Great to see Hamish so fondly remembered and I'm sure his Legend will endure. I first heard before and after in about 1974 when I was seven and loved his sense of humour. I hadn't heard the coppers song since then and still remembered the words when I dug it out recently!

A true Scottish Legend

I'm sure I posted this on a thread some time back but.... my favourite was a song about a man who collected bottles of whisky and his wife made him give up his hobby which he duly did by 'tasting each one' I have been tryingto get a copy of it for ages but to no avail. Can anyone tell me what the tune is though, I've been told it's a reel of some sort.

'Took the cork from the first bottle, had a little drink....
kissed the bottle tenderly & poured it down the sink....'

aye thaaank yew

On that Billy Connolly programme about Bert Jansch, theres a lovely section showing Hamish at the howff folk club picking solid gone (whitehouse blues) with Archie Fisher. He was damn good.

my favourite was that Blind lemon Jefferson thing Matchbox Blues. Iused to try and try to play that like Hamish. Still can't. i never announced myself to him or told him how much I appreciated his performances, and I'm really sorry I didn't now.

I've got to admit Black is the Colour never made an impression on me til I heard Christy Moore do it. I like it better without all the blues phrases. i must have heard Joan Baez play it as well without it really registering.

Hamish stayed with my (now) Partner, Paul Lawler in 1983, in Darwin, (Northern Territory of Oz). After 12,000 beers (- that's each!) Hamish said (in accents strong!!):
"Yuh know Paul, I want to leave my body to Science - But! I don't want them to find ANYthing of any use!!!"

Cheers! R-J

christy moore tells a nice story (on a live bbc concert) of the time as a young musician in the sixties, he met hamish imlach in a club in montrose street(?) glasgow, and afterwards hamish taught him black is the colour.
on a live recording in norway he welcomes the "women of hamish imlach" and sings black is the colour

It was Hamish's first album that introduced me to folk music. I only saw him play live a couple of times, the latter occasion followed by a mammoth curry blow out and quite a few drinks. He was funny, charming and an all round (no pun intended) good man. Sadly missed by me.
His versions of Black is the Cour and Foggy Dew are still amongst my favourite ever songs.

Sadly missed but fondly remembered

LL

Another true? story.
Archie Fisher was driving a group of singers, including Hamish,to a gig somewhere north of Loch Lomond and Hamish was sleeping in the back of the van. He wakened up and asked "where are we?" to be told "just passing Luss Hotel" to which Hamish responded WHY?

His Black is the Colour is still the best version.
Keep singing big man.

The underpants story also mutated into the soiled pair that were buried in a garden area of a Hotel during a midnight session in Germany, only to be presented by a eager to please Labrador as Hamish was having breakfast that morning! As the great man said "What is good health? It's the slowest way of dying!"

Well they say that he died with a spliff in one hand, and a whisky in the other, if that's not going gladly into that good night I don't know what is. I remember when his girls were young and his flat in Motherwell was showing the effects of young children, he just said 'we'll buy new furniture when the kids grow up'. Pragmatism personified, Hamish I miss you, and wish there were more left like you.

Thanks Phil for reminding us. It took me some years to appreciate that he was a warm-hearted, intelligent and very sensitive guy underneath, and very much a victim of his need to be loved.

He once did two nights running at our club in Germany, with Iain MacKintosh. To make a change they did completely separate sets the second night, and Hamish launched into an hour of purest blues. Afterwards we all urged him to do blues more often, but he wouldn't - he was afraid his audiences wouldn't like it!

As to the train story above - he himself admitted it had happened to a friend and he'd pinched it 'cause he realised how well he could use it.

And then there's the fact that through him I met ace musician Kate Kramer (the third party on 'More and Merrier') who has become one of my closest friends over the years. We often talk about Hamish.

RIP, Hamish, wherever you are now.

I always thought of Hamish as a big rumbustuous singer, as much a comic and entertainer as a singer, until I heard him sing "Black is the Colour" live and was just overwhelmed by his artistry and sensitivity. At my local club, The Star in Glasgow, that is still regarded as "Hamish's song" and it's agreed that he was the finest interpreter of that by those of up lucky enough to have heard him sing.
Happy birthday Hamish

Hamish's version of McPherson's Lament is the best I have ever heard. Raw and as authentic as it comes. He is still missed.

Used to book Hamish for the Alba Club in Dunoon in the late 60s.

He was in his prime then, his version of "black is the colour" was my favourite.

People call him a "larger than life character". A lot of my friends from that era were of the same mould, none of them are alive today, all fell victim to their lifestyle..."they gave us their hearts, but we wanted their souls "..Ake

Yes indeed, he was a very neat picker, and very knowledgeable. South of the border you don't hear a lot of the songs he used to sing nowadays. He was just so natural, you never suspected he was trying to mark out folk music for an elect few. a great communicater of folk tradition, you really felt that he wanted everybody in on the secret of how great this music is.

He actually stayed with me when he did a couple of gigs in Ullapool.
A great and sensetive guy; Larger than life in every way so I think a "Hamish" story is due.

ALLEGEDELY, he was, after a gig in Germany in bed with one of his fans. After the initial frenzy, he said to the young girl, "Here take one of these pills". She said, "Will this make more randy" He said, "No they are bloody sleeping pills!"
Then there is the other story of Hamish, when after a gig in Edinburgh, he had had far too much to drink and woke up in the morning and found that in the toilet he had soiled his underpants and jeans. He left the apartment and went into a shop in Princess Street and quickly demanded a pair 40 denims. He got the bag and got the train to Falkirk, Once in the train, he went to the loo and removed the soiled jeans, threw them out the wee window and opened the bag --- only to find a size 40 denim waistcote.
Don't know if they are true but I'm sure that many like it are - a great man!

Andy

He was a good bloke, a fine singer and he was bloody funny. There is a song about him by Pat Cooksey, who many Mudcatters will know.
My favourite line from Hamish Immlach was:
"What is good health anyway? It's just the slowest possible way of dying".
