Subject: Whitby Folk Club moves to new venue.
From: alice white
Date: 25 Jan 05 - 04:15 PM

WHITBY CLUB no longer meets at the Plough, and from WED.26TH JANUARY 2005 it will meet at the FRIENDSHIP ROWING CLUB. Club nights will normally be held in the downstairs bar overlooking the harbour.
The club had to find a new venue at short notice due to Samuel Smiths Brewery plolicy on the new licensing laws and the performing of live music in their pubs.
The club will still meet every Wednesday at 8-30pm and will continue to be basically run as a Sing-a-round with musical interludes, where everyone is encouraged to contribute to the friendly atmosphere.
As ever we will be pleased to welcome new or existing friends, holidaymakers, old or young to the FRIENDSHIP any WEDNESDAY you,re in WHITBY.

Folk festival time must have been the most profitable weekend in the year for Nellies and a whole week for The Plough. Although they are both (I think) managed houses surely the manager gets a bonus on sales like other breweries/operating companies. Humphrey may soon have lots of staff vacancies. Surely the man will see sense when his profits are hit.

All Sam Smiths Pubs are managed houses,Humphrey,s never allowed tennants, alcapops, brand name spirits, lagers or stouts to be served in his pubs.
Gill the Plough manager is hoping (praying) that by Folk week in August it will have all blown over. He,s been told to inform the Moor and Coast Festival(Mayday Weekend)that they can no longer hold their events in the Plough. Time will tell.Hey ho!

What a load of plonkers they are! What do they hope to achieve by this, other than reduced sales?
I agree with Gill: lets's hope it blows over by August!

Every cloud has a silver lining, the room to be used now at the Friendship must be one of the best settings in the world never mind Whitby, looking out over the harbour, newly refurbished in a pleasing manner, decent beer and not over priced (compared to other Whitby venues)

It is very sad and somewhat ironic that in this form - i.e not charging admission and paying no performers- there is apparently no reason why this could not continue to take place in Sam Smiths's pubs without PPPL/PRS etc licensing. As PRS are saying that such an event is not chargable...............See the 'ObitSam Smiths and LIVE music'thread for details.

Does this mean there'll be no music in the Plough in the Whitby Folk Week!!!! - Unthinkable!!

I doubt very much that Sam Smith's can afford to pass up on the thirty-odd grand that goes through the tills that week.....

Bugger Sam Smith's, The Plough is the festivals longest serving venue, for me it won't be Whitby Folk Festival without the Plough for several festivals I almost lived there for the week.

Hand me down my walking cane
Oh hand me down my walking cane
hand me down my walking cane
I'm gonna catch that midnight train
all my sins are taken away, taken away

Will I not hear this echoing round the room again

How to get to the FRIENDSHIP ROWING CLUB from the Plough? If you follow Jim,s directions you,ll finish up at the Fisherlads Rowing Club. For the uninitiated there are two rowing clubs in Whitby in close proximity of each other.
The easiest way from the Plough to FRIENDSHIP is over the Bridge, turn left along Sandgate, right through the Market Place, left along the cobbled Church Street and where the road narrows left down New Way Ghaut. The Clubs address is FRIENDSHIP ROWING CLUB, NEW WAY GHAUT, WHITBY. If anyone is coming by car, the nearest car park is the Eastside Church Street Car Park . There is no charge for parking there between 7pm at night and 9am in the morning.

Great Venue the small bar at the Friendship Rowing Club with some great views of the harbour and is very nice and cosy. Great choice Mick and Angi!

I know how every one feels about the Plough but I doubt if it will do any harm to drink and play elsewhere. It maybe that the loss of earnings which during Folk Week will be enough to convince the powers that be to re instate Live Music in all Sam Smiths pubs.

Oh and they might put back the telly and the Juke box while they are at it. Lots of the regulars are upset about the loss of on tap entertainment. I'm sorry about this turn of events I have always appreciated Sam Smiths doing their own thing. Which in the past in Whitby has given a warm welcome and provided a great service to its local community.

The Whitby Folk Club moves on to a new venue that has lots of possibilities! I will be pleased to give it my support and I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the Friendship Rowing Clubs members and the committee for providing one of my favourite Folk Clubs with such a great Venue. I have always been made welcome as a guest at the Friendship and I can tell you that the Friendship certainly lives up to its name. THANK YOU

After 58 years of Whitby/Scarborough I long ago switched to auto-pilot, and I forget that I need to be very specific when giving directions. I'd never have made a policeman.

Some friends just been into Plough tonight and enquired about whats going to happen at Folk Week, there can be no organised music perfomed there, but surprise, surprise, if anyone goes in there, or in the Yard ad lib they will be allowed to play, sing whatever. It looks like some financial wizard has seen a bit of sense and managed to get it through to Humprey.
It looks like Malcolm Storey though wiil have to find another venue for Joe & Mo,s Sing-a-round and also all the workshops he normally holds there .
The first night at the Friendship went very well, Mick ran it as usually in his sort of unorganised way. I don,t know really why we had to move! The first night at the Friendship was a huge success, they opened up the club especially for us, the atmosphere was great, the beer good and reasonably priced, the company friendly and I loved it.

I doubt if that's official policy from Head Office. If a large crowd of people just turn up out of the blue and start playing music, though, there isn't a great deal a licensee can do, other than throw them all out again, which might be a bit impractical in that particular case.

Sounds like wanting the spice and the half penny to me. Is it a good idea for anyone to play in the Plough untill a change of policy comes from Sam Smiths? There are plenty of other Pubs in Whitby after all! Dose anyone else think that sending back the barrells of Real Ale from The Plough to the brewery after Folk Week is sending the right message to Sam Smiths Brewery? I do no matter how much I will miss the Plough Yard. It could be better to take our Money and Drink and play where we will be welcome all year don't you think?

I'm sorry that the upstairs room appears to be at risk, but my point would be that it is a private room and if seen to be hired then virtually anything should be permitted

Ithink seaside landlord with proven track records in terms of beer sales and little or no trouble would/should have a case with the brewery regardless of 'policy'

We get rid of smoking, in my view rightly ~+ now we get rid of 'live' music, to what aim; it's not as if the folk music causes excessive music from loud pa's, really it does seem that CEOs of large companies live in cloud cuckoo land, where do they think shareholders derive their profit from, I hate to say it but they (CEOs +board have lost sight of the ball.

Raggytash If you look you will find that I have made no Mention of Gill and Denise who as you rightly say have made everyone welcome at the Plough. It would however be Gill and Denise who's lively hoods would be put at risk if the Orders from Sam Smiths were ignored and they allowed live music to continue in the Plough.

One of the stories I was told was that Sam Smiths have taken over a Chain of Pubs in the South. Humphrey was visiting one of these pubs and there was a live Rock Band playing. The pub was also selling Alco-pops, which are not allowed in any Sam Smiths houses. The Manager was sacked on the spot and Humphrey himself stood in behind the bar until a relief manager could be found.

Yes we could all have a mass protest by heading for the plough and singing and playing. But why should we wish to embarrass Gill and Denise. All I'm suggesting is that especially during Folk Week it might be a good idea to support all the other pubs in Whitby who welcome live Music all year. We would only be complying with the wishes of the Brewery after all. However this is only a suggestion there may be other ways round the Music Ban. We need clarification for example would Banjo and Boron players be allowed? Come on how many other Pubs are they in Whitby? How long will it take us to drink them dry?

was the manager sacked for selling alcopops (how accounted for) or for defying non music in Sam's pubs?

Who is Humphrew, and if as up front as you say he is invite the
bod CEO whoever, who is responsible to his shareholders, to come to The Plough to see for himself!!

I'm losing patience

Get shut of the CEO!

I'm sure my portfolio manager has some of Sam's share
I'm saying no more, you all know how volatile are share values

George, you old Teddy Bear, don't get your knickers in a twist, we're both on the same side on this. Like you I think the Plough to many people IS Whitby Folk Festival and Gil & Denise need whatever support we can give them, even if that means this year drinking somewhere else. As Ray and others have said hit the brewery where it hurts in the bank balance, sadly though that too will affect Gil & Denise and all the other licensees who let us use their premises, so a concerted approach directly to Humphrey Smith may be the order of the day and perhaps a similar concerted approach to his fellow directors may be considered, they are the people who can put DIRECT pressure upon him to reconsider this matter, and in the final analysis are the one's who could vote him off the board for, what some would consider, wilful mismanagement

I hear that Mr Smith blew most of his gaskets once he started to get some adverse publicity. There is probably quite a lot more coming his way including national coverage in the near future which will at least start with mentioning Sam Smiths actions. Several managers are currently leaving (partly as a result of this and more are rumoured to be on the way) and they are still waiting a response from him to their concerns about changes which were raised nearly two months ago. Takings are down in quite a number of pubs - definitely in the one we used to use. I have been told that PRS and Smiths are supposed to be talking so who knows?

Can't see any harm in writing and letting him know your feelings, I know a lot of other people have. I would guess that they reckon that things will just blow over and the world go back to normal so it's important to keep up the pressure.

Has anyone else had a reply by the way? They seem to be getting increasingly tight-lipped.

I've haven't got my knickers in a twist Raggytash. I just wanted to make it clear that I for one have appreciated Gill and Denise's hospitality. The idea of live music being banned in any pub let alone a chain of pubs. Is abhorrent to me and a to all who get a great deal of enjoyment from it.

I haven't enjoyed a pint of Theakstons since the Breweries behaviour at Leeds Folk Festival in 1982. I have enjoyed my visits to the Plough and the Jolly Sailor in Whitby and to Nellie's in Beverly. We are all on the same side as usual and if we are arguing which we are not! It's about how best to protest about the Brewery's Policy. I just think that not spending money in Sam Smiths pubs until a change of its latest Live Music Policy could be the way to go. We would only be complying with the wishes of the Brewery and the Law after all. Until Sam Smiths decided to apply for the licences that they require to enable them to permit Live Music in on and around the licensed premise's. Come on I'll start you off name all the Pubs in Whitby! First Inn Last Out
