Marley was a talented singer-songwriter and his band, The Wailers, were excellent musicians; but I cannot help thinking he is hopelessly over-rated. He had nothing of interest to say - about Jamaica, about being black, or about slavery. Check his songs: he just came out with the same old nonsense that everybody else in Jamiaca was spouting about at the time. Read his interviews he gave when alive - about as insightful and articulate as a drunken bar-room bore. He rarely made sense. He wrote and recorded some lovely songs, but that is the most you can say about him. History has been far too kind to Bob Marley. |
