Grandma Offer died in Detroit in the late 1950's. A year or so later, Grandpa scandalized the family by taking off for California, falling in love and getting married, and then getting an annulment. He then moved in with us in Wisconsin, and brought back tales and photos of his exotic adventures in California. I was about ten at the time, and I was amazed by his pictures of carpets of orange poppies. I've lived in California since 1974, but it isn't often that I've seen flowers as lush as the ones in Grandpa's pictures. This year may be a banner year for wildflowers in California, and I plan to take my sweetie on lots of romantic flower hikes. Hope you do the same with your sweetie, Annamill.

annamill, I live in Santa Barbara, maybe that's just far enough away to make the difference. I would say the weather is generally warm and nice from about March to November. It might get hot for a week or so, but not much more than that.

Amos, I've been enjoying the rain because it reminds me so much of spring in the East. I am, however, looking forward to those warm days you're talking about.

Joe, we will definitely go to the park for the wildflowers. Honey absolutely loves seeing wildflowers and so do I. We also love the desert. It is so beautiful. We will be buying some piece of property and we don't know if we want to live by the ocean, Honey's a surfer, or the desert. It's less expensive and we could buy something with land and have lots of music out there. He's a drummer and has many musician friends out here already. It's a tough decision.

Whatever we do, it'll be great!

Annamill, I stay out of the BS section, so I didn't know you had moved. Welcome to California, from one in the "better half" of the state!
I have an assignment for you: make a visit to Anza Borrego Desert State Park - try to make it at the peak of wildflower season (probably mid-March), and then report back to us. There has been plenty of reain this year, so it's likely to be a spectacular season.
I was in San Diego in March three years ago, and there had been no rain. The Wildflower Hotline said not to bother looking.
I hope you enjoy California as much as I do.

This is extraordinary rain we're having. It beats all records except perhaps two. We are taking to calling it San Deattle.

However when the rain lets up, you're about due for Spring, yes indeed,w hen the hills turn from brown to green (in this case, green to greener).

November to Xmas are usually sunbathing weather intermittently interleaved with sweater weather.

Sometimes March has rain but I think we've used up all the fresh water in the planetary system.

You're new here? Welcome to California, where we have no seasons as you may know them, but Mediterranean climate. Which means it's cold three nights a year, rainy three weeks a year, and warm to hot the rest of the time.

Nice, isn't it? And low humidity, which is the clincher. BTW, I'm in NorCal (Santa Rosa), but it's not that different from SoCal.

Of course, global warming and the attendant climate change will probably screw it all up anytime now...

In California, spring is the time between the rainy season (November to April) and the fire season (June through October).

Well, the weather appears to be a little weird this year there, but I can speak from my expereicne of years past. I'm not sure what you would classify as spring. It probably won't get cold again. If you can count anything that previously happened as cold. It probably will stop raining shortly, and if you are close to the coast it should get warm and nice until around next November when it cools off a little again. If you have a mountain in between you and the coast it should get nice and warm until July, and broiling and hot until November.
I always thought it was funny when they have back to school and fall fashions in the mall, sweaters and things when it's still 90 degrees outside in September. Now I keep thinking it's funny that they have cute summer dresses and light spring clothes while the temperature hovers in the 30's here. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. In both cases.

I'm new here. I've only been here since August. Do we have a spring?? The reason I ask is because in New Jersey, around April or May we would start getting light warm rains, the trees will start budding and generally give an all around feeling of the hopefulness of spring.

Well! Here we are at the end of February and everyone here says we're having storms!! Storms!! It's a wonderful, warm light rain. At least in this part of California. (San Diego) I look outside my window and see big fat buds on my trees ready to pop! The birds are going crazy, playing, chirping in their various voices! I'm loving it because for 59 years of my life this meant summer will be here soon and I feel good!

It this or is this not, spring?? In February!!
