The lisy is up for 2005. Looks good to me.   Of course I'll probably be selling jewelry and miss most of it.

Well, there'll be several 'Catters there in the crafts and vendors area:
Don Meixner, for one. Sandy paton will be there with the Folk-Legacy Booth, and CAMSCO will be there with a bunch of CDs you can't get anywhere else.

Keep Altamont green! Bring money!

Don, the main stage is broadcast on low-power FM (99.5 or somewhere round there). Bring an FM radio.

I have found the last couple of Old Songs rather disappointing, compared to before they f***ed up the camping arrangements and put anyone who wanted music in camp nine miles out in the boondocks.

It would be interesting if all the mudcatters who were going to camp were able to secure a block of adjoining sites and have a mini-Gathering. Kendall and I tried to pull off something like that last year but ended up with us and Peg, which was better than all alone but less than what we had in mind. Think it's doable this year?

Peter.

I will be there! It is a great festival and it appears to be another wonderfully diverse lineup!

By the way, it doesn't seem fair to blame the Old Song organizers for the camping situation. From what I've been told it was the state of NY that mandated changes.    Nothing ever stays the same, we just adapt to whatever changes come along and enjoy the ride.

Wow... I just noticed all the great fiddlers that will be there this year - Tracy Schwarz, Bruce Molsky, Brittany Haas, and Tva among others. That should be worth the price of admission alone!

Another fine fiddler to listen to is Becky Tracy from the trio Nightingale who will be there. This group was one of the many "discoveries" I've made at Old Songs in the past. They played mainly Irish and French Canadian music, as well as some of their own material that was in a traditional style. Tunes and songs, and all very tastefully done. I'm not sure who's playing in John Whelan's band right now, but that has some fiddler potential as well!

And then there are all the great singers listed...at least as long a list as the fiddlers!

Looking forward to it all!

Zhenya

I talked elsewhere about being in a songwriting workshop, and before it got started, a guy who played African drums asked to borrow someone's guitar and played the most amazing fingerstyle stuff. He could only use the pads of his fingers because something about the calluses he had from drumming made it impossible to use the tips. The guy was Fode Sissoko. This guy is a real treat to be around. Great musician and someone who loves talking to people. Many of the other folks on the schedule are the same way, but Fode was unfamiliar to me before Old Songs (a couple of years ago, I think).

Peter, I'm game for it. I usually just have a small tent, and there are 4 small tent plots per square. I don't know who I'd go in with (you guys?), but if we arranged things right, there'd be room for a big tent-free jam-zone. Last year was pretty bad, location-wise, because Kendall & Jacqui and Peg were about as far away from everything as you can get. I went down a couple of times, but no one was home, and it was too friggin' far to walk to find nobody home!

To tell you the truth, I am getting REAL close to thinking about being a motel wimp or checking out how much it would cost to rent a motor home for the weekend. I also don't know how I would go about getting a license for a larger vehicle - the biggest thing I've ever driven is a deuce-and-a-half (2.5 ton truck).

I love Old Songs, but need to stay in the "quiet at night" zone- biorhythms or something, but it's just how I am. Any similarly minded Mudcatters who want to share that kind of space with me, let me know and I'll book with you!

It's a great time! Only 5 months away!

We'll be bringing the motorhome down. The idea of a Mudcatter's enclave sounds good to us. Last year was crazy anyway - sitting around in the evening listening to Kendall and Peter swapping limericks (Peter is DEFINITELY sick!) was a real treat.

Last year (2004) I stayed in the music-at-nite RV area, and I was actually closer to the main stage and midway than I was in the old days when I stayed at the far end of the fairgrounds. The music was there, but not so loud as to interfere with sleeping when that was really needed. Actually, the sound from the main stage was louder than the several acoustic jams going on.

I hope to get a mudcat tee shirt by then (human style) and surprise some of you.

I usually camp in the quiet zones, but roam about the music-at-night zones until the wee hours. When I finally need to collapse for a wee-hour nap, I have a quiet place to do so, and it's
not THAT far a hike from the music-at-night territory.

I don't camp at Old Songs mainly because of the craft biz. If this next year is like last, spending the day dealing with so many Mudcatters, most of whom have greater or lesser cases of Intricate Personality Disorder I will find a comfortable bed and a shower I can monopolize to be a really good thing.

But if you want the camping experience while still staying in a motel let me suggest the Star Light. Mushrooms on the baseboards and
damp floors with out the direct bennefit of rain can be had for only $ 78.00 per eve'ning.

But if I were camping again like I did 20 years ago it would be in the music all night crowd. Having IPD myself I couldn't imagine a better bunch to camp with.

Same offer for Old Songs travelers as for Getaway-- if your route to Old Songs takes you anywhere near Routes 6 & 15 in north central PA (an hour south of the NY border), you're welcome to stop the night here on the way there or back.

DETAILS

Why? Because my husband's schedule does not allow us to go away on weekends, so we like to host people here instead.

If you do this, of course, you take the risk that Kendall will get into the Jamesons and I'll get into the Makers Mark and another dirty limerick shootout will happen...I think Kendall wants a rematch.

We'll be in "quiet at night" so we'll have to start at noon!

My freind Pam and I just confirmed that we'll be making our annual treck. I wasn't sure I could have my cake and eat it too, since I'm going to music camp the week before, but I decided to go for it. We'll be somewhere in quiet at night, but we're like Charlie, we crawl into bed around 3 a.m. and see to manage to sleep through those early risers. Pleased to see Nightengale, Danny Spooner, and didn't I see something about a bunch of Patons? as well as lots of Mudcatters. Oh, and Dick, I'll help with the green up project, I always do.

Does anyone know the numbering scheme for the campsites in the RV-music-at-night area? Is 200 near the gate and the numbers go up towards the back trees? vice versa? none of the above?

RV popups and trailers are in the Red quiet at night areas. They are stuck way the hell and gone from the performance areas. Quiet at night is the orange areas, those are in the loop inside the track.

The yellow areas are in the woods and field down by the Dutch Barn entrance. You can also park an RV there. That's music all night.

I asked for, and got site number 408 A which is in the loop at the end nearest the performance area (main stage). As far as I know, the Cadys will be next to us.
barbara, pm me with your e mail address and I'll send you a picture of the area.

Hi Kendall. We're planning to go and will be in the yellow 200's. It doesn't look too far from the gate near the Dutch Barn, and I'm certainly not going for the quiet, so we'll be playing some music-at-night and other times, when we can break away from all the great programs! The only other time we camped there was in that red "quiet" area, which was "stuck way the hell and gone from the performance areas" as you said. Swore I'd never do that again.

I was just wondering how they numbered the yellow area, to try to figure out where we might be.

Looking forward to re-acquainting myself with my fiddle, for one thing, and then there are all the mudcats I hope to meet and re-meet. And we're camping with some friends we're looking forward to seeing. Not necessarily in that order.

Look for Old Erie Crafter's (Don Meixner's jewelry) in the same spot as last year. Across the way from all them hammered dulcimers. Lots of catching up to do. Probably have a banjo and guitar along as well.
