Here is one I learned through a friend. I'll put the lyrics here and then follow with a link that also features the tune. As I learned it, it is generally sung while bouncing a child on one's knee. When arriving at the final "plumps" you suddenly straighten out your leg while holding tightly to the child, giving them a sensation of falling.

    Hoppa, hoppa Reiter

Hoppa, hoppa Reiter,
Wenn er fällt, dann schreit er!
Fällt er in den Graben,
Fressen ihn die Raben
Fällt er in den Sumpf,
Macht der Reiter plumps!

Now, this is as much as I learned. The verse was repeated to make the melody work, I believe. My poor memory was helped by the inimitable, Joe Offer. Here are the lyrics given at the wonderful,
http://ingeb.org/

Hoppa, hoppa Reiter,
Fällt er hin so schreit er,
Fällt er von dem Pferde,
Liegt er auf der Erde,
Fällt er in das grüne Gras,
Macht er sich sein Pelzchen naß,
Fällt er in den Sumpf,
Macht der Reiter plumps!

Melody, etc. here.

I was delighted to see "Struwwelpeter" in Masato Sakurai's link, but alas, it seems not to have been set to music.

How about "Von den blauen Bergen kommen Wir"?
At least everyone knows the tune "She'll be coming round the mountain."
I've used this with different kindergarten groups in Germany and they always have verses of their own. Zum Beispiel

Von den Blauen Bergen kommen Wir!
Unser Lehrer ist genau so dumm wie wir.
Mit der Brille auf der Nase
Seht aus wie ein Osterhase
Von den Blauen Bergen kommen Wir!

Excuse me if the spelling is a bit rusty.

Eddie

I had a group of little kids singing and dancing "The Farmer in the Dell" - for a German festival out here. True-Love translated it into German for me. Worked quite well.
I also devised a simple dance to "Ach du lieber Augustin" using words True-Love learned from his German father.

Ach du lieber Augustin
Augustin, Augustin
Ach du lieber Augustin
Limburger cheese

And sausage and weiners
And weiners and sausage
Ach du lieber Augustin
Limburger cheese.

Cheers, Joy

The "Kuckuck" (cuckoo) actually was not a childrens song in the beginning, but a political song. The cuckoo symbolized the wish for freedom which can`t be shot = suppressed for long...

Thanks so much - it was Auf einem Baum ein Kuckuck. The other links were all really helpful too - loads of inspiration for kindergarten!

Thanks again.

My little boy's kindergarten just had their ofsted exam and were told that they should be singing songs in foreign languages. I said I was quite happy to help with this (my mother was Austrian). I remember Hanschen Klein and have just found the words and tune for the cat ran in the snow, but I was wondering what other short simple songs people might suggest. Ideally I'd love it if I could track down the one other song I can remember my mother singing to me. I can remember the tune vividly (not much help I know!) but it was a song where you bounced the child on your knee to the chorus, which went something along the lines of "zim zala dim zam da zala doo zala dim." The rhythm of the tune went something like "Daa da da da da da-a da (zim zala dim zam da zala doo zala dim), daa da da da da da-a da da."

Hope someone can help me with that and thanks very much in advance.

Sophie
