Subject: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: Big Mick Date: 24 Jan 05 - 07:09 PM Jean Ritchie (our own kytrad) and husband George Pickow travelled and collected extensively, as we all know. Jean has mentioned several times, and in various threads, that the Ritchie Pickow Phototgraphic Archive was acquired by the James Hardiman Library, National University of Ireland, Galway, along with tapes of sound recordings. The photographs were taken and the recordings made by George and Jean on visits to Ireland in 1952 and 1953. Folks, I felt strongly that this deserved a thread of its own. I would encourage you to visit the site, link below, and spend some time. It is a fascinating stroll through the Ireland that was in 1952 and 1953. There are pictures of some of the greatest Uilleann pipers, storytellers, strawboys, average folks, ..... be warned, you will spend a lot of time. The prints are available to order. Many of the prints are redundant, but that is because they literally loaded every one that George shot. As an amateur photographer, I really appreciate this. Give it a look, you won't be sorry. http://www.library.nuigalway.ie/Pickow/about.jsp |

Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: KathWestra Date: 25 Jan 05 - 11:51 AM Hey Mick, thanks for sharing that link. I hadn't seen it earlier, and this is a wonderful collection to prowl through. (but not at work, Kathy!!!) Thanks, George and Jean, for taking all those picture and for writing such meticulous documentary captions of your photos. Awesome! The collection is a little hard to navigate, since there doesn't seem to be an index, but the search function is very good. Try searching on "Pipes" or "fiddle" or "Jean Ritchie" and you'll find lots of good photos of musicians--some of whom we know and love. This site deserves lots of attention. Kathy |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: Big Mick Date: 25 Jan 05 - 07:13 PM It sure is fun to "leaf" through these pictures, Kath. And damn dangerous to your time. I get lost in them. Mick |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: KathWestra Date: 26 Jan 05 - 10:01 AM I noticed as I went to add this page to my bookmarked websites, though, that the invisible "tag" (whatever the techie types call it) inserted at the top of the page (and which shows up as the default name of the site when you click "Add to Favorites") is "Richard" Pickow Archive. George, if you're reading this, you might want to talk with the cyber-archivists/web managers at the university and ask them to fix this! Still a wonderful site, and well worth people's time to explore. Kathy |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: GUEST,Andy Peterson in Portland OR Date: 23 Dec 09 - 01:13 AM The above link did not work. This should be the new link, but my browser timed out and I have not yet gotten onto it. It might just be the time of day, as it is about 5 AM there. http://call.library.nuigalway.ie:8180/Pickow |

Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: Anglo Date: 23 Dec 09 - 01:42 PM Does that link work for you, Joe? I get to the library easily enough, but can't access this archive. I get a "server not responding" message. |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Dec 09 - 04:35 PM No, I can't get beyond that page, either, John. Thanks for the reminder - I e-mailed the Webmaster just now. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: lefthanded guitar Date: 23 Dec 09 - 04:45 PM Can't get the link either. I have had the priviledge of seeing many of George's eloquent photography, and his pictures are stunning, not just as documents but as works of art. |
Subject: RE: Ritchie-Pickow Archive From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Dec 09 - 05:03 PM In the meantime there are some George Pickow photographs at http://www.jeanritchiehome.com/ (but most of them aren't working, either). -Joe- |
