Subject: What instruments do you have?
From: GUEST,MBSLynne
Date: 27 Feb 05 - 02:42 PM

Just looking round our house I was amazed at the number and variety of different musical instruaments we have. What have you got? We've got: a baby grand piano, two electric guitars and an accoustic, five mandolins, six recorders, a fife, a flute, an oboe, a French horn, a penny whistle, three ocarinas, three didgeridoos, a bodhran, four post horns, a Tibetan dragon horn, various assorted percussion thingies including a triangle, shakey eggs and maracas, two kazoos and a number of odd bits and pieces that have been bought for the kids over the years. There may well be other things I haven't thought of. Phew!

Love Lynne

A guitar, banjo, accordian, several tin whistles, an Apalachian Dulcimer, set of parlor bagpipes, a Saw Ooo(Thai two stringed fiddle),a set of spoons and a Khaen(Thai red harmonica).

I suppose this might be a time for a yard sale, but I think I'll keep on accumulating for a while.

8 djembe drums {traditional African drums]and
numerous other traditional African drums big and small,a number of balafons {wooden xylophones with gourd resonators],
several sekeres [gourd percussive, shaking instrument with beads strung around the outside; guord rattles, finger pianos, koras [banjo-like instuments]; washboard like instrument from Kenya with beads inside that you shake {and a couple of more such instruments that I don't know the name of]
& agogos [cow bells], and a tamborine from Egypt

and
numerous maracas
[all these used for interactive children's presentations; the only ones that I half-way know how to play are the rattles/maracas]

Oh yes, I also have an acoustic guitar in my bedroom closet that once upon a time I thought I would learn how to play.

I never did...

The ones I play: a Bart Reiter "Regent" 5 string banjo, a Saga banjeurine, a Gibson tenor guitar, a Cort 6 string guitar, a Regal dobro, many harmonicas, an Oscar Schmidt autoharp, a Goldtone Dojo, which is a resophonic guitar body with a 5 string banjo neck.

The ones I sometimes play - a hammered dulcimer, two accordians, many recorders, tin whistles, ocarinas.

the ones I never play: a busted Stella tenor guitar, a no-name tenor banjo, a no-name 5 string from the late 1800's that I'll get a new neck for someday, a Majestic tenor banjo that was converted to a 5 string before I bought it and used to be my main instrument but now suffers from extreme old age, a Hohner concertina that has a busted reed, a toy Cajun-style accordian that I bought at Cracker Barrel,
a Lynn McSpadden dulcimer that has a seriously bowed fingerboard that I keep meaning to send back to Lynn for repairs, a bowl-backed mandolin, a banjo-uke, a regular uke, a set of bagpipes made in Pakistan that I can't play without getting dizzy - free to a good home if anyone wants them, they're parlor pipes. PM me if you're interested.

Probably other stuff that I can't think of off hand.

Oh, yeah, a thumb piano and a set of pan pipes.

and in addition to the above, a fife and two bamboo flutes, a nose flute, and a duck call that I use with my band as an occasional novelty. And a tongue drum. And a psaltery and a zitheresque instrument that I have no name for.

I really have to stop myself.

Hey great, RangerSteve! You have a finger piano!!
I'm sure you play it better than me...

Oh yeah-I have some pan pipes too
and some wooden flutes
and some flutaphones or whatever you call those plastic instruments that are used in school to teach music to kids

and I have an old upright piano that's very much out of tune
{how could I forget that?}

plus I collect brass bells, but I don't really think of them as instruments...

Forgot the uke. It's a cheap piece of patched together crap, but it can be fun. Wish I had a good one. Should just build one.

Raptor...The trick is to find a great builder before the prices go through the roof, or beyond the buyer's budget. In my case I found Marc Beneteau when he was less known, but still very experienced in the craft, but I can't afford him today. I haven't had a moment's regret. Same with Josh House (www.house-guitars.com). He's refining his art and getting better all the time, so I bought while I could.

Every year I tell myself I'm gonna spring for a Peter Cox instrument...maybe this year.

Peace, Mooh.

Books, Lynne?

When I moved house last, there were 3.5 tons of books, according to the removal men. At least one full height whole-wall bookcase in every room, including the hall, stairs landing and half landing (but not kitchen or bathroom!).

Two years on, in a bigger house, there is at least one full-wall bookcase in every room (two more rooms, and bigger rooms overall, plus two bookcases on the stairs half landing) and many of them have books two-deep because I've run out of space.

My better half and I counted up last night - we each have about 25 books which we have not read!

I'm not in the league with most of the posters here, but here's our list:

6 foot Steinway grand piano (My Beautiful Wife's pride and joy!)
Yamaha electronic keyboard
Ramsey Special 5-string banjo
Kent 5-string banjo
A no-name baritone uke
Montana M-16-4 classical guitar
Lee Oskar "C" harmonica
(which I've more or less given up trying to learn to play.)
An English guitar (cittern) Note: That's not "a Spanish-type guitar made in England", but a pear-shaped, flat-front-and-back six-nylon-string "English guitar", tuned EADGBE). I bought this as a "travel guitar".

Wow! That's several more than I'd thought of off the top of my head!

Of the above, only the piano, the Ramsey banjo, and the classical guitar get regular use.

One Heintzman "cabinet grand" piano, originally property of my grandparents, built about 1900

One Giannini (sp?) nylon-strung craviola guitar, built about 1975

One Peter Cox steel-strung small-body fiddle-shaped guitar, built about 2002

One Kentucky KM-260 mandolin, acquired at Christmas

Two bodhrans, one on the wall because it needs a new goat, the other a nice oak-framed item that my husband should play more

Two recorders, one soprano (1964) and one alto (1968)

One digeridoo, a gift to my non-plussed husband from my brother

The only thing I can play well is the bones! And I still need more practice with them!

I'm afraid to count but here goes:

the real instruments:
2 Guitars (Alvarez starter, Martin 000-15s)
3 Appalacian dulcimers (no-name, McSpadden, Folkroots baritone)
2 Mandolins (bowl-back, 1919 Gibson A)
3 Flutes (Gemeindhart student, Tipple PVC, Sweetheart rosewood)
6 Recorders (Sopranino, 2 Sopranos, 3 Altos - one nice, nice Tenor)
6 Whistles (4 irish type, one bamboo and 1 slide - that should go in the silly category))
1 Yamaha Digital Piano
1 Clavichord (built by my husband's dad nearly 40 yrs ago)
25 Harmonicas (including a chromatic set of Golden Melodies)

and the silly stuff:

3 Ocarinas
4 Jew's Harps
1 Bodhran
1 Washboard w. thimbles
1 Tambourine
1 Hammered dulcimer, hand made w. no bass strings
1 Bugle (one is enough!)
3 Kazoos
3 Shakey eggs (they seem to multiply)
1 pr Wooden Catspaw spoons
1 deer claw rattle

and the comment about too many books also holds true -- except that we do have a large bookcase in the kitchen, for cookbooks of course.

Err...now let me think!:

Guitars: 6 (Lakewood Custom M-18, Regal RC-1, "no-name" jazz archtop, Paul Belgrado custom solid electric, old Antoria classical, 1890s French parlour guitar used exclusively for slide
Mandolin: 1 (Gideon Weigert, Nottingham, UK)
Octave mandolin (or mandola, depending which side of the pond): 1 (Terry Docherty, Newcastle, UK)
Piano: 1 (Upright Zimmerman, Germany)
Mountain dulcimer: 1 (French, handmade...can't remember the maker offhand)
Fiddle: 1 (old, probably German)
Bass: 1 (electric, Cort)
Latin percussion set (congas, bongos and multifarious assorted percussion pieces): 1 (mostly Meinl plus Oxfam Fair Trade)
Djembe: 1 (Ivory Coast)
Wooden D flute: 1 (Belgian, Riccardo Von Vittorelli)
D whistle: 1 (Chieftain)
Balalaika 1: (bought in Moscow, late 60s)
Harmonicas: several (all Hohner)
Mouth-blown "Thai organ" (no laughing please): 1

Amps: 4 (Trace acoustic, Laney acoustic, Behringer bass, Torque 30W practice amp))

Plus of course all the cases and containers of the above:

There may once have been (in fact, definitely were) far more but marital continuity and house repairs dictated reluctant disposal thereof!

is that "have" in the carnal sense?

like most people who've been playing since the dawn of time, I have too many musical instruments. The problem is you get sod all for them when you trade them in. and if you get rid of one, you invariably find a use for it the week after you've sold it for half its value.

if we get invaded by aliens who can be placated by gifts of musical instruments - all my acqisitions will prove to have been wise investments - otherwise I look at all this stuff and I think - what an idiot!

love the lists by MBSLynne and Azizi ...

I like electric blues so I play Gibson guitars (go figure) ... but I bought the Gibsons because they were representative of models that were unusual (sort of) for Gibson:

1. Gibson Firebird (only neck-thru-body that Gibson makes)
2. Gibson Les Paul DC plus (only 24 fret neck Gibson makes)
3. Gibson SG Classic (for the P-90 pickups)
4. Rickenbacker 650 Dakota (for the "Rick" sound and neck-thru-body tone)
5. Epiphone GS-400 Custom (for 'experimental' purposes i.e. changing out pickups; upgrading tuners; etc...bought it mostly for the neck and body)
6. Epiphone Wildkat (for hollow-body rockabilly and the Bigsby tremolo)
7. Washburn 7-string (forget the model - GS7 or something ...for 7-string explorations...pretty decent guitar for el cheapo price)
8. Guild D-4 (for acoustic playing)
9. Cheap Hondo classical guitar (for nylon)
10. Kramer acoustic/electric (for mobility ...practice sessions on the go)

Ye gods - I thought I was bad!
Several Rahma descant recorders, plus sopranino and Aulos piccolino, and when I find them, treble and tenor as well.
2 Susato high D whistles, one low D Susato, and a crap Clarke tin whistle.
Tabor pipes - one Susato, one unidentifiable and probably unplayable.
Antoria mandolin.
100 year old 11 inch head mandolin banjo.
Mandolin balalaika - beware, if I get that out I'm going to sing!
Panpipes.
Pianica and melodica, and D and G harmonicas.
Fluier.
Portable keyboards.
M'bira (or calimba - not quite sure which if any difference).
Tenor banjo.
Derbuka, djembe and dumbek.
Soprano drum.
11 inch snare drum, and full size snare drum.
2 bodhrans (when I get one back!).
Temple blocks, wood block, claves, eggs, sleigh bells, etc.
Ordinary tambourines, and sort of baritone tambourine.
Tuneable tabors.
Autoharp (in bits, I'm afraid).
Fandur.
Sort of gourd shaped thing with finger board and four strings.
Flat box thingy with 12 strings - shaped like zither, but more palm size.
Bb and A clarinets.
Ocarina (full size).
Strange thing with a mouthpiece on one little tube and finger holes on a bigger tube.
Another strange thing - all one piece but with two tubes with finger holes on them. Doesn't seem to work...
Whistle thing supposedly in D (comes from India, I think, and seems to have finger holes burned into it - very cheap from market).
Gong (three foot across).
Kazoos.
Swannee whistle (cheap and nasty).
Fife (out on loan).
[0 (zero) guitars or pianos.]

The music shops must be making a good living, judging by Mudcatters! My treasures are paltry next to some of the above. I have:

1 Martin 1971 12fret D35S, acoustic
1 Conn guitar, acoustic
1 Washburn guitar, acoustic (Kept in Oregon for visits there)
1 Dobro resonator guitar, 1974 (Acquired last week, just learning)
1 fiddle
1 mandolin (inherited from my brother when he died)
1 bodhran
1 Mountain Dulcimer
1 5string banjo
1 autoharp
1 pennywhistle
2 harmonicas
1 keyboard

I think that's it. Room for lots more.

1 octave mandolin
2 fiddles
1 open-back (for clawhammer) 5 string
2 electronic keyboards
1 hammer dulcimer
1 bowed psaltery
3 penny whistles

Since my last post, I have made a washtub bass, using a really heavy hickory grub hoe handle and various metal fittings - Gail's going to play it when we perform at the local neursing home for National Nursing Home Week in May (are they trying to drive the residents out?) I've also bought a harmonica harness, so I can play the mouth harp at the same time as the guitar.

Kendall,
Yeah, I thought about that too. In fact, I almost posted: "OK, now. Please post your address and your work schedule." But then I realized that it probably wasn't as funny as I first thought.

Actually, though, no one on the Net would know who we really are or where we lived, would they? Unless they had already established some form of real contact. And then we would know who the thief was. Besides, we are spread all over the world. Likely not near a potential thief who probably sent us another "Nigerian Bank" email just minutes ago.

Anyway,

4 6-strings, various affordable models (NOT Loudon or Martin)
2 12-strings,
2 autoharps,
5 or 6 recorders,
one train whistle,
one harmonica,
and one small amp, suitable for small-ish venues.
Oh, and spoons. Got to have spoons to stir my coffee and eat my ice cream. Couldn't play them if my life depended on it.

And no one knows who I am or where I live. ;-)

The aforementioned Godin 5 string bass became a fretless a few months ago when I pulled the frets and filled the slots with ebony veneer. I haven't gotten around to removing the position dots yet.

Also added a Godin LG electric guitar with humbuckers to the collection because I sold a Strat and an Ernie Ball recently and the Tele was getting lonely.

The House acoustic has two side ports and less bracing than it was born with and it sounds bigger now.

Looking at a Gibson A9 mandolin lately...can't...stop...myself...

Peace, Mooh.

Lots of recorders (Hopf Renaissance types, Kung tenor and greatbass, a Mollenhauer Kynseker G alto, an unnamed German-fingering A soprano, a Mollenhauer Dream soprano, a Scott wooden F alto, Susato G sopranino and G alto plastics, a Lee Collins Zen-On F alto, a Yamaha green plastic soprano, an unnamed purple glittery plastic soprano in C sharp, lots of plastic altos and sopranos which I intend to donate to a children's music initiative in Palestine shortly, along with an assortment of whistles I never use)

A Turkish G clarinet and an old Czech clarinet in C sharp

An alto flute, a wooden flute and a Boehm C flute

An electronic pipe chanter with various computer speakers to play it through

Three Italian-type ocarinas

An ud, two cumbuses, a cobza, a Puerto Rican cuatro and a Black Sea fiddle

A small old six-bar diatonic autoharp designed for tunes in G, rearranged to play in two sharps for Scottish music

A one-octave chromatic set of chime bars designed for playing in E flat

A stylophone

Several gongs, two of them enormous, and a bunch of small bells

A def, a darbuka, a homemade conga-like drum and a bunch of African cowhide drums

A battered old chromatic button accordion I'm just starting on

Several 8-foot-register organ pipes I am intending to make into something someday

Several children's percussion instruments

About a dozen washboards - one I use every week, the others are intended to be given away in pursuit of my aim to convert the world to the Lost Art of Ancient Scottish Washboard Playing

Several rucksacks used to cart combinations of the above round to folk sessions by public transport

This all seems surprisingly normal after seeing other people's lists.

Wow! What a collection of instruments folks on here have . . .so, I guess I can fit in:

2 harpsichords, mountain dulcimer, balalaika, Vietnamese dan nhi, Eb clarinet, 5 Bb clarinets, C clarinet, Db clarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, bassoon, 2 C piccolos, C flute, Eb alto horn, Eb/F convertable horn, Eb fleugelhorn, shepherd's crook trumpet, rotary valve cornet, 2 trombones, french horn, tuba, snare drum, bass drum, various recorders and penny whistles, and a trunk full of percussion noise makers.

I'm in a community band, and most of the band instruments I own are used as temporary loaners to band members until they can get their own instrument. I will probably keep the harpsichords, stringed instruments, clarinets, oboe, and bassoon and donate all the rest to the band since they are used only within the community band anyway. Eu

A Musical Instrument Ditty

Jew's harps I have plenty,
And mouth-harps nearly 20,
A banjo-uke, a wooden uke,
And another one beside.
Guitars in numbers countless,
Amplified and not-so, doubtless,
Banjos of such quality it's
Impossible to hide.

Two dulcimers (that's overkill),
And autoharps (oh, there's a thrill),
Two fiddles and three mandolins, and an
Electric bass to boot.
Banjo-guitar and mandolin,
I think I'm getting near the end;
Not to mention cases, strings and straps --
Oh, what a hoot.

2 kanjiras

a few nondiscript frame drums
1 berimbau
3 washboards; 2 metal, one glass
1 udu
1 small gong
1 Earth Drum (paper drum made from recycled blue jeans)
1 set of high hat cymbals
1 Ice Bell (small high sustain cymbal)
1 vibra slap
1 thunder tube (spring drum)
1 flex-a-tone

and still no "real instruments"

Actually, my song wasn't specifically set to any song, but to the chorus of a Minstrel era song called, "Nothing to Wear," (the tune to which is unknown to me) where the woman in the chorus has

Bonnets she had plenty, and shawls could count by twenty,
Still her refrain, as she walked the city fair,
Was "I am tired of this duster, it puts me in a fluster
It's really too provoking; I've nothing to wear!"

It may well scan to the tune mentioned above, "Rambling Rover," but it was what I had in mind, somehow, when I started my list. I find I submitted a response back in the early days of this thread, but my recent response started as a list of my guitars and banjos, then I said, "Jew's harps I have in plenty," and my memory melded with my muse (how's that for alliteration?) and the lyric formed itself. I erased all the original listed instrument lines and incorporated them into the ditty.

3 tinwhistles

OK. You asked.

Acoustic Guitars:

1) 2003 Mario Proulx "OM-D." Englemann Spruce top (amberburst); Black Walnut back, sides and neck.

2) 2001 Froggy Bottom F-12 (0000 size, 12 frets to body, wide neck slothead. The guitar that Martin should build and won't.) Sitka Spruce top, Indian RW back and sides.

3) 1996 Collings 000-2H, Sitka/Indian. eBay purchase May, 2002. My usual "road" guitar for trio gigs.

4) Alvarez-Yairi Jumbo Baritone Acoustic (tuned B-to-b). New this past winter.

5) Martin SWM-GT. 0000 size, wide neck, Cherry back and sides; Sitka top (all solid woods).

6) Martin M-16GT. About a 2002, I believe. Sitka/Mahogany. $800. (Now living with my son in Bozeman. This largely bypasses the whole guitars-on-planes hassle.)

7) CA Acoustic "Legacy" Dreadnought. Purchased on eBay on a gamble. (Appears, from correspondence with the company, to be a very early prototype. It has an ebony fingerboard, and most of the CA's don't have any wood in them at all. It has a Schlecter pickup system, and CA says they only installed them in a few prototypes, not in any production guitars.)

8) Martin 000-X1. Standard Martin 14-fret 000 (but long scale) with linoleum back and sides and solid spruce top. Also a vastly better guitar than it has any right to be.

9) Epiphone "Masterbilt" EF-500R. Another recent eBay purchase.

10) Guild GAD-30R. Another recent eBay purchase.

11) "No-name" jumbo 7-string. Sitka and Indian; I think the back and sides are laminates. Now for sale if anyone's interested.

12) 1970s Guild D25M that I keep in Bozeman, Mt., unless my son has sold it - I told him to go ahead and do so if he could.

My wife owns a 1965 Martin 0-18, five or six fiddles (five here and one in Bozeman, I think), a Knilling "Jazz Bass" (thin-bodied upright bass, works as an acoustic in the living room or amplified for gigs), an autoharp, a hammered dulcimer, and a Guild acoustic bass guitar. We jointly own a Freshwater octave mandolin that needs some work. So she doesn't hassle me too much.

The reason there's so many is that we set aside our income from gigs for pure luxury spending, but most luxuries I might want depreciate too fast to justify spending money on them. So the default is spending it on instruments, which are like money in the bank but more fun.

Peter

I'm gonna show this thread to my wife. She swears I have more instruments than any sane person could own, but some of you guys put me to shame. To tell the truth, I have no idea how many I have. Oh, I could root around the house and get a rough idea but I am hampered by sciatica and indolence. Besides, I need lots of guitars, mandolins, tenor banjos, ukes and 5 string banjos in case a student needs a loaner. Of course, this doesn't explain why I need a jazz guitar, an autoharp, a potpouri of percussion and a half dozen amps.
Hey, if she can't take a joke.....

Peter (Midchuck),

If I'm not mistaken ~ that is, if I'm not confusing you with another Peter with another pseudonym ~ didn't you used to own one of those "lawsuit Takamines" that looked too much like a Martin D-18?

If so, I'm sorry you let it go. I've often fantasized about taking it off your hands someday, if the price was right-enough and I happened to be traveling in the North Country at a time that I had some disposable income available.

I only own the one instrument, a real D-18, vintage 1969. I've considered having a pickup installed, and at least one of our local technicians refuses to "desecrate" my lovely and valuable instrument in such a way. He advises me to just buy another cheaper guitar, either an electric-acoustic (from his stock, of course) or a straight acoustic into which he would more willingly install an under-saddle pickup.

Sure, it's just one man's opinion, but I find his argument at least somewhat persuasive. A nice "fake" D-18 with a pickup in it would be an interesting option for me. I guess I won't be getting one from you now, however.

Yep, I've had a couple or three of them. Gradually got away from dreads, (hurts to play them very long when you're short, old, and have a little beer gut), and really I prefer the 1 3/4" (or wider) at nut neck. So I let them go. They do have a great sound for the price, at least the solid-top ones. My son still has one that he prefers to some more expensive ones that he has, for most purposes.

I agree with him. In a really good acoustic setting, it's better to mic your guitar. In a not-so-good acoustic setting (read "bar") plugging in is the way to go, it cuts through the crowd noise better. But the sound isn't going to be as good in any event, and no one hearing you is going to be all that critical, so it's better to use an el cheapo for that purpose.

Unless you can find a nice old Guild D-25 or such as that.

Peter.

Thanks, Peter.

I like the sound of playing through a mic, but I think I would enjoy being able to move my arms/torso/guitar a bit more freely, which would be an important benefit of "plugging in." I find it easy enough to keep my mouth at the proper distance from the one mic ~ when singing ~ but I do occasionally have trouble keeping the guitar soundhole in just the right spot in relation to the second mic. I've even, on occasion, bumped into the guitar mic, actually touched it with strings of topwood, which makes an embarrassing noise, to say the least.

Also, I prefer to stand rather than sit when performing, if only as a way to keep my internal air-column open and unrestricted from diaphragm to lips; if I were a "sitter," I would probably find it easier to hold the guitar still.
