Personally, I'd rather have somebody start a funny personal attack thread on me than look for and reply to most things I wrote in various threads. If I wanted to feel significant and successful in irritating people, a whole thread all to myself would make me smile and know it was all worth it. Then again, one has to know how to 'fly under the radar' to continue getting away with it. If you want to be successful at the attack game, comment on him personally in different threads, the way he does to others. Starting a thread for him is like as suicide bombing. The only person you're guaranteed to damage is yourself. The personal attacks within threads is more like poisoning. Less obvious, less messy, and you probably won't ever have to worry about being banned. The root of the whole problem is, in my opinion, people taking things too seriously. There are things worth being offended by and arguing against at every opportunity - senseless death, real abuse, apathy. Somebody who insults you on an internet Forum is not worth much, if any, energy. I'm getting tired of people who drop any pretense of being interested in the subject of a thread to get into yet another pissing contest with a troll. It seems like people have absolutely no immunity to trolling, or perhaps they just like being trolled. Hard to figure out. Anyway, humor (something that's been hard to find here recently) reminds me that life shouldn't be taken that seriously. I'm guessing that this thread will disappear too. Folks will leap on yet another chance to bash someone in front of an audience. |

They'll never get it. They don't think of themselves as trolls. And these are some of the most revered members here. Which is why Mudcat has been troll paradise for years. In fact, I'd have to say the membership is now more troll than not. Moderation isn't done here, censorship is what is done here. The trolls here aren't funny and witty. Because John fought back with an attack thread doesn't make him a troll. And therein lies the biggest problem with this forum. The so-called moderators can't distinguish between the two because they've had to blur the lines to protect the guilty members, including themselves. |

In fact the anti-guest hysteria in this forum was fomented by Max, Joe & the clones, which has also done a lot to damage the ambiance around here, and the nasty, negative, relentless attack tone of the forum. There is forum moderation, and then there is censorship. Censorship is what is used here. But it isn't used to keep the forum in good order. Rather, it is used to punish individuals. The point of forum moderation is to maintain a pleasant, mutually respectful atmosphere for spirited, even controversial discussions to take place. Posters police one another, and RARELY should a moderator step in. But when the moderator steps in, they deal with the person causing the problems, not the people reacting to the problem poster. Obviously, that isn't what is being done here. This forum's atmosphere nowadays is all World Wrestling Federation all the time, where it used to be more like the big campfire at the music festival campground (or pub, if you prefer that sort of analogy), that's for sure. Rather than simply blocking access to the problem poster (like Martin Gibson), they censor the people Martin Gibson harrasses, like John. |

Shambles, your'e complaints with Mudcat seem to be about cencorship, as has been explained to you countless times, in many threads both here and in the Help Forum, the only threads that get deleted or closed are troublesome ones, ie arguments that get out of hand, personal attacks and long off topic cut and paste jobs. Nobody else here seems to have a problem with this policy, recently a policy was introduced wherby old BS threads that had run there course were closed [I think the age limit for automatic closing was set at 1 year], though if a subject becomes current again ie, the BS thread subject is in the news or wahtever, any member can ask that the thread in question be re-opened. Multiple threads on the same subject may be combined, these "rules" are for the benefit of Mudcat as a whole. Imagine if you will, that Mudcat is a shop with an out of town owner, Joe is the manager and has been given the owners authority to run it as he sees fit, you have no right to demand that the shop owner intervenes in any disputes, the managers word is final. Your current complaint seems to be that your "Goodbye" thread is closed, well as your'e not leaving/left and came back, there seems little point it been open. However, if you are leaving, simply start a new thread to say your goodbyes in. Though if you carry on moaning and complaining like this, I doubt many people would miss you. |

That is exactly what gets everybody wound up around here, then they simply sit back and wait for the censors to show up. Lazy in the extreme. I have long suspected that at the heart of Martin's need to affront harmless tree huggers and the like is quite a lot of pain. I know its not much comfort when you see sometimes elderly folks reeling from shock at some needlessly hurtful remark. But I do think all the Americans find it quite difficult to empathise with our north of England sense of humour/wordplay. I think it genuinely wrongfoots them, and they think we are all a bit like the swamp people. from the black lagoon - irredeemably base! To be honest I think maybe , we're more like the ozzies than even our south of England brethren. Paul Downes once pointed out to me that Tony Capstick couldn't get away with using the f word down south - audiences would flinch. Whereas Derek Brimstone could stick in a cheery fackin' hell! and get a laugh with same audience. Its your style I would guess that Joe and martin for that matter - they just don't get. I know it is best to ignore him but at the same time I want to stand up to him and slap him back. I'll continue to try to ignore him as I do think he is quite dangerous and possibly mentally ill.
