Subject: What's the meaning of TD? From: AndreasW Date: 30 Nov 98 - 07:36 AM Can you please help me? In the song "My Uncle's In The Dáil" there is an abbreviation TD. What does it mean? I think it is "Member of Parliament", more specially "Member of Irish House of Representatives" So I think the D stands for Dáil (Éirean) But what does the T stand for? I searched The Irish Constitution but without luck, there's no name for the members of parliament. Thanks in advance, Andreas |

Subject: RE: What's the meaning of TD? From: MARION DENNERLY Date: 30 Nov 98 - 11:43 AM T STANDS FOR TEACHTA WHICH IS THE IRISH FOR HOUSE D DOES STAND FOR DAIL. WHICH BASICALLY MEANS THE HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT. |
Subject: RE: What's the meaning of TD? From: Martin Ryan. Date: 30 Nov 98 - 05:06 PM Marion "Teach" is the word for "house". "Teachta", however, is a deputy or delegate. "Dail", in general is a meeting or assembly. "Dail Eireann" is "Irelands Parliament". So TD is equivalent to MP or Member of Parliament.

Subject: RE: What's the meaning of TD? From: annraoi@opreith.freeserve.co.uk Date: 30 Nov 98 - 08:25 PM Martin is essentially correct. "Teachta" is the equivalent of "representative" and "Dála" is the Genitive Singular of the word "dáil" meaning an assembly or gathering. Thus the title "TD" = Teachta Dála = Member of Parliament ( in English terms). The folk etymology of "teachta" having something to do with "house" is totally erroneous. If anything, it shares a common provenance with the Verbal Noun form of the Verb "Tig / Tag" meaning "come" e.g. bearing a message, as in the word "teachtaire" = a messenger; "teachtaireacht" = a message. Hope this is of some assistance. HOP |

Subject: RE: What's the meaning of TD? From: mm Date: 01 Dec 98 - 06:32 PM TD stands for Teachtaire Da/ile, literally messenger of the Dail or representative of the Dail. The Dail is the lower house of the Oireachtas (parliament) in Ireland; the Seanad is the upper house, and a member of the Seanad is called a Seanado/ir. (in both cases I've used a forward slash after a letter to represent a si/ne fada or a variant of the acute accent used to change the pronunciation of a vowel in I |
Subject: RE: What's the meaning of TD? From: Pete M Date: 01 Dec 98 - 07:14 PM You're all wrong, it doesn't stand for anything, TD is a model of MG sports car! On second thoughts - it could stand for Tank destroyer if you are into WW2 nomenclature. Tanks for the memories - Pete M |
