Cologne has had a couple of dustings, but we haven't seen real snow here since the mid eighties. The temperature has stayed just around freezing point for a couple of weeks now. We got enough snow one evening last week, that I took two excited kids outside to spend half an our looking at the stuff from close up. It was mainly gone the next morning. You can see snow in Germany, but usually you would have to go to special places like the Harz Mountains, Bavaria, parts of Baden Würtmeburg, the Eifel and to some extent Bergisches Land (to the East of Cologne). Snow is a rare visitor to most of the rest of us. Mind you, the forecast says that it will be cold over this weekend. So I may be able to report a rare happening in the near future!

I'm not quite in the Methuselah class with regard to my age. Date of birth 16/12/57. Actually, you might have spotted that I was 2 years old in 1960.

Some of the session players I know do remember 1947. By all accounts, we young 'uns are so soft, we'd all just curl up and die if another winter like that one hit us.

Just done the school run, and London looks pretty, pretty, pretty. Only a couple of inches on the ground, but enough to make it look magical. The trees are gorgeous. It's a novelty here and the kids are going to be sledging in the park after school.

Hopefully any one who can get out and about should knock on at least a couple of neighbours doors and see if shopping etc needed. Especially the older folks...it's slippy out there.

Glossop held the UK record for depth of snow last night - 25cm, or 10 inches. Shin-deep, certainly. My street, which is a very steep slope, is an excellent piste. Main roads across the Peak District intermittently blocked by drifts and incompetent drivers.

At last Monday's session the talk was about notorious hard winters in the UK. 1981-82, my father and I walked across the frozen River Ouse just north of York. 1962-63, I remember someone driving a Mini across the Thames near Reading. A very early memory, 1959-60; I was barely two years old. My Grandfather started clearing the snow from a garden in Port Talbot. I helped him with, I think, an ice-cream scoop. Progress was slow, because my grandfather stopped to light a pipe and photograph my efforts.

A few veterans amongst us remembered 1847-48, when temperatures slowly fell in late February and light snow began; the temperature kept going down, and while there wasn't ever much snow, it didn't go away; there was still snow on the ground in July.

Well it's looking very pretty outside as I sit here at the computer. Snow is drifting down steadily and fairly heavily in big white flakes. I just managed to rid myself of my horrible grown-up reaction of "OH no! More snow! Bad roads...mess...cold...etc" and went back to thinking "Isn't it beautiful! Is it settling? I wonder if I could build a snowman this afternoon. Ooooh isn't it FUN????"

Scotland is not living up to it's cold and snowy reputation. I do admit, I'm in Edinburgh, so on the coast and not too horribly North. It snowed yesterday for the second time this winter, and unlike last time yesterday it actually stuck! It was incredibly exciting. Now it's mostly melted and everything is yucky mushy sludgy dirty mush. I desire more snow. I'm from Southern California, it doesn't snow there. Snow is very exciting.

Well, gregster, yer favorite dinking and smoking spot in Wes Ginny is covered in about 4 inches of snow as the snow continues to fall... We are expecting another 4 inches before it quits 'round 1:00 tomorrow morning... But the bird feeders are all filled, I got cold beer on the front porch, the P-Vine is cookin' up a possum caserole, so life is good...

I'm currently reading NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND by Bill Bryson, and one of the funniest parts is when he discribes a snowfall in East Anglia... 1 to 2 inches of snow with drifts 6 inches high!

It seems that people were up to their ankles in snow! LOL

By the by, it is a very interesting read.

Just think, with a light dusting of snow even Stoke might become momentarily pretty - no, scrub that - impossible!
Although about 40 or 50 feet of snow might do it.

Finally seems to have stopped in Sheffield after 18 hours of snow. But often not very heavy. And mostly fairly wet.

Our problem is hills of course and all you need is one idiot on each of half a dozen roads and the city becomes blocked. Fortunately that doesn't seem to have happened much.

From my home looking straight out towards the Royal at Dungworth it is getting clearer all the time and hardly a vehicle moving. The kids have been off school and I have had chance to re-do a crashed computer.

Must stop relying on these damned things.

The snow is Twelve foot high here in Sunny Hull. I had to climb up the chimney to get out of my house this morning. I then had to break through my office roof to get at my computer.

Portland is having a pretty "open" winter then, isn't it jacqui?

We had about 4 inches of new snowfall yesterday - but it's melted off the roads - enough to freshen up the remainder from previous snowfalls so that it's white and pretty instead of grungy.

The last snowfall on Monday/Tuesday gave about eight inches of snow in the Portland area. That was on top of the snow still remaining from the previous storms in January. The sky is a bright blue and temperatures are a little chilly, right now, in a sheltered spot, it's 10F, and I'm glad I bought boots out with me, but the snow looks lovely for the main part, all white and sparkly.

Because snow is just a part of life here the roads are clear, we had snow ploughs up and down our side street about half a dozen times on Monday. Where the ploughs have pushed the snow off the road there are drifts in front yards up to 5 foot deep.

Kendall tells me that Spring is called the Mud Season, as the thaw begins and all that snow starts to melt.......

It's been a relatively light winter in southern Ontario. That means I still have places to pile snow from off the drive, deck, front steps, etc. Kids have had a couple of snow days off school, and there's been some ice, and the bride has driven through some dicey near-white-outs returning from work. Mild spells have made ice fishing uneasy. All in all though, not a bad season. I've had my share of winter driving horrors.

Woke up to a pretty light dusting of the stuff, that's all.

I drove from Maidstone to Faversham last night to see James Keelaghan, Hugh Mc Millan and Jane Clark. The forecast was horrible, but it was no problem going or returning. What a wonderful night it was too, I'm so glad I made the decision. It's snowing here in Kent still at 11:15am, but it's not difficult getting around. We're such wimps when it comes to a little snow.

Well, in Stoke-on-trent(England) it snowed last night, and there is a modest covering on the trees and grass. The roads, while you need to be cautious, are generally passable. The temperature, though by no means warm, is not freezing either. So how is it with you? Let's hear something impressive from the Scottish or Canadians or something.
