Britain gave the world John Milton, William Shakespeare, Newtonian Physics and Common Law. We also gave it The East India Company, commercialised slavery, Sweeney Todd and Jack the Ripper. What about Germany? Gave the world Brecht, Schiller, Goethe, Einstein, Bach, Beethoven and Heinrich Heine. It also gave the world Kaiser Wilhelm II, Zyklon B gas and Adolf Hitler. I can't think of another country which has not produced good and bad on an equal scale. There is no reason to despise English because Jack the Ripper spoke it. It is also no reason to decry the German language because a neurotic little jerk like Hitler did.

I believe the Brits ended slavery and actively discouraged the slave trade (The Romans never got to that) way ahead of the Yanks.

I think it probable that without the US in the 20th century the Brits would not be speaking German, but they'd be using RSL (Russian as a Second Language).

(Any why not, Russian is a SWELL language with many many folk songs)

If you are Irish, then you know what was done in Chicago, and other US cities, to help save the music and language of our people. That is not to say that us Yanks were solely responsible, just as we weren't solely responsible (despite what some of my countrymen believe) for the victories in Europe during two World Wars. But in all three instances, the outcome would have been very different without our contributions. I find the attempts to denigrate the contributions of the US to the world we live in to be every bit as insulting as I find the attempts by xenophobic Yanks to take credit for every good thing that has happened in the world.
