Another vote for "Imagine."

I know some of you more cynical types really dislike this song, or at least feel that John, as a multimillionaire, was hypocritical in daring to propose that we "imagine no possessions."

I think that a multimillionaire has as much right to be a visionary as anyone else. If I were fortunate enough and talented enough to tap into the world's consiousness as effectively (and profitably) as John Lennon did, I certainly would not appreciate being told that I had lost my right to continue expressing myself in my art.

You might say that Les and I are dreamers, but we're not the only ones.

I'll admit it's a beautiful song, but not one of my favourites.
John himself said "Imagine is Working Class Hero and God with sugar-coating".

Along with Van Morrison another really over rated, two bob pop star who would have got nowhere if not for the songwriting talent of McCartney & Harrison. Bet you didn't known that most of his solo efforts were actually penned by yoko! I read that in an interview with him in melody maker in about 1971.

Must agree with Mindblast, the man was a wanker. Said that the only reason he didn't come to England anymore was that he had no green card. Spent most of his latter years boozing and making a total prat of himself. Didn't do many gigs simply because he couldn't play live! Despised the very fans that subsidised his life of super luxury in the U.S. The world is a better place without that sort of shit wasting good air & water.

None of the above. Very limited as a writer, only managed second-rate R&R/R&B or sickly schmaltz (like Imagine/Beautiful Boy/Woman or that god-awful Christmas dirge). I always thought he was the least talented Beatle (apart from Starkey) BUT (and it's a H-U-G-E but!) his voice was THE sound of the Beatles and without him they'd never have received the recognition they did.

Obviously we have a few musical geniuses in our midst ; for to call the greatest English Rock Star "Shit" you must be a total legend or are you just another couch potato who sits with beer in one hand remote in the other criticising everyone and everything because underneath all the bluster you are a zero on the scale of life? Whereas John Lennon he rated very high with millions and was deservedly recognised as a genius and one of the all time greatest Britains in a recent poll.Didn't see any of you lot mentioned and if you are not British then you can be forgiven your unfortunate designated lack of taste and intelligent repartiff after all as the great man once said "no long haired son of tricky Dickies gonna soft soap me with just a pocketful of hope".Lennon prevails!

Well, SW, very well indeed. No need for the abuse, we're all entitled to our opinions, and stating yours in an abusive manner doesn't make you any more or less correct. And if 'registering high with millions' was an automatic guarantee of quality, MacDonalds would be top of the Egon Ronay guide. 'The Sun' is read by a large number of people in the UK, but it can hardly be described as a literature classic.

He wrote trivial, trite songs which would appeal to the trivial trite minds of the then modern uneducated masses. The teeny bobbers of the 60s were brainwashed with this drivel, constantly pumped out by the English media to prove that they could produce better drivel than America. Pop song by definition will always be thus and the losers are the poor suckers who buy and believe such junk. Lennon, Yoko Ono, Sir Paul are the winners.

Some good arguments raised i.e McDonalds, Sun "Newspaper" -I still feel that there is a vitriolic Anti Beatle League going here and I believe they are missing out on some of the best music of the 20th Century because of their blinkered approach to music. Amen Brackn you obviously are able to appreciate that it is not about being an ardent longstanding fan (like myself) but an acceptance of talent.

SW - I have been a Beatles fan since their first TV appearance, before 'Love Me Do' hit the charts in the UK. Being a fan of a particular band doesn't mean I have to behave so immaturely as to deify the members, nor does it preclude me from recognising their individual strengths and weaknesses. IMO, Lennon's weakness was in his writing - not up to the standard of Macca or George Harrison - but his strength (and largely what made the Beatles the ground-breakers they were) was his unique voice, it was the sound of the Beatles. Without Lennon's vocal sound it's unlikely they would ever have been anything like as big as they were/are.

There - what was 'Anti-Beatles League' about that? If you still don't like it, eat my feckin' shorts.

I am beginning to get a feeling of Kafaesque goings on pertaining to this posting on a certain level. It is a case of condemn the man and his achievements and if anyone speaks up in his defence go for them also. Sycophants work both sides of the fence and can be just as garrillous against a person as the the obsessives are for. I have consistently put forward opposing views to test the mettle of "in tune minds" playing Devils Advocate, on more than one occassion, but speaking out passionately in favour of my own personal favourites. If this offends the "out of tune minds" I apologise but I was never interested or requesting your opinions in the first place.I credit John Lennon with a great deal of influence on the 20th Century and admire his strength and talent in the face of adversity -who else after "She Loves You Yeh! Yeh! Yeh!" was daring and brave enough to go out on a limb and say "Woman is The Nigger of The World" and "Give Peace A Chance" and "Free John Sinclair" etc. etc. etc. You can cast your slings and arrows but Lennons reverence was sorely earned and his influence on popular culture greatly missed. The man was murdered in cold blood for christs sake! have you no compassion? - he offered the world a vision of peace and love and all you denigrators mock him and his genius. He was sure right when he said "the way things are going their gonna crucify me" I don't think he was of the mind that it would be you lot though, by any means.I am not the worlds biggest Dylan,Ochs,Seeger, fan but I don't tap into threads ass-kissing these guys and offer negativity and abuse -each to their own and think on -if you can!

Guest SW, Words like 'over' and 'reaction' spring to mind. I simply said that, IMO (and the title of this thread indicates with absolute clarity that it was started for the purpose of eliciting people's opinions, so I don't need your permission) he wasn't a great writer, but that he was a great singer and the main reason for the Beatles intial success. If, by your comprehension of the English language, that equates to 'crucifixion', you're either singularly sensitive (in which case you need to either grow a skin or seek help with managing your anger) or you need to go to English night-classes.
My final word.
'Bye.

My skin is fine and I don't get angry over such trivial issues I will have you know.Your opinion that Lennon was not a great writer is based on what level? I agree he was a fantastic singer but equally so McCartney had a terrific voice and still does to a lesser degree these days and I think both of them are equally important in the rise of the group.I put forward a point of view defending one of my heroes and I would like to know why you are less than enamoured with Lennon after all he did contribute a great deal to popular culture.

John Lennon always complained that Paul MacCartney wrote a lot of schlock, but Lennon seems to have written rather a lot of "achlock" himself of which Imagine may be the best or worst example, depending on your point of view. However, like MacCartney, he has also wriiten some wonderful songs. Among my favourites are Working Class Hero, Instant Karma (We All Shine On), Julia, Hide Your Love Away, Mother, Across The Universe and Come Together.

I AM THE WALRUS. Don't really know how much of a L-Mc effort this was but it'll always be Lennon's to me. As for Imagine I thought it a dirge then and now.

Hmmm ...

Well I'm just sittin here watchin the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch em roll ...

I picked that one and not Imagine, because after years and YEARS of it being my favourite Lennon song, the Conservatory now has it on their repertoire list for Grade 8 piano exams. Which means that now, everybody and their next door neighbour wants to play it. As a piano teacher, I've hear it played so awful - sorry, that's often - that now I can only lay back and dream of this perfect enchanted world ... one where NO ONE WILL EVER EVER MASSACRE THAT LOVELY PIECE AGAIN!!!

I just got back from a performance class where it was executed (quite literally) half a dozen times. So I apologize for the rant, but *whew* it was fun to vent this in a semi-safe place far far FAR away from my innocent students. They are improving and they do love it, after all.

Thank you Mudcat

If John Lennon knew better he would have got into English folk; if Gordon Brown knew better he would have joined the SNP.

I like a lot of his songs, but I have a fondness for "Imagine", as they play it in supermarkets and dollar stores in the U.S. as music to shop by.
People sticking their face into the dairy case to get a blast of cold air and John: "Imagine no religion, it's easy if you try... " It's like a joke by John from the next dimension.

The greatest Beatles song was "Here Comes the Sun" by a country mile. Because it was composed by a real musician I suppose.

I'm certainly not a Beatles fan - I found them soft-centred. I was a Stones man. Of the Beatles, I would have preferred Harrison or Lennon to the others. Starkey was simply barely competent, and McCartney was consistently twee.

Lennon's vocals were not bad at all - "I saw her standing there" is a fine piece of rock singing.

However, surely the thread seeks preferences amongs SOLO Lennon Songs.

I opt for "Cold Turkey" - but the best bit is the guitar line, and I have a little bell going off in my head that he did not play it and that it was Clapton - am I wrong?

"John Sinclair" stands as one of the few protest songs that actually worked. The song and John's efforts on his behalf were instrumental in helping to gain Mr. Sinclair's release from prison where he was serving ten years for giving two joints to a narc (they gave him ten for two, what more can the bastards do). Dylan's "Hurricane" exposed an even greater injustice, nevertheless I give John props, plus the slide guitar really rocks.
The primal scream of "Mother" is one of the most powerfully emotive pieces of vocalization ever. I literally get chills up my spine whenever I hear it. I think it took a certain kind of courage to give unabashed tribute to his love for Yoko Ono in songs like "Oh, Yoko" when she was being held in such low regard by his own fanbase.
I also love "Instant Karma", "Imagine", "Yer Blues" and really just about everything he ever wrote. All that being said I have a special place in my soul for "Working Class Hero". I used to break out the old vinyl and play that song every year on Thanksgiving Day.
I'm not quite sure why, maybe as counterpoint to the spirit of the day, but it was a privately heartfelt tribute to a man who had a major impact on my life. I know he was far from saintly, his imperfections were part of what made him so infatically human, but his willingness to profoundly expose that human frailty to the world made him great.

I must have my Beatles tracks mixed up (entirely possible, since I am no great fan). Which was the track they recorded last, for their first album? I remember reading that Lennon had a cold or throat or something, and had been singing gently all day and living on Fisnerman's Friends - and was finally able to cut loose on that since he knew it was the last of the day and if he wrecked his voice he would not need it again?

Rather than putting their skills into their own English folk music, the Beatles were very good at copying an aspect of American culture - pop.

Rather than putting their skills into their own English folk music, the Beatles were very good at copying an aspect of American culture - pop.

Ignoring the absurdity of the first bit of that statement, The Beatles didn't just copy an aspect of American culture, they, and countless others, including God-like Geordie Eric Burdon and The Animals, gave it back to them transfigured. It was the Animals' Chas Chandler who brought Jimi Hendrix to England (initially staying at Candler's mother's in 2nd Avenue in Heaton) and it was Jimi Hendrix who took The Soft Machine back to America to tour with him & record their first album. Seminal moments in the international history of pop, without which...

Interestingly, I remember reading that the Beatles were much frowned upon in folk clubs near the Mersey for some time, because they did NOT copy the then folk-fashionable US things like Seeger, Guthrie, Leadbelly et al.

Personally, it was flipping over the All You Need is Love 7" way back in the summer of 1967 that I regard as a seminal moment in my own musical history. Although only 6-years-old at the time I nevertheless recall my soul thrilling to the psychedelic folk bag-piping modality of Baby, You're a Rich Man which still brings a smile to my lips more than 40 years on.

No great Beatles Fan, they were part of the cultural ambience of my childhood - and along with other folkish popular musics, from Rolf Harris to Ennio Morricone, they helped shaped my musical vision in my formative years. Not as much as the Bonzo's though - Vivian Stanshall's recorder (that's English Flute to you, WAV) playing on Quiet Talks & Summer Walks (note: comes in around 2.30, after Neil Innes' spontaneous rendering of Zappa's Dog Breath) is likewise enduringly sublime...
