The jazz guys I was thinking of are the Blue Monks. I know the piano player and he's really good, and although I haven't heard the full trio I'd expect them to be really good too. They do gig in the area, but haven't gone national or anything. So I'd say they're definitely below the Canadian Radar. :)

42- I don't know who you are or what your folk club is called - perhaps you could give us some real names? If you want some quality banjo music you could try The Banjo Special, or old time and original banjo songs and tunes Arnie Naiman and Chris Coole, or Old time fiddle and banjo Erynn Marshall and Chris Coole, or Bluegrass Music The Foggy Hogtown Boys, or high quality Celtic virtuosos Brian Taheny and Loretto Reid, or Old Time songs with variety Ragged But Right. Haven't noticed a mention of Vince Morash (based in Nova Scotia) - he'll be at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival in August as part of the group Crossession - a great singer, and he's written some marvelous songs.

And I expect James Keelaghan
is above the radar - he is one of the most interesting song writers we know.

Some Toronto-area people I'd suggest are: Norm Hacking, Eve Goldberg, Joanne Crabtree (who is Mudcatters Balladeer), Heather Dale. They are all good solo folkish singer and/or songwriters. Do you book bluegrass groups? If so, look into Roses in the Snow, an all-women group that drew a big crowd at Winterfolk.

Do you have a website with a list of past bookings or something like that, so we can get an idea of your musical focus? Do you ever hire opening acts?

das macht SHOW did a brilliant one and are coming back to this neck of the woods to do a house concert on March 4th. Most of the other groups you mentioned are not what I would consider "underappreciated" on the Canadian folk scene although I don't know Kevin Carley or Marion Parsons.(I'll look 'em up)

Part of the mandate is to expose the great unwashed public to new music on a very tight budget and, much as I love the Jennys, we can't afford them.

A group called Spraio (pronounced "spree") headed up by Pat Simmons, play some fine Celtic Music, including uillean pipes, fiddle, etc. I heard them in Brockville about a year ago They are performing at a house concert, here in Kingston next weekend. Certainly I enjoyed them the last time I heard them and see no reason why I shouldn't enjoy them next weekend. If any different I will post another message.

Where abouts is your series? I am basicaly in the Orangeville area.

While we are on the subject osf shameless self promotion. My group Triangl (an a cappela trio) and another group (Nonesuch) from the Cambridge area, did a concert for the Brampton Folk Club this last December. We all had a good time, as did the 92 people in the audience, so we are planning on doing a few more gigs together next Christmas. Both groups perform from the "FAR" from regular Christmas fare, with a British bias. I know it's early for Christmas but you need to book early to avoid disapointment.
Could be interested in attending your shows if they are reasonably close/ artists of interest. PM me if you wish to.

Hi folks,
Venturing above the line to ask for suggestions of Canadian performers who might have been flying 'below the radar' and not received the attention they deserve.

I'm in the process of booking a small concert/house concert series just north of Toronto and am looking for some contacts I might have missed.
