Subject: Lyr Add: ARMSTRONG TOURIST REST HOME From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jan 05 - 06:24 PM Some time ago I was asking for the chords to this song by two Canadians, Alan Fraser and Daisy DeBolt from the early 1970's. I was too lazy to transcribe the lyrics from their record when I made my request. However, I've finally done that, at least I think I got all the words, and now maybe someone can help me with the chords if they're also familiar with the song. ARMSTRONG TOURIST REST HOME (By Alan Fraser © BMI as sung by Alan Fraser and Daisy DeBolt on FRASER & DEBOLT, Columbia 30381, circa 1970) The reason I get so upset when you talk disassuredly Is where on earth is it leading? The cowboys have trouble with reading, The mistletoe is leaving your head on my shoulder, My, my, my. Your love for me, is an overnight sensation; My love for you, is an overnight sensation too! Constance, what a name, you should have said Felicity, How did you hear I was hungry? That's nonsense, Marie, and you know it, The liquor has made you a little bit bolder, My, my, my. Your love for me, is an overnight sensation; My love for you, is an overnight sensation too! Now that the whole thing is over, Heaven knows what I'll do; I might try to get back to the clover, Or I might stay and play for you. Incense, velvet, simplicity, religion, Where on earth are you going? The cowboys are sprinkling mycelium; The mushrooms keep growing in every new boot print, My, my, my. Your love for me, is an overnight sensation; My love for you, is an overnight sensation too! This is probably the weirdest song I ever heard but it's also one that I don't ever expect to forget. Maybe you had to be there. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Hollowfox Date: 25 Apr 07 - 04:14 PM Um, Charley, I think this is Overnight Sensation. I heard Armstrong Tourist Rest Home when F&D toured on the Coffee House Circuit to my college in the late 60's or early 70's - just before their first album came out. I don't remember much of the lyrics, but "at the Armstrong Tourist Rest Home" was a phrase at the end of at least one verse, or perhaps it was the chorus. I was sorely dissapointed when the album only had the wierd vocalizations from the end of the song. I hope the lyrics turn up. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Phil Cooper Date: 25 Apr 07 - 05:57 PM I have the album, haven't listened to it for a long time. Yes, what a charming song. Sorry, don't have a firm enough grip on the tune to figure out chords. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Apr 07 - 10:26 PM Hollowfox- What you say for a title makes perfect sense except that track on the album is listed as "Armstrong Tourist Rest Home." "Overnight Sensation" would be a more logical title. Maybe they forgot to proof the track titles. Wouldn't surprise me. I always wondered at the title. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Apr 07 - 07:28 AM I Googled for "ARMSTRONG TOURIST REST HOME" (in quotes) and the only thing that came up, besides Mudcat, was this: "An ever-expanding collection of track lists for obscure LPs." It says it's on a 1969 album called "Arthur" by a person (or band?) named Arthur. There are several songs called OVERNIGHT SENSATION. Mickey Gilley recorded one by Robert Lee McDill. Tina Turner recorded one by Mark Knopfler. Barbara Mandrell recorded yet a different one. Dottie West recorded one. Several others whose names I don't recognize—probably rock bands—have recorded others. Aha! I found a Fraser & DeBolt web site where the title is given as ARMSTRONG TOUREST REST HOME. I hate bad spelling! But that's the way it appears on the album cover, apparently. The good news is: they have a playable sound file. (Apparently) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Apr 07 - 08:24 AM Jim- Good catch on the track title. I have two of their recordings, one a back-up just in case the other implodes. The track title is spelled "Armstrong TourEst Rest Home." The notes by John Gabree on the album don't explain why. I'd still love to have the chords decoded; there are more than three! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Apr 07 - 02:04 PM Charley: If the Fraser & DeBolt web site is correct, the title that corresponds to the lyrics you have posted is WALTZE (sic) OF THE TENNIS PLAYERS. I've played the sound file, and it definitely is a waltz, so I'm inclined to think the cuts are labeled correctly. In any case, the lyrics are quite enigmatic, and there is no clear connection between the lyrics and any title, so I can understand why someone would get confused. I have a couple of suggested corrections to your lyrics: "The reason I get so upset when you talk this assuredly" -and- "The mistletoe is leaving a head (or "ahead"?) on your shoulders" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Apr 07 - 05:42 PM Jim- "The Waltze of the Tennis Players" is another very weird but different song; it's the 2nd track on my album, so not easily confused with "Armstrong et al." "Them Dance Hall Girls" is another personal favorite as is "Gypsy Solitaire." You may be correct in your transcription. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: GUEST,RachmaninoffFriend Date: 11 Sep 09 - 07:20 PM Kaya Fraser, i believe is one of the daughters of the original band, sings a beautiful version of Waltz of the Tennis Players. Unfortunately, it's not on her album. :( |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: GUEST,Kaya Fraser Date: 14 Sep 09 - 02:37 AM Why, thank you, RachmaninoffFriend. It is a gem of a song. It may well be on the next album...stay tuned :) Kaya Fraser www.kayafraser.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: GUEST,Arachne Date: 19 Jan 10 - 12:02 PM I know this one! I was looking for the lyrics to this. My Dad knows this song. It's called "The Waltz of the Tennis Players", according to him. I know he still has the album somewhere, so I'll check when I'm back in the summer. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jan 10 - 01:33 PM I'm still looking for the chords to "Armstrong Tourest (sic) Rest Home. I would think that someone would have figured them out by now. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: GUEST,Chris Date: 10 Jul 11 - 01:42 PM I play it as a waltz in C...; C walkdown to Am-F-G, back to C. The bridge, "Now that the whole thing is over," is Em-F-C, and 'sing this song for you.....' ends in G. "The ivy [cocaine] is melting the head off my shoulders." "That's nonsense, for me, and you know it," |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Jack Campin Date: 10 Jul 11 - 08:52 PM On Spotify, "Armstrong Tourest Rest Home" is a short wordless piece that sounds a bit like Meredith Monk. The song you're talking about is on Spotify as "Waltz of the Tennis Players". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Jul 11 - 07:39 AM Chris- Thanks. I'll give those chords a try. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: /Chrd REQ-Armstrong Tourist Rest Home From: Jack Campin Date: 11 Jul 11 - 08:14 AM I just another version on Spotify - an album by George Elliott, "Child of the Moon" (2004) where the song Charley asked about in the first message is titled "Armstrong Tourest Rest Home". You would get some very odd looks doing that in any folk club I've been to. |
