Right in the middle on the line between the quiet 500's & 600's. I'd rather give someone an opportunity to come than just swap campsites, though. I think I'll probably leave the ticket at the gate, if no one here wants it.

I am really looking forward to this weekend. I am recovering from a very odd cold/sinus infection which has left me without a voice for the past 3 weeks - not a great thing for a radio host!   I look forward to saying hi to fellow Mudcatters, but please excuse me if I can only growl a "hello"!

Old Songs is my favorite festival and it has become an annual booster shot for me!

I believe it is a tradition at OS for it to rain on Friday evening in order for the rest of the weekend to be as humid as possible. At least this has been my experience thus far.

Carmen and I are nearly packed and are looking forward to seeing so many friends again. Because of time crunches we opted to leave the camper behind. We'll be at the Super 8 during the few non-waking hours of the weekend.

Seeya there!

Just had a week of practice, staying up until all hours playing music at the first Northeast Heritage Music Camp, a really fine experience, and I'm still floating (and pretty sleep deprived) But I'll be in great shape to do the late night stuff at Old Songs. I also discovered that I wake up around 6 a.m. like clockwork, no matter when I got to bed, so I guess that the quite at night section is the right place to be.

Looking forward to seeing you all, and some of my new camp buddies, and Swedish fiddlers and John Whelan and Michael Cooney and. . . and . . . Well, it's a good thing it's less than a week away.

Jeri, thanks for the imaginary ride! I would enjoy it too.

Kendall, I'm hoping it's something like that. There has been a little squeaking since last August, my mechanic said there is a tension adjustment device that should "eventually" be replaced. I hope that's the problem! Last time I had squeaking like that it was the main drive chain (???) or some such thing. Whatever, it would have cost about twice what the old car was worth. This Saturn was the replacement, a 94 SW I bought 4 years ago for $3600. Have really enjoyed it, too, and put some miles on it.

The increase in squeaking from trivial to LOUD is quite recent. Bill and I were up to our ears in work for the Washington Folk Festival and I was totally wiped after the Festival, so didn't deal with it right away. I had NO plans to drive any distance right now.... With luck I can find out tomorrow.

Rita, if I didn't have to work and my car wasn't a mechanical crap shoot, I'd drive down there just for the car trip back to Old Songs and the singing in the car!

I hope Charlie can make it though. I once had to give up my ticket because the Air Force decided I really needed to go hang out in Kuwait for a few weeks. Kuwait was so exciting that I actually noticed how long it took doggie doo to dry up and blow away (about 3 days), but I was REALLY mad that I couldn't go to Old Songs.

I have a brand new, quality tent (not cheap, but I got it for half of its 'list price') which hopefully will not collapse like the old P.O.S. did.

Nope. Bill doesn't get to come.

If I can't go, I'll post a message here as early as possible in hopes someone will take pity on Dick and Susan and provide them with some (paid!) help so they can hear some music. The hitch, alas, is that I was planning to ride up with Charlie Baum and I'm sorry to say Charlie may not be able to go.

Is anyone driving up who might be able to take on a passenger -- actually, TWO passengers -- from the Maryland/DC area? The extra passenger would be Danny Spooner, who's also planning to ride up with Charlie.

Am busy exploring other options. Tomorrow I'll have the "awful screechy noise" in my car checked out, who knows, maybe it will make the trip after all. And Danny has been looking into bus schedules.

Wouldn't post all this detail here but am hoping someone can help us figure out a fallback position in case Charlie can't leave town next weekend.

Rita

Well if things go very, very well :-) I'll be going this year for the first time. I'm working on it.

Will be staying at a motel because I need an air conditioned respite & lots of sleep. (Sigh....) If anybody's awake during the daytime I hope I'll get to see you, if I go I'll be helping Dick & Susan with the Camsco table, and catching some workshops from time to time when I'm not napping in the corner (or napping under the Camsco table, which I actually did once at NOMAD).

I've got a camping spot that's diagonally opposite the main stage, in the friggin' 'Quiet' area! I think it's likely because I waited too long to register...

Jeri, if you're in the infield, it doesn't matter anymore. Everything inside the fairgrounds is now "quiet at night." All the "music at night" camping spaces are down in part of the field that used to be day trippers' parking.

We camped down there for two or three years, but always felt sort of like we weren't really at the festival at all. This year Kendall managed to wangle a space down in the opposite corner of the infield from where you're at, the corner nearest the main stage, and he sent our application in with his and Jacqui's so we get adjoining spaces.

I'm not sure the "quiet at night" will bother me that much. I get sleepy a lot earlier than I used to, especially after a day in the sun. But I can always go visiting in the "music at night" area if need be.

I'm curious if, now that the whole infield it supposed to be "Quiet at night," the normal big late-night (mostly fiddle music) jam in the stage 3 area will still happen, or they'll try to suppress it...

Peter.

i Just got my tickets in the mail a couple of days ago, and it sounds like I'm camping near Jeri. I may be able to carry her back to her tent late at night, post-jamming. I actually like that area for camping, and the longish distance from the jamming area to the tent is more than made up for by the relative closeness of the tent to the bathrooms. Think about it--you'll make one trip each night from jamming back to your tent, and how many middle-of-the-night trips from your tent to the toilet?

See y'all there...

I received my ticket yesterday. I've got a camping spot that's diagonally opposite the main stage, in the friggin' 'Quiet' area! I think it's likely because I waited too long to register, so I can't really blame anyone but myself, however...

I felt fairly beat-all-to-hell last year from camping and walking and walking some more. Add the distance of the site I've been given together with getting even less sleep than I normally do, because 'quiet at night' means 'noisier than hell in the morning', and the possibility that I might be stupid enough to carry instruments around (I doubt it), and I'll be surprised if I can still walk when it's over. A big part of why I go to Old Songs is the jamming. Oh well. At least I'll be there...I think. I'm not 100% sure of that right now.

Carmen and I finally sent off for our tickets. We are both looking forward to a great weekend filled with fine music and some wonderful folks. Carmen may have her work cut out for her to keep me out of the Instrument Exchange. I purchased a fine set of pennywhistles and a lovely button accordion there last year.

Hmm. Maybe I ought to try typing the message before I hit the "submit" button.

What I meant to say was, we just got our tickets, and we're sharing a square with Kendall and Jacqui, in the 400s, down across from Area 3 but closer to the main stage. That's funny, 'cause the area is designated "quiet at night," but it'll probably be one of the noisier areas at the festival, what with the main stage shows and the standard late fiddle jam in stage 3...

Peter.

Hi Kendall. We're planning to go and will be in the yellow 200's. It doesn't look too far from the gate near the Dutch Barn, and I'm certainly not going for the quiet, so we'll be playing some music-at-night and other times, when we can break away from all the great programs! The only other time we camped there was in that red "quiet" area, which was "stuck way the hell and gone from the performance areas" as you said. Swore I'd never do that again.

I was just wondering how they numbered the yellow area, to try to figure out where we might be.

Looking forward to re-acquainting myself with my fiddle, for one thing, and then there are all the mudcats I hope to meet and re-meet. And we're camping with some friends we're looking forward to seeing. Not necessarily in that order.

RV popups and trailers are in the Red quiet at night areas. They are stuck way the hell and gone from the performance areas. Quiet at night is the orange areas, those are in the loop inside the track.

The yellow areas are in the woods and field down by the Dutch Barn entrance. You can also park an RV there. That's music all night.

I asked for, and got site number 408 A which is in the loop at the end nearest the performance area (main stage). As far as I know, the Cadys will be next to us.
barbara, pm me with your e mail address and I'll send you a picture of the area.

Same offer for Old Songs travelers as for Getaway-- if your route to Old Songs takes you anywhere near Routes 6 & 15 in north central PA (an hour south of the NY border), you're welcome to stop the night here on the way there or back.

I don't camp at Old Songs mainly because of the craft biz. If this next year is like last, spending the day dealing with so many Mudcatters, most of whom have greater or lesser cases of Intricate Personality Disorder I will find a comfortable bed and a shower I can monopolize to be a really good thing.

But if you want the camping experience while still staying in a motel let me suggest the Star Light. Mushrooms on the baseboards and
damp floors with out the direct bennefit of rain can be had for only $ 78.00 per eve'ning.

But if I were camping again like I did 20 years ago it would be in the music all night crowd. Having IPD myself I couldn't imagine a better bunch to camp with.

Last year (2004) I stayed in the music-at-nite RV area, and I was actually closer to the main stage and midway than I was in the old days when I stayed at the far end of the fairgrounds. The music was there, but not so loud as to interfere with sleeping when that was really needed. Actually, the sound from the main stage was louder than the several acoustic jams going on.

I hope to get a mudcat tee shirt by then (human style) and surprise some of you.

I talked elsewhere about being in a songwriting workshop, and before it got started, a guy who played African drums asked to borrow someone's guitar and played the most amazing fingerstyle stuff. He could only use the pads of his fingers because something about the calluses he had from drumming made it impossible to use the tips. The guy was Fode Sissoko. This guy is a real treat to be around. Great musician and someone who loves talking to people. Many of the other folks on the schedule are the same way, but Fode was unfamiliar to me before Old Songs (a couple of years ago, I think).

Peter, I'm game for it. I usually just have a small tent, and there are 4 small tent plots per square. I don't know who I'd go in with (you guys?), but if we arranged things right, there'd be room for a big tent-free jam-zone. Last year was pretty bad, location-wise, because Kendall & Jacqui and Peg were about as far away from everything as you can get. I went down a couple of times, but no one was home, and it was too friggin' far to walk to find nobody home!

To tell you the truth, I am getting REAL close to thinking about being a motel wimp or checking out how much it would cost to rent a motor home for the weekend. I also don't know how I would go about getting a license for a larger vehicle - the biggest thing I've ever driven is a deuce-and-a-half (2.5 ton truck).

Another fine fiddler to listen to is Becky Tracy from the trio Nightingale who will be there. This group was one of the many "discoveries" I've made at Old Songs in the past. They played mainly Irish and French Canadian music, as well as some of their own material that was in a traditional style. Tunes and songs, and all very tastefully done. I'm not sure who's playing in John Whelan's band right now, but that has some fiddler potential as well!

And then there are all the great singers listed...at least as long a list as the fiddlers!

Looking forward to it all!

By the way, it doesn't seem fair to blame the Old Song organizers for the camping situation. From what I've been told it was the state of NY that mandated changes.    Nothing ever stays the same, we just adapt to whatever changes come along and enjoy the ride.

I have found the last couple of Old Songs rather disappointing, compared to before they f***ed up the camping arrangements and put anyone who wanted music in camp nine miles out in the boondocks.

It would be interesting if all the mudcatters who were going to camp were able to secure a block of adjoining sites and have a mini-Gathering. Kendall and I tried to pull off something like that last year but ended up with us and Peg, which was better than all alone but less than what we had in mind. Think it's doable this year?

Peter.
