Here's one version. Note that in tese verses it is butterbeans, a southern name for lima beans.

NH dave, Butterbeans are a small, tender version of Lima beans, which tend to be tough and tasteless. Very hard to find here in Canada, but sometimes found frozen in small packages (about enough for two bowls).
Fresh Okra has come here since we have received immigrants from the Middle East, but, having lived in the south, we lament the scarcity of butterbeans.

In UK it's the Lima beans that are small and tender (and quite rare) while the butterbeans are the huge, tough ones.

Snuffy, a UK seed company used by many people over here advertises something called the Henderson's Bush Baby Lima bean which is small, yellowish when fresh and buttery in taste. This may be the butterbean of the southern US. I haven't tried them but they 'sound' about right. Is this what you are referring to?
Also in their list is a Burpee Lima bean which they say is "huge." This is probably the kind called a 'Lima' bean in the south.

As a Southerner and also a pretty darn good cook, please allow me to clear up some of this discussion. There are butter peas, which are a field pea that seems like a cross between lima bean and a black eyed pea. And there are butterbeans which are small tender lima beans. Down here in SW Georgia, the dried Fordhooks are called lima beans. They are about the size of a nickle but shaped like a kidney. Not to be confused with kidney beans of course.

Everybody has different names for vegetables!
My wife (from Georgia) pointed out to me that the small, almost round limas are called butterpeas in her mother's family but that most of her father's relatives called them butterbeans.
I was only partly right (or partly wrong). She ruled out the Hendersons I mentioned above.
Found the seed advertised as "Dixie White Butterpea Bean" by Cooper Seeds of Georgia. Unfortunately they won't grow in our cold climate.

Tim, go to the top of this thread and click on the first link. Scan down for the last comment by "Big Byrd". There are a set of lyrics that have been "added" to the song. Byrd first learned the lyrics (first three verses) from Jimmy Driftwood. He added the rest.

Butterbeans are a large, flat, kidney-shaped bean with wonderful rich flavor. Well cooked and seasoned with ham or ham hock there exists nothing better to eat in this world!
