite well and named one of her American daughters "Ruth", she always said "t" instead of "th". (She also pronounced "v" like "w"; I never figured out the logic behind that.)

The hit version I knew was recorded by Don Lang in the early 1960's. I remember seeing him perform it on the "6:05 Special" (fans of Pete Murray - 2 minutes silence).

I have heard the song Compton mentioned (which may not be Eine Kleine Fliegel Fluge Bird at all) sung at a Scout camp in the Adirondacks, which claims to have created it about 50 years ago. Its similar lyrics are as follows:

The whole song seems to be intended to sound like German; there are some witty puns (for German ears).
- kleine = small
- fliegel = the added L rhymes with the next word. Fliegen = to fly, Fliege = the fly
- flugel = Flügel = the wing (when will you Anglo-Saxons finally learn to pronounce this easy sound? We mastered your goddam TH!)
- aufgeweckene = aufgeweckte = pt. pf. pass. of to wake up
- biegel = like fliegel, from biegen = to bend
- bugel = Bügel = coat hanger, stirrup, yoke et al.
- ergeschplitten = ? to split with a German ending?
- lauteboomer = booming loud

Lederhosen = leather trousers; common in Bavaria, and associated with entire Germany all over the world.

Sorry to be of no more help.

Hans Breitmann's Ballads are influenced by Pennsylvania Dutch; Cleland studied in Heidelberg where he achieved a good handling of German. I noticed that he choose mostly German words which sound similar in English with a bad accent. His poems in Chinese Pidgin are very funny, too. I can only recommend them very strongly.

Thanks for your attempts to help me. I think it has now succeeded in driving me completely round the bend! I don't speak German, so tried an alta vista translation of variations on spelling and came up with "a small flies flight on gewechene bends to nose gel erge schplitte loud more boomer" as the English meaning of "eine kleine fliege flug auf gewechene biege buggel erge schplitte laute boomer".
Can someone now give me advice on how to get away from the men in white coats?
