When I first came to Mudcat in Sept 2004 I hardly ever visited the BS section. But now the titles of BS threads are the first ones I scan.

One reason I would suggest venturing into the BS threads is that it's a good way to learn more about interests, political positions, personalities of 'regular' posters on Mudcat.

Of course when you are new and you risk it and jump into an onging BS threads, you might make mistakes like I've done.. Like the time I chided another poster for thinking that a persona created by a 'Catter was real and was facing time in the slammer for public drunkenness...

I guess I've lived that mistake down...

Two more reasons for visiting the BS section: many of the threads are thought provoking and some of them are downright fun!!

There's no denying that you can also learn something in the Music section, but if the BS section wasn't here, I bet Mudcat would have less traffic-and that's not good for an online community.

PS, another great tool here is Trace-- I do have a few BS threads traced onto my personal page so I can focus on them when I think I may have a reflection to share. Or a Thread Name Game entry! :~)

Found and indexed a lot of spirituals recently, long overdue-- despite being ill myself and taking care of a worse-off husband!

Good old music!

Another lovely day in the clouds-- got my CD burner replaced and a CD made to thank Harpgirl for a song she shared with me in the snail world.... and then dove into Unanswered Requests. Have found one to Answer and a few more to dig around for. Made a Shaker MIDI and have a few of those to send off soon to post in Mudcat MIDIs. Merrily we roll along, good night ladies!

~S~

Postcard from the Music Section:

Wow, what a great day Up Here! A LONG-sought song request fulfilled and a new friend made who shares some of the memories.... A new song request fulfilled WITH ABC.... A couple of tables of contents posted from two songbooks I am really enjoying.... Several new songs learned (mined from old threads), AND a start on an index-thread of posted Shaker music. Also I found the digital camera finally, so I can start on the pix to post of the Mudcat Dorm. Wotta Mudcat!

Indeed, akenaton, Susan is a bit too theatrically touchy about "the religion thing".

Hey, BWL,

I betcha that if Silverstien or Lennon had ever gotten hooked on "mudcatting" they'd have never written songs, prose, or poetry beyond the "pages" of mudcat! Imagine. :^D

Susan is taking her ball and going to play by herself for a while,
untill the bad boys stop asking embarrassing questions.

I usually like Sues posts, and find her fair and forthright, but on this occasion I think shes being a bit "theatrical"   Ake

Going to miss your input, wisdom and humour, Susan. Of course, I monitor all the threads, so I'll probably "see you there". Anyway, bon voyage and don't forget to write... oops, that's why you're leaving.

Joking! That's one reason, though. :)

Music threads? Oh! You mean those things up top that you have to bybass to get down here to BS-land? The place where people go on endlessly about how many different versions of "Insert Name of Traditional Folksong Here" there are and which one's better than what other one?

Personally, I find it just as beneficial to my musical side to spend time down here making feeble attempts at sharpening my meager writing skills. John Lennon and Shel Silverstein didn't just write songs did they?

Nuttin' wrong wi' takin' a wee break from the BS side. Despite the BS prefix, the discussion side of the forum was always about the things that inspire music, or passionate beliefs, whatever. There are some of us that think that this is just as important to a folk/blues musician as the "dots".

I come to this site because music is discussed in the context of life, and vice versa. I like it like that. :)

You could of course just decide not to open them and encourage others not to. And to confine any personal comments to Personal Messages and encourage others to do this - or would that be too easy?

Some of us would argue that we do already have all the tools we need. I have a wonderful tool........

Didja know you can reset your membership options to make it painlessly easy to take a break from the BS side of Mudcat? Yes, we have wonderful tools here.

Just look at the options in Membership settings (click the MEMBERSHIP link in the topmost page banner):

BS filter Yes/No
If "Yes," filters threads designated "BS/non-music" out of Threads listing [you don't see them at all].

Mix Music & Non-music Yes/No
If "Yes," mixes music and non-music threads in the Threads listing [you see BS threads, but they are mixed into music threads that might capture your interest].

Hoping to have a wonderful time and to see you there,

~Susan
