Subject: old cowboy song with refrain
From: roro81@juno.com
Date: 29 Nov 98 - 03:23 PM

I am looking for an old song (at least 50 years old) with the refrain,"Bony Bones, I hear you calling, Bony Bones, where can you be? Bony Bones, I hear you calling, Bony Bones, come back to me." It is about a girl who saved the town or something from a band of rustlers.

I am still looking for the words to the "cowboy" song about a female sheriff or something that rescued the town from some "rustlers". It says,"Boney Bones, is what they call my sweetheart, Boney Bones the only name she had, Boney Bones, the girl who had no meat on, Boney Bones, the only name she had." Has anyone ever even heard of it? Thanks, Roro

frefresh - there was a Louis Prima song with that title, although I haven't found the lyrics. I wonder if that could be it.

One night while I was out with Boney,
A very light wind did hit the town,
In the morning in all the ruination
Boney Bones was nowhere to be found.

Boney Bones I kept on calling
Boney Bones where can you be
Boney Bones, the girl who had no meat on
Boney Bones come back to me.

I can't believe I remember such tripe!

Any idea of a source? Do you remember if there was more to the song?

I'm sure there was more to it, but that's all I recall right now.

Sounds like something from the twenties, so even I'm surprised that you remember it.

Some more lyrics, pieced together from sound samples:

Boney Bones is what they called my sweetheart. (Boney Bones)
Boney Bones, my darling she was called. (Boney Bones)
Boney Bones, because she had no meat on, (had no meat on)
Boney Bones was the only name she owned. (Boney Bones)

Now one night when I was courtin' Boney
Some rustlin' outlaws we did see.
That's when Boney jumped upon her pony
And scared those rustlers from the territory.

Boney Bones now became a hero, (Boney Bones)
Boney Bones, the hero of the town. (Boney Bones)
Boney Bones, the girl who had no meat on, (had no meat on)
Boney Bones....

[From Louis Prima and Keely Smith, "Breaking It Up!" Columbia/Legacy CD 65259, 1998.]

I remember hearing it on the radio, but it was long ago, so I don't remember who did it. It was a steam powered radio.

I remember this from the fall of 1952, in my memory it was sung by Frank Sinatra, but I've never been able to find it.

BONEY BONES
(as sung by Louis Prima)

(Chorus)
Boney Bones, that's what they call my sweetheart
Boney Bones, the only name she owned
They called her Boney because she had no meat on
Boney Bones, the skinniest girl around

Now one night when I was courtin' Boney
Some thievin' rustlers we did see
That's when Boney jumped upon her pony
And scared those rustlers from the territory

(Chorus)

Now the mayor of the city soon decided
A celebration there would be
Boney Bones would now become a hero
Boney Bones The hero of the town

(Chorus)

Now one night before the celebration
A big ol' twister hit the town
And in the morning throughout the ruinition
Boney Bones was nowhere to be found

Boney Bones, Where are you hiding
Boney Bones, Where can you be?
Boney Bones, I keep on calling
Will you please come back and marry me
(chorus)

I just listened to this recording on Spotify, and these are the words I heard. (I wonder where the above lyrics came from?)

BONEY BONES
As sung by Louis Prima on "Breaking It Up" (1953)

Boney Bones is what they called my sweetheart.
Boney Bones, my darling she was called.
Boney Bones, because she had no meat on,
Boney Bones, was the only name she owned.

Now one night while I was courtin' Boney,
Some rustling outlaws we did see.
That's when Boney jumped upon her pony
And scared those rustlers from the territory.

Boney Bones now became a hero,
Boney Bones, the hero of the town,
Boney Bones, the girl who had not meat on,
Boney Bones, the bravest girl around.

Now the mayor of the city then decided
That he'd declare a holiday.
He told the people they were all invited
To make that day a place so joyous and gay.

Now the night before the celebration,
A very light wind did hit the town.
In the morning with all the ruination,
Boney Bones was nowhere to be found.

"Boney Bones!" I kept on calling.
"Boney Bones, where can you be?"
Boney Bones, she had meat on.
"Boney Bones, come back to me!"

[These lines don't quite make sense. If the wind was "very light," why was there "ruination"? But that's what he sang, I swear.]

I too have always remembered the cleverness of the bigger the figure on one side of a 45 record and boney boney bones on reverse. Both tunes/lyrics were catchy and popped into my mind fr time to time in the 60 yrs since we used to play that record in the 50s.
