The next time I am on Mudcat, it will be from Cherry Hill, NJ. In order to vest my health insurance benefits within my pension, I have taken a job there. The good news is that I will be very close to Mudcat Central, as well as Washington DC/Baltimore, Philadelphia, not far from NYC, and a manageable distance to Folk Legacy. The bad news is that I will have to live away from my family for about 2 to 3 years with monthly visits home. Fortunately I have a very strong family and we will make our way through this just fine.

So with any luck, I will see the back east Mudcatters at NEFFA, Old Songs, and maybe Mystic. I am looking forward to performing in the area and calling on old friends with a spare bedroom.

Anyone who badmouths NJ knows nothing about the state. It's great here. South Jersey has lots of state parks and forests and is really very scenic, and you don't have to travel very far from Cherry Hill to get out of the suburbs and into the country. You'll like it here.

The separation will be tough, but it should go by fast, esp. if you all keep busy.:-) We did a year of Rog living in NH while we were in CT. He came home most weekends. Now that I have health insurance, again, I think I'd do the same in your situation.

It's not so bad, Mick. Well, actually, some of it is, but there really is lots to love near there. Couldn't you talk them into coming along for the ride?

That's my old stomping grounds. I'll make you a list of things not to miss (including some of the nicest beaches in the US). You're minutes from Philadelphia, my favorite city on the planet. To date.

And a visit is MUCH more likely now, as I still have family there.

Let me contradict Martin and let you know that you can live the rest of your life without visiting Wrightstown, and you won't be missing anything.

The beaches at the Jersey Shore, on the other hand (and as observed by Dani) are the greatest. I grew up spending summers along the more northern streches of the shore (Monmouth & Ocean counties), and erosion has shrunk the beaches along there. But further south (closer to where you're moving), the sand from further north has been deposited and the beaches are wider than ever. Check out Wildwood.

On the boardwalks along the central section of the Shore (e.g., Seaside Hieghts), you can enjoy the best of both worlds: New York style pizza and Philly cheese steaks!

You do not go to the beach, you go "down the shore."

You will never again have to pump your own gas, and even with full service prices are lower than in surrounding states.

There are two things it is hard to get at a Jersey diner; a bad breackfast or a good dinner.

You will always be close to a shopping mall.

You will quickly learn the definition of "jughandle."

The Sandy Hook area beaches are great too. (where I used to live)
The beach clubs actually put palm trees in the sand in the summer. Feels just like San Diego, in the summer, for about three months.

BTW, our security guards could REALLY use a union out here. The pay is lousy and the benefits are laughable. (no dental!!) There are some dangerous positions too, where you can get hurt. They only pay time and a half on major holidays. They can change your hours or your site anytime they choose and if you don't like it, leave. All for starting at $8.50 - $9.00 per hour. Hardly a living wage out here where the cost of living is high. The raises are few, small and far between.

I just got out of that mess to join the San Diego Trolley. Very excited. Honey is still in there though.

I wish there was a way to bring your family down with you. The folk scene will keep you busy though. I hope the time goes quickly by.

As someone pointed out above--you'll be able to get to at least ten different shopping malls without going up a hill--Haddonfield is the home of the "Halloween" movies--Cherry Hill is know as "The California of New Jersey", and has it's very own branch of the Mafia! You'll be just a hop, skip and a jump from Trenton and Mercer County, where New Jersey History turns into world history--being, among other things, the site of the Lindbergh kidnapping, the War of the Worlds scare, the notorious murder of Megan Kanga(of the Megan Laws)--

It figures big in aviation history, being home to Lindbergh, as well as the home of the Hindenburg Disaster, and, deep in Pine Barrens, is the final resting place of Mexican aviator Emilio Carranza, who crashed there on a goodwill flight from New York to Mexico City, in 1928--see Carranza Memorial Page

--And another famous transportation disaster, the Wreck of the Nelly Bly, took place there in 1901--

The Pine Barrens   are worth moving to New Jersey for--being a huge wilderness complete with its own folk music, as well as blueberries , cranberries, tidal basins, the sinister and terrifying Jersey Devil, and an aquifer filled with trillions of gallons of the purest drinking water on the planet--

Of course--people make fun of New Jersey, but there is a lot more to do there than in Michigan--

The Carranza Memorial is probably the quietest place on the east coast. I take the 100 mile trip from my home to just sit there and enjoy the peace and quiet.

If you're a country music fan, try Albert Music Hall in Waretown, just about due east from Cherry Hill near the shore. From 7:30 to 10:30 every Saturday night, local bluegrass, country and old-time bands perform, usually 6 bands each show, and it only costs about 5 bucks. (My band performs there on the first Saturday of each month).

Amos, my remarks weren't directed towards you specifically, but it's hard to tell when people are kidding. I get kind of defensive about the most maligned state in the country.

I always heard and said "down the Shore," of course, but we did live north of the shore so we went "down" the Garden State Parkway to get there. I wasn't sure whether South Jerseyans use the same expression for their shorebound trips due east or ENE.

If you're interested in Revolutionary War history, most of the conflict took place in NJ, with Washington leading his troops back and forth between New York and Valley Forge over a period of several years. The state has a great system of historical sites; I would hope they're still maintained as well as when I was a youngster and "collected" visits to as many as possible.

I'm glad to have come from New Jersey, and I'm just as glad to live in New Orleans now. (I never intend to lift another snowshovel for the rest of my life!) But NJ certainly takes a bad rap; if you're going to live in the North, you could certainly do worse.

It's convenient to the great cities of New York and Phildelphia without the expense and hassle of living within the city limits, and even though there is a high concentration of population and industry across the center of the state, there are lovely scenic and rural areas to the northwest and southeast. Also, the schools are generally quite good (hint: you could move your kids with you!).

One more bit of aviation history: the first US airmail flight was from Hadley Airport in South Plainfield (2-3 miles from my Mom's house) to Dayton, Ohio. That was before my time, but I do remember Hadley, the site of my first plane ride sometime in the mid-1950s, a short up-and-down hop in a Piper Cub. Back then, it was surrounded by farmland; today, it's been paved over and replaced by a shopping mall and a cloverleaf ("jughandle") interchange on I-287.

Well, here I am. And no slack for the country boy at all. I haven't stopped moving since arrival on Valentine's Day at 11:00 PM. I like what I have seen so far. Cherry Hill is about as far away from Patterson as you can get without leaving NJ.

Cherry Hill is way down south/southwest, across the Delaware River from Philly, while Patterson is in the opposite (northeast) corner of the state, not far from NYC.

Patterson is a tired, run-down, largely abandoned old industrial city, no doubt, and certainly doesn't measure up to Washington DC ~ but is it really that much worse than Trenton? ;^)

That Irish session is quite a ways north of Cherry Hill, probably at least a 2 hour drive, but if you're into camping, there's a state park campground just north of Lambertville where you can stay overnight, and as I'm a ranger there, I can make sure you get a good campsite. (it's a nice scenic place on the Delaware River).

Oh, but the way, I forgot to mention that there's a monthly singaround going on in the central part of the state that you might enjoy, again, it's not really close to Cherry Hill, but not ridiculously far, either. Dick Greenhaus and Susan are regulars there, too. PM me when you get to NJ and I'll give you more info.

So Clifton, you live in Carteret or someplace? Woodbridge? Perth Amboy?

I crossed the Outerbridge many a time to drink as a teenager. (Legal age was 18 in New York back then, vs 21 in New Jersey, and there were places on Staten Island where a 15-year old could "pass" for 18.) I lived in Plainfield, but went to high school in Metuchen and so had buddies from all over Middlesex County ~ i.e., right next door to the Outerbridge.

Poppagator, we must have been of like minds at the same time: who thought state-by-state rules were a good idea?! I, too, drank legally in NY when it was 21 in NJ. Seemed awfully damn cool to pull out a LEGAL I.D.!!

My first legal-21 drink was on an airplane: reeaalll long story....

Good grief, we may have tipped a few and not even known it. I went over that Outerbridge more times than I can recall in the late sixties and early seventies

I don't think I ever drank legally in Staten Island; didn't turn 18 until after going away to college.
