UK Calton cases are fine - And the Canadian ones are OK IF you can actually get one

Beware of Calton Cases. Don't take my word - go to the better business bureau site and look at their rating. You risk losing your money! Many others have had issues. Nice case if you actually get it and it's the right size.

just seen a new sort of case in the new yamaha catalogue. I really fancy one of those new tiny yamaha csf guitars. has anybody played one or seen the case for it?

Hi Clinton,

Yes, I found a shop stocking Fort EPP cases, and there is one which takes the instrument, but only by shoe horning it in by slightly deforming the top end. The salesman strongly advised against it, saying that it would be extremely expensive to repair the broken neck after any end on impact.

Even Framus were unable to suggest an answer.

This saga could run and run.

Hang fire a mo Don - I have a gig bag at home that might just be the thing you're looking for - it's the most seriously padded gig bag I've ever seen/owned. I bought a 12 string on Ebay and the case was included. My main gripe with it is it's weight - I'd never consider carrying it any distance without strapping it on my back, but it seems to me it's built for back-packing.

I'll get details when I get home and re-post here if you're interested.

Oh I don't know Johnny, try schlepping a guitar around all day in a Calton or Hiscox and there won't be energy (or hands) left to play it. Backpacking it also frees the hands to do or to carry other things, and keeps the case up out of the way of crowds and impediments. Hardshells are great until you have to carry them any distance, in fact I often use a folding trolley when everything is in hardshells. Cases with built-in wheels don't always work well on uneven ground (or snow), much like dragging the case without wheels.

The older I get, the more I notice such things, via knees and shoulders, but to each his own.

Get the Hiscox. Never seen the point of gig-bags and the like, especially don't understand folks walking around wearing them like a rucksack - slip and fall and your guitar's history. Why put a good instrument in something that can only protct it against scratches but not save it in the event of a violent impact? If an instrument's worth playing it's worth protecting properly - that means a hard-shell case.

I'll say it again - get the Hiscox (or even better, a Calton).

I've got a Gator rigid foam case with straps, pockets, zipper closure, and sized for a dreadnought. My thought is that if they make one for a 12 string it might fit your elongated headstock. I've used this case many times for my oddball size guitars and simply packed in some laundry to take up the dead space.

Google Gator and you might find a site...I haven't looked yet.

Don, try a google search for Fort cases. They are made of polypropylene and fit my guild D55 which also has a long headstock.They are made by the Simon & Patrick group of Canadian Guitar makers. They weigh less than 2 pounds, have shoulder straps, and are so easy to carry that it's unbelievable. They are also very tough - Derek Brimstone saw mine at Bedworth festival and obtained one for himself and is delighted with it- he even flies with it (in an aeroplane of course!)
It's made an incredible difference to me - With my Legacy L10 the whole lot weighs about three and a half pounds.
I think they cost about 60 GBP.

Stefy got back to me to say their semi rigid won't fit, again by about 3/8 inch.

Guardian looks possible, though I'm waiting for confirmation on size, as that particular measurement seems to be of no interest except for my guitar. Thanks a bunch, Framus. And of course there's good old Customs & Excise to think about.

I have found that a Hiscox case will fit, but I'll need to save for a while, and it's a hard shell, with no shoulder strap, which is not quite what I was after.

All in all, I think I'll go for the best protected gig bag I can find (Ritter probably), but thanks again guys, this site has more than it's share of helpful people.

I think there would be sufficient space (just!) for the headstock in my Hiscox classical case but it would not be wide enough. The dreadnought or jumbo versions probably would be. Try the hiscox site for detailed dimensions.

Don T. Stefy do make an acoustic semi-rigid case as well as gig bags. I know...I have one for my classical! As I said, they are about £50. That link should lead you to a page with one or more on.

Guardian Cases . They make a hard foam type case that is excellent - like a cross between a gig bag and a regular hard case. I bought one and I love it. They have a couple of styles available and one of them might fit your guitar.

Thanks for that mooman. I tried their site, and it only features gig bags, which offer much less protection than a semi rigid case.

Bee-dubya-ell, I did try five high street stores, and they confined themselves to telling me "We don't stock one that size, and we don't know anyone who does". I can get a custom case at three times the price, but I can't afford that.

Anybody else able to suggest a solution?

A Italian company Stefy do a reasonably priced semirigid (hard shell outer, foam lined and reinforced, zip opening rather than hinges and catches, and with a shoulder strap). About £50-60 I think. Don't know the dimensions but they do several models.

You need to just take the guitar to a music store and get a human being (who is probably working on commission) to help you. If they don't have one that fits, they can possibly order one. It's not surprising that online retailers aren't willing to go the extra step. Whoever reads your inquiry message is just sitting in a cubicle working a computer. He's gonna get paid the same whether you buy anything or not.

Hi folks,

I am having problems getting a hard foam guitar case for my early sixties Framus Nashville acoustic guitar. The trouble is that Framus made it with a rather long headstock (8 inches nut to tip), and this makes it difficult to find a case with enough space between the nut support and the end. The difference in the Kinsman range is about 3/8 of an inch. I want hard foam, because I intend to backpack it.

Can anyone tell me of a reasonably priced (about £40 - £50) case that would fit the dimensions below.

Overall Length 41 3/4 inches
Lower bout width 15 3/4 inches
Upper bout width 11 1/2 inches
Body length 20 inches
Body Depth 4 inches throughout
Headstock from nut 8 inches.

I am having no joy in getting retailers to check size for me, and am waiting up to a week for e-mail enquiries to be answered. If you have a POD case, please let me know if it might fit, as I haven't had any response at all from the vendors of those. I'm beginning to think they don't want my money.
