Subject: Add: GOD'S BLESSING
From: wysiwyg
Date: 12 Feb 05 - 02:58 PM

The form of this is ABB, ABB or AABB, AABB, with two verses in whichever pattern is chosen.

~Susan

=============================================================

GOD'S BLESSING
This version from the 1884 hymnal "Shaker Music, Original Inspirational Hymns and Songs," is still in use today among the Shakers at Sabbathday Lake, Maine. The tune also appears in a slightly different version in the 1908 Hymnal of the Canterbury Shakers. Learned from the singing of Debra Spencer on Gourd Music CD VERDANT GROVES. This version adapted, edited, and arranged (C) 2005 for The Good News-Goodtime Band by Susan O. Hinton.

A Part:
1. As the dew of the morning,
Or as bright rivers roll;
So, so does God's blessing
Flow into my soul.

B Part:
I'll walk in His presence
As one greatly blessed;
On whose soul the love of
His work is impressed.

2. As the dawn of the morning,
Or a heavenly ray;
His glorious brightness
Illumines my way.

I'll sing of His favor,
I'll merit His love;
By honest endeavor
My loyalty prove.

The form is AABB, AABB, although it could certainly be done as ABABAB.

====================================================

GLORIES IMMORTAL
Originated in 1858. It was so popular that Sister Marguerite Frost,
a member of the Canterbury, NH Shaker community until her death in 1971, remembered it. Learned from the singing of Debra Spencer on Gourd Music CD VERDANT GROVES. This version adapted, edited, and arranged (C) 2005 for The Good News-Goodtime Band by Susan O. Hinton.

A Part:
The heavens are with us, I know.
Rich treasures like rivers do flow.
I feel all that's earthly is passing away
And I'm tasting of glories immortal.

B Part:
Bright angels around us do hover.
With healing our wounds they would cover.
And they would waft, waft, waft our spirits from toil and vexation
To live in their union forever.

THE SPIRIT IS CALLING (AKA Prayer Universal)
From the Canterbury Shaker Community, ca. 1890. Learned from the singing of Debra Spencer on Gourd Music CD VERDANT GROVES. This version adapted, edited, and arranged (C) 2005 for The Good News-Goodtime Band by Susan O. Hinton.

1. The Spirit is calling-- earnestly calling;
O Zion, unfold in deep prayer;
O pray for the fathers, the sisters and brothers,
O pray for the whole household;
O pray for the mothers. Remember all others;
O pray for the whole, whole world.

2. O, Spirit most holy-- earnestly calling,
So tenderly pleading for all!
In prayerful devotion, we bow at Thy bidding
To ask Thy rich mercies may fall...
Till household and nation shall see Thy salvation,
Thy pow'r reach the whole, whole world.
