Hi Mudcatters,

Looking for lyrics to what I assume is a not widely known song. I'm not sure of the title, but I know the first line is " I used to be a ladies man, but that's all over now..."
It was sung by Pat Keane from Kinvara. Any help appreciated.. Thanks

According to Kinvara Publications, Caoilte Breatnach has written a book "Come Here I Want You" which "details the life, times and stories of the late Pat Keane."

Perhaps you could contact the publisher or author.

Ha! I had emailed Caoilte last night to check on this. I may well see him over the weekend and will ask.

Caoilte has made two attempts to email the lyrics - both vanished mysteriously en route. We'll try again.

Hi Martin
They say that its a small world, but its much tinier than that. I didn't know that you know Caoilte. Caoilte is a very good friend of mine, we go a long way back, it was he that recommended Inis Meáin to me, 25 years ago. Tell him I was asking for him, tell him to get himself and Petra to the Góilín and give us a rendition of the Patriot's Game. Hope to see yourself and Josephine there soon also.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE SIX GIRLS (Pat Keane)
From: GUEST,Martin Ryan

Here's the song as supplied by Caoilte Breathnach:

The Six Girls       (Pat Keane)

                                     1.
'Sure, I used to be the ladies' man but that's all over now
For courting six girls all at once didn't suit me anyhow
My mother said 'twas naughty sure I laughed at her advice
Although I knew 'twas naughty yet,   I thought it very nice.

                                     2.
On Monday I met Mary Anne, on Tuesday Mary Jane,
On Wednesday charming Miss Mc Gann, on Thursday Kitty Payne
On Friday Polly Hopkins, on Saturday Miss Wall
And Sunday night I stayed inside for fear I'd meet them all.

                                     3.
I wrote a letter to Mary Anne, addressed to Mary Jane
Signed it charming Miss McGann in care of Kitty Payne
To give to Polly Hopkins in care of one Miss Wall
And that was how they found me out and made me pay for all.

                                     4.
Oh I never will forget the night I met those blessed six
Those darlings cried "It's now you'll pay for all your little tricks"
Mary Anne she pulled me hair and Mary Jane me coat
and Miss McGann she got a man that caught me by the throat.

                                     5.
Kitty Payne she scratched me face till it ran red with blood
And dirty Polly Hopkins, she covered me with mud
And now to make the job complete that rascal one Miss Wall
Oh, she banged me hat till it was flat against the garden Wall.

                                     6.
So on Monday I met Mary Anne, on Tuesday Mary Jane,
On Wednesday charming Miss Mc Gann, on Thursday Kitty Payne
On Friday Polly Hopkins, on Saturday Miss Wall
And 'tis now I'm right when either night, I haven't one at all!

Caoilte cites the tune as "The Pride of Pimlico etc." which, to me anyway, means "The Flower of Sweet Strabane" air.

I had the great joy of knowing Pat Keane and I also have an idea of how the Flower of Sweet Strabane sounds. I wouldn't think there are any similarities in the two songs the way it was sung by Pat. I could sing it for you over the telephone if you like....unfortunately that's as far as my technical experience goes. Martin, if you go to Kinvara please give everyone my kind regards...its been my gracious home away from home for the past decade and a half. Just say hi from Eileen the yank.
All the best

Eileen

I've just moved to live within two miles of Kinvara. Eat your heart out!

I'll check the air with Caoilte. Certainly, it fits with The Flower of Sweet Strabane - but then, so do lots of songs!

I'm in Monkstown,Co.Dublin but plan a trip before the 2nd week of March..to Kinvara....perhaps you could meet me for a session of music and drinking at Winkle's? Then you can hear the song properly as Pat would have done it. Actually, the daughter of the house of Winkle's does an absolutely fabulous version of this song, having been brought up in Pat's kind presence. Her name is Sinead. She's asked for the song often, so may be hesitant, but explain to her that it is in the interest of tradition that she share with others. Tell her "auntie eileen" said so! (ps...i'm eating out my heart!love Kinvara, always haave)

First Sunday of the month, Caoilte and some others run a singing session in Flatley's. We plan to investigate the instrumental/mixed sessions systematically over the next few weeks!

The "Flower of Sweet Strabane" suggestion was off-target! I think it's just that I've heard the Pride of Pimlico to that air on occasion.

The Punters from Newfoundland include this song on their Songs for a Sunday Morning album, as "Ladies Man".
