Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s From: open mike Date: 02 Feb 03 - 01:39 AM i recently got 2 tom paxton cd's and am listening to both over and over. tom paxton's web site yes he does have a web site, and there is a great picture of him, Anne Hills, and Bob Gibson on one of the "album" (remember those black vinyl discs??) covers... he has a very moving song about 9-11 which mentions the firefighters coming up the stairs wile the people in the towers were coming down, and there is touching imagery in both Looking for the Moon" and the previous disc "Under American Skies" He performed at the Kate Wolf festival and was insiring--as ever!! timeless songs with messages that unfortunatley fit today as well as nearly 1/2 a century ago... |

I found their first two Electra records in cut out bins at WT Grants Dept store in Auburn, NY. .49 if it was mono .89 if it was stereo. Since I was a big spender I went for the stereo disks. I also got a Watersons record and Paul McNeil, Traditionally at the Troubadour. I can't tell you why I was so taken by the Corries in 1966, being as there main target audience has since been identified as old ladies who wouldn't mind their negligable skills or abilities. As a 16 year old folk/rocker I was taken away to rediscover my Highland heritage which turns out to be considerable. Regards Don Meixner |

We are rather inclined to become complacent when things are going well for us. We forget that some of those problems still exist and such songs are timeless. Meanwhile, there was another protest song that I remember snatches of.."Lyndon Johnson told the Nation, Have no fear of escalation...I'm trying everyone to please... and though this isn't really war, we're sending 50,000 more.... to help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese..."

Some days lately I find my self drivin along singing those songs from the early Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs albums and recall those days of common purpose. Common in that my friends and I had the same politics and direction. Now that I'm 48 and my friends have changed, probably at the same rate I have, I am amazed at how few of us still believe the same things. A local factory closes down and I sing Phil Ochs "Automation Song" or "Links on the Chain". I sing Tom Paxton's song Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney and I am still stunned at the power of the song. I can still see the Life magazine photos of the courtroom where the cops are all sitting and chewing Redman and grinning at the camera. If its true that we who refuse to remember the past are doomed to repeat it in the future then maybe we should all play those old songs now and then. Like Phil Ochs's "When I'm Gone" or Tom Paxton's "Don't You let Nobody Turn You Around". Just to keep us in touch with the past enough to help us temper the present. I tried the DT under [Tom Paxton] and got over 30 songs, none of which fitted. [we didn't know] yield two inappropriate songs. So you'll have to wait for another Mudcatter to give you more verses - or find a T Paxton songbook or a library full of back issues of Sing Out, because I know I did see the song in print years ago. |
