Following Sam Smiths decision to stop all music in their pubs, White
Horse FC will have to move after almost 30 years.
From Monday 24th Jan till at least Feb 21st we will meet at.

THE FORESTERS ARMS, BECKSIDE, BEVERLEY

We have arranged to stay there until at least Feb 21st (Tim Van Eyken gig) As a trial period.

We are in the front room. We have a stage! How revolutionary, I only hope us poor old buggers can climb up that far.

Now that the deed has been done I'm quite looking forward to the challange of the new venue, and the beer is better!

This doesn't mean we wouldn't be back at Nellies given half a chance.

It is certainly good news that you have found a new home.

However, I worry what we will do when there are no alternative venues for us to find and hope the struggle to find ways to ensure that this day never comes will continue.....

Don't you think think that after all the steps up to Nellies it will be a treat to have just one small step to perform (!) and three paces to the bar... and a new beer to savour (.)
I'm looking forward to Monday.

It will be OK as name - but there might be some problems if you wish to place adverts for it.

F.S.S. Folk Club may just do it - [intially]

As a working name for the club at The Foresters we are using "Not The White Horse Folk Club"
OK it's not brilliant, but we needed some posters in a hurry.
We are still hoping that Humphrey will see sense in the long run and we can reclaim our proper home and title, so please don't f*** him over his decision - he might find he likes it. :-)

While we were talking to the Landlord at the Foresters about the club moving there, he mentioned that he had had a group of lads in the other day from Bishop Burton college. They had come in the play pool, and being strangers he had had a chat with them.
Turns out they normally went into Nellies for the pool but it is now too quiet in there for them.

Humphrey, how many feet can you shoot off?

>> Humphrey, how many feet can you shoot off?

Centipedal, nay, millipedal numbers apparently.

My son plays football on a Saturday and we go into a Sams pub after for chips and beer etc

The manager there is still waiting for a response to a letter to the chairman from December-ish - this is an internal not external thing - just querying the decision and pointing out the effects on trade.

He reckons it has hit his pub since day one - especially the TV going. New Years Eve he shut at 11.15 and the takings were down £1100.

This is weird behaviour, when you ignore your customers BUT even more so when you totally ignore your staff and refuse to even acknowledge the letter or give any reason for behaviour that directly hits the management of the pubs. Shit will hit fan at bonus time apparently (another saving perhaps?). Quite a lot of vacancies around at the moment I believe and more coming soon...

I'm going to post this onto the Sams thread also. Sam Smiths may be a total red herring in all this (sometimes people just genuinely lose the plot and the action itself takes over and power becomes the driving force) - I do take Shambles point that when we all go off to our new venues - what happens next?

From my end I only wanted our little group to survive and it has, albeit not in its original place (but there are some signs that it might be better, could be honeymoon). The players and the (not) folk club from Nellies will also survive and hopefully flourish.

What does a normal person in the street like me do next?

Life is back on an even(ish) keel. Sams appear to be the losers - and, to be honest, I can live with that.

Perhaps we need a new thread (or a permanent one) - I'm not sure how you put it pithily - of "What can everyday folk do to preserve what we have/want given the external pressures that now bear on venues?"

From the Yorkshire Post.

Folk fans' lament for end to live music at pub
Alexandra Wood

FOLK fans have been shocked and disappointed to hear that one of the best-known traditional music venues in the East Riding will no longer be allowed to put on music.

The decision by Yorkshire brewery Samuel Smith's means the regular Monday folk nights at Beverley's White Horse pub will have to stop at the end of the month.

The pub is just the latest to have been affected by a change of policy by the Tadcaster-based brewery, reportedly because of a sharp rise in the price of entertainment licenses.

The brewery was not commenting yesterday, but Richard Wastling, one of the co-founders of the White Horse Folk Club, which started in the pub's upstairs room in 1976, shortly after owner Nellie Collinson retired, said: "It is the perfect venue for traditional music because it is a traditional pub with stone-flagged floors. "It has gas lights and open coal fires and traditional beer brewed using traditional methods. Our artists say there isn't a better room for singing in the country."

Mr Wastling said the licensee had always given them a great welcome and there had been support from the brewery – until now.
The club, which has a large following at home and abroad, would be happy to pay its fair share towards fees. "It is a mutually advantageous relationship and always has been. We have had an extremely good relationship with the brewery over the years."
Mr Wastling, who plays in the White Horse Ceilidh band, is now asking regulars to write to Samuel Smith's, pointing out how much trade they will lose.

The club was the birthplace of the Beverley Folk Festival.
Festival organiser Chris Wade said: "It's terrible. Ever since I have lived in this region I have been coming there. It is a disaster."

First week at the Foresters was packed - 24 people got up to sing. All the regulars were ther and a good number of our "occasional" friends. The landlord couldn't have been more helpful and the beer was much better that Smiths (though rather more expensive of course)

Glad it went well. We're off to our second week at our new venue in Sheriff Hutton tonight, where we are made more welcome too

Just need cheaper beer and the world would be great

As said above Sam Smiths seem the losers - in many senses

Regards

Nick

If I had anyone's number or if anyone would lke me to have their number could you please e-mail me or PM me! Very good night, although I do have concerns that guest nights are going t be a very tight fit. Wel done to the landlord for all his accomodations.
