Subject: BS: Snark Hunting Banned in Alabama
From: GUEST,Bee-dubya-ell
Date: 23 Feb 05 - 11:35 AM

After years of public debate, the State of Alabama has banned the use of tracking dogs in the hunting of Snarks. This legislation is quite notable since there are no recorded Snark sightings within Alabama nor, for that matter, the entire Southeast.

When asked for comment upon this apparent paradox, State Representative Wiley "Clem" Bodine responded, "All uh more reason t' ban dawg-huntin' fer 'em. If one uh them Snarks ever does show up here we shore don't want nobody turnin' a buncha Walker Hounds loose on it an' tearin' it t' shreds! Whut kinda trophy wud it be then, all tore up an' fulla holes?"

Wiley noted that the ban applies strictly to hunting using dogs. It is still perfectly legal to hunt Snarks from tree-stands, back porches and pickup trucks. For that matter, it is legal to hunt them using packs of cats, goats or any other domesticated animal.

It is expected that the Alabama ban will be a minor boon for Snark-hunting clubs in neighboring states as avid Snark hunters trek across state lines to pursue their hobby.

Well, dang, we kin still hunt 'em with dogs here in Idaho. Ain't no season on 'em, neither, nor boojums either. Ain't nothin' like settin' round a campfire, drinkin' a little rye, tellin' a couple er six lies, and lissenin' to them snark hounds a-singin' off over the mountain. With a full moon risin' and makin' diamonds outa the snow it's plumb poetical.

I represent the Toy Hunting Dog Association of Alabama. Our association is seeking an exemption to the Snark dog-hunting ban in cases where the dogs in question weigh less than four pounds each, with an aggregate weight per pack of less than fifty pounds. We feel that, while the legislature may be justified in banning the use of large hunting hounds to track Snarks, banning the use of toy dogs while allowing the use of cats is both illogical and unfairly favors cat owners.

There are thousands of Alabamians who enjoy nothing greater that the yapping of a pack of well-trained Chihuahuas, Pomeranians or Dandie Dinmont Terriers hot on the trail of the elusive Snark. We would hate to have to drive to Mississippi to pursue our avocation.

NY restricts hunting snark with dogs to the 24 hours following a blue moon.

However - stalking them afoot with vorpal blades is allowed anytime as long as your bag does not exceed two snark in any 3 month period.

Although sightings have been reported here in New Brunswick, there is no confirmed evidence to suggest that The Great Northern Snark's range is much beyond Maine. However, due to the recent asymtotic change in habitat from Acadian Old Growth forest to New England Boreal Forest caused by heavy lumbering without adequate modern sylviculture enforcement, the arrival of the Great Northern Snark and like species is only a matter of time, the schedule of which is anyone's guess.

The DNRE, Department of Natural Resources and Energy, has indicated it will not allow a Snark season until their presence is confirmed by Department biologists and research studies have established the overall health and stability of the Snark population over time, ensuring a viable and sustainable hunt.

When contacted for comment, the NBAR's, New Brunswick Association of Rednecks, say they welcome anything new to supplement the local diet. NBAR's Chief Spokesman, Dale, is quoted as saying, "If she's brown, she's down. I like to eat - you like to eat? I don't got no fancy green uniform and no big government salary. You like to eat? I like to eat."

Safari International, the Longhunter Society, Boone & Crockett, and Pope and Young have all established minimum requirements for both snark and boojum, pending approval by the respective memberships. The Longhunter Society, for example, has defined length, breadth, height, and both intermediate and advanced temporal parameters for snark and/or boojum taken with a rifled matchlock weapon greater than .69 caliber, while Pope & Young require both spatial AND temporal parameters as well as the use of a longbow with a draw weight of at least 110 pounds drawn to the cheek and an arrow of at least 31 inches spined appropriately for the bow -- explosive heads are, of course, forbidden.

By way of clarification, the Alabama Department of Huntin' an' Fishin' has released a statement to the effect that the Snark-hunting ban should not be construed as a ban on hunting the closely related Boojum. The statement says, in part, "Boojums is mean-assed critters an' ya kin hunt them sumbitches wid whutever ya want. Dawgs iz good. Gators iz better. Fully-automatic rifles, portable rocket launchers, an' dynamite-filled booby-traps iz even better. An 'em folks whut likes t' hunt Snark wif them li'l bitty dawgs like Cheewawas an' such orta jus' leave them li'l guys at home 'cause a Boojum'll be eatin' a cuppla them fer breckfust."

Wild snark may be enticed within range with soap...a process called 'charming', but do NOT use modern scented soap, as this will enrage them, and require excess use of railway shares! Unscented Ivory is best, if you have no plain, homemade soap. Tie the soap in a mesh bag and hang it from your belt for easy access, as you will not enjoy digging through backpacks if a snark appears suddenly.

Shocking news indeed from Alabama as the Snark has long been held in high regard as the epitome of hunting trophies. Boojums of course are in a minor league as their entrapment can be brought about by simple means such as using shattered underpants as bait.

It is a little known fact that Snark hunting was originally started by English settlers in c1694. Back here in England they had habitually hunted the Bogget (a cross between a Badger and Rabbit) which roamed the Midland counties and was a shy and elusive quarry. As soon as they had established themselves in the New Country (or Colonies as we call them)they looked for something to do on their days off and decided that Snark hunting was the thing for them. Fox hunting was the sport of the aristocracy, Bogget hunting the sport of the hoi polloi and underclasses.

It is still practised in my native Northamptonshire to a degree, although catches are few since the widening of the A45 and the resultant heavy traffic. I have devoted much time in investigating this sport and the rituals associated with it, and in due course hope to publish a pamphlet of my findings.

I would urge my American friends to record all knowledge of Snarking whilst it is still in the minds of men and before it is lost forever. Maybe a small theme park funded by the estimable Mr Disney and National Geographic might be in order.

Snipe hunting is a different matter all together, since snipes (PICTURE HERE) do occur in Alabama.

However, the practice of hunting snipes at night using a flashlight and a burlap bag is totally bogus. Snipe are best hunted in broad daylight using a shotgun. However, chasing through the woods at night with a flashlight and a burlap bag is an excellent way to capture Trombicula alfreddugesi (PICTURE HERE), more commonly known as "chiggers", which, pound for pound, are a whole lot nastier than any Snarks or Boojums ever thought about being.

The Idaho Fishing Game people just reported that a guy up around Sandpoint way shot a world-trophy boojum just last week. Unfortunately, he ran over to the body aforen the critter was quite dead and softly and silently vanished away as he was sticking his fingers down the critter's throat.

Here's a picture the Fishing Game people released; it was taken by the guy's hunting pardner just before the whole bunch vanished.

That's prone to happen around Snarks and Boojums, Clint. Here one minute, gone the next.

And, Carol, those are not Snarks. Please reread the first post to this thread. There are no recorded sightings of Snarks in Alabama. Just like there are no recorded sightings of panthers/cougars here in northwest Florida even though lots of people, myself included, have seen them. They're just oversize bobcats with long tails or something. Perhaps what you think are Snarks are mutant coyotes.

And, if you think it's a mess around here now, ya shoulda been here in September and October.

Moreover, if you will check out the only correct illustration of a Jabberwock you will immediately see the relationship between that, a boojum, and and snark.

Indeed, several extinguished scientists have attempted to classify these by genus and species, but all were extinguished during their labors.

many biologists are now of the opinion that Boojums, snarks and jabberwocks are different life stages of the same organism. They haven't quite agreed whether there is an alternation of generation thing going on or if possibly a metamorphosis but most do agree that boojums occur in both an aquatic form that is typically mobile - and a non-aquatic form which may or may not be sessile. Posible the sessile land form is a boojum entering into pupation.

You lot of inbred colonials obviously know bollocks about Snark hunting. There are only a handful of approved sporting methods used in a proper Snark hunt. One may seek it with thimbles. One may seek it with care. One may pursue it with forks and hope. One may threaten its life with a railway-share. One may charm it with smiles and soap. One may not assault it with AK-47s, RPGs or dynamite-laden booby-traps!

The New Brunswick Minister of the DNRE, Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, as it is called this Thursday, has just held a press conference at which he said he was extremely upset that yesterday's Federal budget contained no funding for Environment Canada which would allow the The Canadian Wildlife Service to participate in the necessary field research to determine the advance of the Great Northern Snark's range into Atlantic Canada. He called upon the other Atlantic Canadian Ministers to join him in pressing the Federal Government to honour it's funding committment promised at the last round table discussion held by the CCME, Canadian Coucil of Ministers of the Environment. In calling for solidarity, the Minister reminded the other Atlantic Canada Ministers that New Brunswick is the "hub" for ground transportation, and, "If we get Snarks, you get Snarks." As well, he reminded Central and Western Ministers that this year's round table discussioin just might get a bit snarky, but declined to elaborate further.

New brunswick Association of Rednecks, NBARs, spokesman, Dale, said he and the boys questioned why the Minister appeared apprehensive about the expansion of the Great Northern Snark's range and were informed of the possibility of rabies existing within the Snark population. In response, Dale issued the following news release. "God damned government. Them fuckers just want an excuse to have another meetin at some big fancy resort at the taxpayers expense. And they won't be out lookin fer Snarks. They'll be winin and dinin and playin golf at one a them government sudsidized courses, on MY dime. Them sum bitches like to eat? I like to eat. They can have their meetin at my camp. We'll get some Snarks from my cousin Dayle in the States and cook the rabies out of em. Just like we cook the toolareamea and cadmeeum outta the rest a the critters around here. I like to eat. You like to eat?"

leeneia - don't forget that snark hunting in most of Europe and the British Isles** has become an effete and much regulated sport of the elite. This of course is only possible because the European Snark is so much smaller and milder in temper then are any of the New World species of snark

Well! It's about time someone drug Hull pitching and screaming into this mess. It was inevitable, seeing that Hull is one of the few places in the entire world where you can get a good bowl of Curried Snark with Chutney or a nice dish of Boojum Vindaloo with Rice. Not only are the Snark-hunting techniques used in Hull not effete, they're downright brutish. They have to be to keep the curry shops adequately stocked with fresh Snark steak and Boojum burger.

On a related note, rumour has it that the infamous Hull-based Irish band "Punch the Horse" will be changing their name to "Slap the Snark".

MISSILE TYPE:

SM-62, S/N 57-0005, SNARK

SIGNIFICANCE OF TYPE : The Northrop Snark (SM-62) was an Intercontinental Cruise Missile (ICM), the only weapon of its type to be deployed in the strategic role by any nation. (The Germans had a development program for such a missile, designated A-10, during World War II.) Sn ark development began in 1946 and flight test vehicles began flying in 1951. In essence, the Snark was a pilotless bomber with a high-altitude, subsonic (615-mph) flight profile. Compared to contemporary bomber aircraft, the Snark offered low investment a nd operating costs, a small radar cross section, and a relatively large warhead. A major Snark development was planned. The first missile was declared operationally ready at Presque Isle AFB, Maine, on 18 March 1961. However, less that four months later , on 25 June 1961, the Snark force was deactivated, having been made obsolescent by the large U.S. strategic bomber and missile programs.

The missile had a long, sleep configuration with swept-back wings and a vertical fin stabilizer without any horizontal tail surfaces. Its guidance was self-contained, pre-set with inertial updating and thus unjammable. It had turbojet propulsion with two solid-propellant boosters for "zero-length" launching. As the missile approached the target the warhead was ejected from the airframe, achieving an ultimate velocity of about Mach 1 (the airframe would then begin to tumble and break up).

The KGB where probably hunting the snark for many years!

Yep, Cletus, them B-62 Snarks ain't much good fer eatin'. Onliest part's any good is th' wings. An' even then ya gotta bleed 'em real good afore ya skin 'em 'cause they got tanks fulla jet fuel an' hydraulic fluid thet'll make ya sick. It ain't hardly worth th' trouble. 'Cause ya still got thet big ol' body thet ain't no good fer nuthin' an ya gotta dig a hole t' bury it in. Ya cain't burn 'em. Some ol' boys over Opelika way set one of 'em on fire once an' now they's jus' a big hole where thet part uh th' county useta be.

Dale's got some questions on them there specs : Span: 12 ft. 2 in. , Length: 42 ft. 6 in. , Height: 9 ft. 4 in. , Weight: 10,147 lbs. ,
Armament: Thermonuclear Warhead , Engine: One Pratt & Whitney J52 , turbojet of 7,500 lbs. , Cost: $609,073 , Crew: None

Does that $609,073 include freight, license and PDI? And a full tank of gas? Do they take trade-ins?

I know a guy who's got a bunch of 'em and he'll let 'em go pritty cheap. You gotta go up to Corn Creek and haul 'em out yourself, though.

Fully jacked; 33" Mudders; triple roll bars; five front and five back roll bar mounted Day-Lites (250,000 candles each - you can light up the whole 600 miles with them), box mounted fuel tank (well, it's a plastic five gallon gas can, on accounta tearin a big hole in the gas tank); just-installed 1/4" skid plate from bumper to bumper; front and rear 10,000 pound winches with 100 feet of cable each (you can hoist the truck and all yer gear up a tree and use it as a tree stand for huntin or for just havin a look see or for when the wardens are bein persistant); 4000 pound box mounted winch; front and rear trailer hitches; fold-down tail gate ramp; sealed doors and firewall for fishin IN the beaver dams; tinted windows and hand painted dark green matte finish over the entire vehicle so there's no sun or search light glint; bush bar with headlight screens; twenty foot fold-down whip antenna with coon tail; CB and scanner; and, the license plates are mounted upside down - every second counts. Oh yeah, there's three more trucks for spare parts.

Dale's offerin the whole shootin match plus $9,073, Canadian, and a full tank of gas. But, if it's still "NOT", d'ya know anyone with an

Ya'll got Dreaded Swamp Donkeys up there in Canadee? Hot damn! Useta have 'em down 'ere in Floribama but they went an' drained mosta th' swamps an' th' Swamp Donkeys moved on. We wuz wunnerin' where they went. Closest thing to 'em that's still aroun' here is 'em Bad-ass Bayou Burros over in Louisiana. But them an' th' Swamp Donkeys don' git along too good. An' there's th' Ornery Okeefenokee Onagers over in Georgia, but they's a pertected species an' ya cain't shoot 'em no more so who cares?

I thought swamp donkeys were extinct? I could have sworn the International Journal of Declining Species reported the last specimen (a aged female named Bayou Belle) died last spring.

Rapaire neglected to mention that the "Hodag" subspecies of Snark has been domesticated. In some areas the police use trained Hodags instead of work dogs like German Shepards and Labradors. When an officer works with a trained Hodag his cruiser is emblazoned with a Hodag emblem so citizens will be aware that a potentially dangerous Hodag is in the car. Like this one.
