Sorry, should have started a separate thread. The words to "The Holy City" are typed at the end of the thread "Words for Jerusalem(the English song)".

Hi. Love this thread. The second song about Jerusalem is called The Holy City. We sang it for an assembly in 7th grade, and later I played it as a violin solo. Didn't think I'd ever forget the words, but had to look it up to get the whole thing. Found it here, but no tune:

THE HOLY CITY
Original score
Copyright 1892 PD (5:29)

Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair;
I stood in old Jerusalem, beside the temple there;
I heard the children singing, and ever as they sang,
Me-thought the voice of angels from heav'n in answer rang
Me-thought the voice of angels from heav'n in answer rang.

Chorus
Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
Lift up your gates and sing
Hosanna in the highest
Hosanna to your King!

And then me-thought my dream was changed,
the streets no longer rang,
Hush'd were the glad Hosannas the little children sang,
The sun grew dark with mystery,
the morn was cold and chill,
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill,
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.

Chorus
Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
Lift up your gates and sing*
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna to your King!

And once again the scene was chang'd,
new earth there seem'd to be!
I saw the holy city beside the tideless sea;
The light of God was on its street;
the gates were open wide;
That all who would might enter in, and no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night, nor sun to shine by day;
It was the new Jerusalem, that would not pass away!
It was the new Jerusalem, that would not pass away.

Chorus
Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
Sing for the night is o'er,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna forever more!

Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna forever more

* -- I remember this line as "Hark how the Angels sing," but my memory is notorious....

If anyone's interested I'll try to hum the tune into the keyboard or something. No I don't do ABCMus and may have time to learn it around August 2002.

Hi,

Here it is anyway..... as usual don't expect it to be 100% .... it's from memory.....

don't know how the triplets will come out as ABC.... so if it's doing something weird it's probably triplets.

I'm still trying to find out if Paul Robeson ever recorded this song. I can hear him singing it in my mind, but I haven't been able to find a recording. If he didn't, he should have recorded it. I have a recording of him singing another "Jerusalem," but not "Holy City."
By the way, Michael Crawford recorded "Holy City" on his recent "On Eagle's Wings" CD. It's awful. Don't buy it. "Holy City" and "Eagle's Wings" are two of my favorite religious songs, but Crawford's recording is so syrupy that I hate it.

Compliments of the Season,

I very rarely disagree with you Joe, and this is yet another example. Enough said.

About 15 years ago Decca released two separate vinyls of The World's Greatest Voices, the original plus Vol 2. It includes this song plus a couple of dozen classics from the early part of this century with performances by Tauber, Peter Dawson, Moncrieff and many others - certainly no syrupy cover versions. I believe that it MAY have been issued on CD, but unlike a number of more recent Australian releases by the ABC it has not been digitally titivated. The version by Peter Dawson (?) is magnificent.

I do recommend this to anyone who can locate it. In fact I will send a taped copy of this to any one Mudcatter who posts a new tune to this forum by the end of Sunday 20 December. Joe Offer to work out the rules and adjudicate. (Thanks in advance Joe if you care to re-post this please).

Regards
John

Alison, I have transferred responsibility to Joe in this regard, but would suggest no impediment to experienced hands like yourself, except that the admission bar may be raised somewhat. In any event I believe that we should encourage as many contributors as possible.

Maybe someone else could sponsor a reward to non-virgin contributors.

John

Seriously, now, I think Alison must be the most prolific tune poster Mudcat has ever seen, so she should get the first tape. A thread for posting tunes will appear in a flash. Watch this space for a link.....here 'tis: Click me, but gently.

You're losing 'em, you're losing 'em,
Hoist up your trousers high,
Whose are they? Whose are they?
My God, what a terrible size.

I know somebody who has sung this in the past. I'll try to get hold of him.

From African Methodist Episcopal Church Review, Vol. 28, Num. 1 (10/1911), pp. 620-21:

                         "THE HOLY CITY."

Thirty men, red-eyed and disheveled, lined up before a judge of the San
Francisco police court. It was the regular morning company of "drunks
and disorderlies." Some were old and hardened, others hung their heads
in shame. Just as the momentary disorder attending the bringing in of
the prisoners quieted down, a strange thing happened. A strong, clear
voice from below began singing:

                        "Last night I lay a-sleeping,
There came a dream so fair."

Last night! It had been for them all a nightmare or a drunken stupor.
The song was such a contrast to the horrible fact that no one could fail of
a sudden shock at the thought the song suggested.

                         "I stood in old Jerusalem,
                         Beside the temple there"

the song went on. The judge had paused. He made a quiet inquiry. A
former member of a famous opera company, known all over the country,
was awaiting trial for forgery. It was he who was singing in his cell.
Meantime the song went on and every man in the line showed emotion.
One or two dropped on their knees; one boy at the end of the line, after a
desperate effort at self-control, leaned against the wall, buried his face
against his folded arms, and sobbed, "O mother, mother!"
The sobs, cutting to the very heart of the men who heard, and the song, still
welling its way through the court room, blended in the hush. At length
one man protested.
"Judge," said he "have we got to submit to this? We're here to take
our punishment, but this--" He, too, began to sob.
It was impossible to proceed with the business of the court, yet the judge
gave no order to stop the song The police sergeant, after a surprised
effort to keep the men in line, stepped back and waited with the rest. The
song moved on to its climax:

"Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing, for the night is o'er!
Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna for evermore!"

In an ecstacy of melody the last words rang out, and then there was
silence.
The judge looked into the faces of the men before him. There was not
one who was not touched by the song; not one in whom some better impulse
was not stirred. He did not call the cases singly-a kind word of advice,
and he dismissed them all. No man was fined or sentenced to the work-
house that morning. The song had done more good than punishment
could have accomplished.

Thank you, Masato, for the heart-warming story of the San Fransisco trial It quite restored my faith in the essential goodness of humanity!
And while discussing this majestic tune, let us not forget that Duke Ellington reworked it for his extraordinary and influential "Black and Tan Fantasy".

Stephen Adams, who wrote the music, was the stage name of Michael Maybrick, born in Liverpool, 1844, d. 1913. Apparently he had a great voice. With Frederick Weatherly, he wrote many songs, including "Nancy Lee"- "Of all the wives as e'er you know, Yo Ho! lads! ho! Yo Ho! Yo Ho! There's none like Nancy Lee...."

The above mentioned Michael Maybrick was the brother of James Maybrick (1838-1889), who is allaged to have been Jack the Ripper (aka "The Whitechapel Murderer", who killed 5 prostitutes in the East End of London from August to November 1888), in the book "The Diary of Jack the Ripper" by Shirley Harrison (Smith Gryphon, London, 1993, ISBN 1 85685 050 1). The book gives his stage name as Stephen Adams.

I've heard it and enjoyed it but can't, alas, remember much more than has already been already quoted. I think it began something like: "I hired myself a fancy suit to wear to a fancy ball, the trousers were too big for me, the jacket was too small..." And so on.
But I don't know who sang it or where I heard it, and look forward, as you do, to finding out more.

I know the parody of 'Jerusalem' as:

Last night I borrowed a fulldress suit
To go to a fulldress ball,
The jacket was too short for me,
The trousers were too tall,
I cut six inches off the end
And went to the fulldress ba-a-all.

Chorus:
You're losing 'em, you're losing 'em!
They're hanging on the floor,
Who's are they? Who's are they?
We're sure that they are not yours,
Who's are they? Who's are they?
We're sure that they are not yours!

Enjoy!

Imo, not really off-topic:

This song is probably posted on Mudcat, but just in case it's not, here's the lyrics and a midi for "The Holy City":

The Holy City
Music by Michael Maybrick
Original lyrics by Frederick E. Weatherly - 1892

Revelation 21:2
"And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as
a bride adorned for her husband."

Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing and ever as they sang,
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill,
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
And once again the scene was changed; new earth there seemed to be;
I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea;
The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter and no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day;
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

"The Holy City" was posted by Alison in Dec. 1998, thread 7870, also an abc: Holy City

In that thread, Masato posted a story, "Holy City," from the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review, 1911, that is well worth reading in connection with this hymn.

Words and midi at Cyberhymnal: Holy City
Note the different verse pattern.
Both Weatherby and Maybrick were English. Weatherby is equally noted for "Danny Boy" and "Roses of Picardy."

Glad to find the lyrics to this song, as well as the YouTube links, here.
I used to know this song by heart but I haven't sung it in years, maybe decades, and my memory needed refreshing.

I was also intrigued to find that the same Englishman, Fred Weatherly, who wrote the lyrics to Danny Boy, also wrote these lyrics.   I also did not know he did Roses Of Piccardy.

I'm thinking of doing this as an offertory this coming Easter (next Sunday). Not sure how well it will work with just guitar accompaniment, but we'll see.

I'm looking for an arrangement of The Holy City for violin and piano in the key of D.The arrangement has double stops in the chorus section. I am sure it's out of print since no publisher has it. Anyone have a copy?

Just played this in church this morning. Vocals by Ernest (he's 80!)
at request of elderly couple - members of our congregation - it's their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Parody words would be appreciated.
thanks in anticipation.

These are the words I have dragged up fom memory of the 1950/60 era:

Last night I hired a full dress suit
to go to a full dress ball.
The trousers the were far too long
the jacket was far too small
In order to make the trousers fit
I cut six yards(!) away
and as I danced around the floor I heard the people say:

(What did they say?)

Chorus:
You're losing them, you're losing them
lift up your trousers high
Whose are they, whose are they?
My G** you;re a H*** of a mess!

Repeat chorus

Tommy Handley, the most popular [probably] comedian of the Second World War years, mentioned in his autobiography having been thrown out by the ear from a school-children's concert for having sung the "You're losing 'em" variant. As I recall it after these many years, his version went

"One day I bought a new dress suit to go to a fancy ball,
The waistcoat it was much too tight, the coat it was too small.
And as for the pants, they would not fit
So I tied them up with string
And as I waltzed around the floor I could hear all the people sing --

Yer losin' 'em, yer losin' 'em'
Hold up your trousers tight.
Whose are they? Whose are they?
Oh it was a terrible sight!"

He further mentioned that, when he later in life met the teacher who had ejected him, she confessed that she had only done so because, if he had gone on for a moment longer, she would have lost face among her colleagues and the pupils by collapsing into helpless mirth.

On second recollection, IIRC the waistcoat was much too 'large', rather than 'tight', which contrasts better with the coat or jacket being too small.

Another version...

Last night I borrowed a dress suit
To go to the county ball,
The jacket was too large for me,
The trousers were too small,
And as I walked across the room,
I heard the people sing...

Chorus:
You're losing them, you're losing them!
PUll up your trousers, do!
Whose are they? Whose are they?
Those trews don't belong to you,
Whose are they? Whose are they?
They don't belong to you!

This is the version... from memory .... that Nigel Denver sang:

Last night I wore a full dress suit and went to a full dress ball,
The trousers they were far too long, the jacket far too small,
And so I took some scissors and cut two lengths away
And as I danced around the hall, I heard the people say
And as I danced around the hall, I heard the people say...
You're losing them, you're losing them,
   Pick up your trousers high,
Whose are they, whose are they?
My God what a terrible size.
Whose are they, whose are they?
My God what a terrible size.
