The Mitchell Trio (with Joe Frazier, John Denver, and Mike Kobluk) did a nice job of that tune.

It is on YouTube so I won't post the lyrics. I remembered some of the lyrics from long ago but didn't remember how haunting it is nor how beautiful the harmonies are.

I've been looking for this song for years as well. It was my favorite song when I was about 6 or 7 years old.

Earlier in this thread, someone said that Fidel Castro outlawed boxing in Cuba. Not true. He outlawed professional boxing for prize money, but continued a boxing program for "amateur" athletics (i.e. the Olympics, etc.).

Here is a quote from an internet history of Cuban boxing:

"Like all Communist regimes, Cuba scouted talent at a young age and channeled potential athletes into state-sponsored athletic schools. "I didn't choose boxing," said Cuban defector Juan Carlos Gomez in a recent interview. "They chose it for me in Cuba. I wanted to become a baseball player. That was always my dream. But, you know, in Cuba you are not allowed to make your own decisions." "

Teofilo Stevenson was a well-known Cuban Heavyweight amateur who dominated the amatuer sport back in the '70s. So Fidel's Cuba certainly is no pious anti-boxing regime.   Boxing, like all sport in Cuba, serves the state.

Untitled Protest, Country Joe & The Fish
Red and swollen tears tumble from her eyes
While cold silver birds who came to cruise the skies
Send death down to bend and twist her tiny hands
And then proceed to "Target B" in keeping with their plans
And we send cards and letters
(or prayers and praises)

One restless night last week after watching too much CNN I came up with the following additional verse and chorus to update "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation".

Now Vietnam is past and gone
And just an echo lingers on
A blood-stained page in US history
But there's no time for looking back
We have to move on to Iraq
Cos "history is all in the past" you see

Chorus: And Dubya Bush he told the nation
Please don't call this an invasion
It's humanitarian you see
It's not for oil, or a holy war
I'll tell you what were fighting for
Were trying to save Iraq from the Iraquis.

I don't have a contact email address to ask Tom's permission to do this but I suspect he would approve anyway.

i recently got 2 tom paxton cd's and
am listening to both over and over.
tom paxton's web site
yes he does have a web site, and there is a great picture of
him, Anne Hills, and Bob Gibson on one of the "album"
(remember those black vinyl discs??) covers...
he has a very moving song about 9-11 which
mentions the firefighters coming up the stairs
wile the people in the towers were coming down,
and there is touching imagery in both Looking for the Moon"
and the previous disc "Under American Skies"
He performed at the Kate Wolf festival and
was insiring--as ever!!
timeless songs with messages that unfortunatley
fit today as well as nearly 1/2 a century ago...

Don Meixner you sound like a soul mate!
"Paxton was my favprite for years, followed by Phil Ochs. Still trying to figure what all the excitment was about Dylan."
It was those first two albums of Dylan's that did it for me..then he went down one road and I followed Tom and Phil. Never regretted it.

Subject: Lyr Add: LYNDON JOHNSON TOLD THE NATION (T Paxton)
From: KickyC
Date: 17 Dec 98 - 10:18 PM

I looked for this song in the DT and couldn't find it, so here are the lyrics. I use this song in my Modern US History class when I teach kids about Vietnam and escalation, who was fighting who etc. It really helps.

LYNDON JOHNSON TOLD THE NATION

I got a letter from LBJ
It said, "this is your lucky day,
It's time to put you Khaki trouser on.
Though it may seem very queer
We've got no jobs to give you here
So we are sending you to Viet Nam.

CHORUS:
And Lyndon Johnson told the nation,
"Have no fear of escalation
I am trying ev'ryone to please.
Though it really isn’t war
We're sending 50,000 more
To help save Viet Nam from the Vietnamese.

I jumped off the old troop ship,
I sank in mud up to my hips,
And cussed until the captain called me down.
"Never mind how hared it's raining,
Think of all the ground we're gaining,
Just don't take one step outside of town."

Every night the local gentry
Slip out past the sleeping sentry
They go out to join the old V.C.
In their nightly little dramas
They put on their black pajamas
And come lobbing mortar shells at me.

We go 'round in helicopters
Like a bunch of big grasshoppers
Searching for the Viet Cong in vain.
They left a note that they had gone
They had to get back to Saigon,
Their government positions to maintain.

Well, here I sit in this rice paddy,
Wondering about Big Daddy,
And I know that Lyndon loves me so.
Yet how sadly I remember
Way back yonder in November
When he said I'd never have to go.

I know this is in one of the Sing Out compilations of all their songs, but I can't remember right off hand if it is in the pink one or the blue one. It's probably the one with the later editions in it.

Susan, My facination with Scottish Irish music I owe directly to the The Corrie Folk Trio and Paddie Bell. I found their first two Electra records in cut out bins at WT Grants Dept store in Auburn, NY. .49 if it was mono .89 if it was stereo. Since I was a big spender I went for the stereo disks. I also got a Watersons record and Paul McNeil, Traditionally at the Troubadour. I can't tell you why I was so taken by the Corries in 1966, being as there main target audience has since been identified as old ladies who wouldn't mind their negligable skills or abilities. As a 16 year old folk/rocker I was taken away to rediscover my Highland heritage which turns out to be considerable.

Late 1966 - Los Angeles Free Press - Broadsides had words and chording to "I got a letter" and "In the hills of West Virginy there live a Nancy brown" - they were quickly learned, and were my introducation to warnings on the the "establishment."

Gary and Don - Search for Lyndon to find Letter from LBJ in the DT. Since the beginning of the DT's prehistory was my writing down the songs I was singing in the 60s when I was going thru a Paxton phase, there are LOTS of early Paxton in the database. That was before I discovered English/Scottish music.

Although this isn't really war we're sending fifty thousand more to help save Viet Nam from Vietnamese.

I jumped off the old troop ship, I sank in mud up to my hips , I cussed until the captain called me down, Never mind how hard its raining, think of all the ground we're gaing , just don't take one step outside of town,

And Lyndon Johnson told....

Paxton was my favprite for years, followed by Phil Ochs. Still trying to figure what all the excitment was about Dylan.

Wow, powerful lyrics on both those songs... Love Paxton, but don't have many of his recordings... does he have a site? Oh, it IS good to see some of you still have kept some of your value systems from those days! We are rather inclined to become complacent when things are going well for us. We forget that some of those problems still exist and such songs are timeless.

Meanwhile, there was another protest song that I remember snatches of.."Lyndon Johnson told the Nation, Have no fear of escalation...I'm trying everyone to please... and though this isn't really war, we're sending 50,000 more.... to help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese..."

Anybody know the rest? Thanks.. Gary

Ralph,

Call me a liar for being one year off in a 34 year old memory. Jeepers. Like I said, I'm old, it was late and I was tired. Thanks for the correction....Pussycat.

The Tom Paxton album, "Ain't That News" came out on Electra Records in 1963 or 64.,

"An its news news ain't that news, ain't that somethin' to see."

Some days lately I find my self drivin along singing those songs from the early Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs albums and recall those days of common purpose. Common in that my friends and I had the same politics and direction. Now that I'm 48 and my friends have changed, probably at the same rate I have, I am amazed at how few of us still believe the same things. A local factory closes down and I sing Phil Ochs "Automation Song" or "Links on the Chain". I sing Tom Paxton's song Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney and I am still stunned at the power of the song. I can still see the Life magazine photos of the courtroom where the cops are all sitting and chewing Redman and grinning at the camera. If its true that we who refuse to remember the past are doomed to repeat it in the future then maybe we should all play those old songs now and then. Like Phil Ochs's "When I'm Gone" or Tom Paxton's "Don't You let Nobody Turn You Around". Just to keep us in touch with the past enough to help us temper the present. Well that got off track, but its late and I'm tired.

nlees......

This is from Tom's "Ain't That News!" album. Not sure of the date, but I'd guess about '68. This is a MONO vinyl. Five of the 14 cuts on this album are 'protest' songs, but they till come across pretty well.

We Didn't Know
Tom Paxton

"We didn't know," said the Burgomeister,
"About the camp on the edge of town,
It was Hitler and his crew
That tore the German nation down.
We saw the cattle cars, it's true,
Maybe they carried a Jew or two.
They woke us up as they rattled through,
But what did you expect me to do?

    CHORUS
"We didn't know at all, we didn't hear a thing,
You can't hold us to blame, what could we do?
It was a terrible shame, but we can't bear the blame,
Oh, no, not us, we didn't know."

"We didn't know," said the congregation,
Singin' a hymn in their church of white,
"The press was full of lies about us;
Preacher told us we were right.
The outside agitators came,
They burned some churches and put the blame
On decent Southern peoples' name,
To set our colored people aflame,
And maybe some of our boys got hot,
And a couple of niggers and Reds got shot.
They should have stayed where they belong,
Preacher would-a told us if we'd done wrong.

    CHORUS

"We didn't know," said the puzzled voters,
Watching the President on TV,
"I guess we've got to drop those bombs,
If we're gonna keep South Asia free.
The President's such a peaceful man,
I guess he's got some kind of plan.
They say we're torturing prisoners of war,
But I don't believe that stuff no more.
Torturin' prisoners is a communist game,
And you can bet they're doin' the same.
I wish this war was over and through,
But what do you expect me to do?

    CHORUS

We Didn't Know added to DT April 2000.

It was a Tom Paxton song
(Sample verse)
We didn't know, said the Burgomeister
About the camps at the edge of town
It was Hitler and his crew,
Who tore the German nation down
We saw the cattle cars, it's true
And maybe they carried a Jew or two.
We heard the cries as they rumbled through
But what did you expect us to do

We didn't know at all, We didn't hear a thing
You can't hold us to blame
What could we do
It was a terrible shame
But we can't bear the blame
It wasn't us, We didn't know.

I tried the DT under [Tom Paxton] and got over 30 songs, none of which fitted. [we didn't know] yield two inappropriate songs. So you'll have to wait for another Mudcatter to give you more verses - or find a T Paxton songbook or a library full of back issues of Sing Out, because I know I did see the song in print years ago.

this reminds me of a Phil Ochs song about a woman who was murdered while calling for help on a New York street - many heard her calls but none responded.

There was a song that went, approximately: We didn't know at all, We didn't see a thing, You can't hold us to blame, What could we do? It was a terrible shame, but we can't stand the blame, ... Does anyone know the artists, song title, etc?????
