I can hear him singing it in my mind, but I haven't been able to find a recording. If he didn't, he should have recorded it. I have a recording of him singing another "Jerusalem," but not "Holy City." By the way, Michael Crawford recorded "Holy City" on his recent "On Eagle's Wings" CD. It's awful. Don't buy it. "Holy City" and "Eagle's Wings" are two of my favorite religious songs, but Crawford's recording is so syrupy that I hate it. -Joe Offer- |

About 15 years ago Decca released two separate vinyls of The World's Greatest Voices, the original plus Vol 2. It includes this song plus a couple of dozen classics from the early part of this century with performances by Tauber, Peter Dawson, Moncrieff and many others - certainly no syrupy cover versions. I believe that it MAY have been issued on CD, but unlike a number of more recent Australian releases by the ABC it has not been digitally titivated. The version by Peter Dawson (?) is magnificent.
I do recommend this to anyone who can locate it. In fact I will send a taped copy of this to any one Mudcatter who posts a new tune to this forum by the end of Sunday 20 December. Joe Offer to work out the rules and adjudicate. (Thanks in advance Joe if you care to re-post this please).

I used to know this song by heart but I haven't sung it in years, maybe decades, and my memory needed refreshing. I was also intrigued to find that the same Englishman, Fred Weatherly, who wrote the lyrics to Danny Boy, also wrote these lyrics. I also did not know he did Roses Of Piccardy. I'm thinking of doing this as an offertory this coming Easter (next Sunday). Not sure how well it will work with just guitar accompaniment, but we'll see. Genie |
