My church choir has asked me to find more gospel music- and they want something for Easter, which is coming right upon us soon. Any great ideas?

Thanks!

Allison

Were You There When They Crucified My Lord.

I did it in church last spring in key of F, accompanied my voice with a Mandolin-Banjo.

I would agree with 8ch(pl)'s selection of "Where you there". But I'm not sure if it is a gospel song. Actually, I'm not sure where spiritual and ends and gospel begins..

There are a number of new gospel songs, but since I don't read music or write it I don't know how to share them in a forum like this. It might be easier to say that any song that praises Jesus would be suitable for Easter..But then again "Where you there" is a sad song and it is definetly an Easter song..

I tried to find a list of Gospel songs on the Internet-Not as easy as I would have expected...I did find a website that selling lyrics to these songs that are listed below..I didn't check to see how many of them are in the African American Permathread..I'll put a question mark in parenthesis on the ones I don't know..and a star for the ones that I think might be suitable for Easter..

click here for the website to order these songs and the book..[Note: I haven't purchased any of these products, so can't vouch for them..]

"He Rose" is an Easter song that isn't included in that list. I also didn't see it listed in the Mudcat African American Spirituals Permathread. But I would call "He Rose" a spiritual and not a gospel song, but I'm not sure..

Chorus:
He rose [male voices:" He rose"]
He rose [He rose}
He row-ose from the dead.
He rose [He rose}
He rose [He rose]
He row-ose from the dead.
He rose [He rose}
He rose [He rose]
He row-ose from the dead.
And the Lord shall bear my spirit home.
{Repeat entire chorus]

Sister Mary she come runnin.
Ah looking for my Lord.
Sister Mary she come runnin.
Ah looking for my Lord.
Sister Mary she come runnin.
Ah looking for my Lor-ord
and the Lord shall bear my spirit home.

Chorus

{substitute name of other Sister___ and Brother____ who come runnin ah lookin for my Lord]
and end with the chorus..

****
I'm counting on Jerry, Susan and other 'Catters to recommend some gospel music-contemporary or otherwise.

Best wishes and much success in your search,
Azizi

"Just as the Evening Sun" is just about Easter. It's perfect for a choir. We sing the chorus in counterpoint. I'll send a copy of us singing it that way if you want, Allison. Three of us actually with the third voice singing harmony. It's a bit rough. Was recorded live after someone requested it so we hadn't prepared. It'll give you the idea though. I always sing the line ".... by the Jews was crucified" as "....by the soldiers crucified". Cheers, Joy

Azizi, that's a wonderful list. I'll look it over. But the "click here" says "this page cannot be displayed"
Sch(pl), that's one of our favorite songs of the season. Thanks for bringing it up- it's lovely.

Just got a call that today's a snow day from school, so I'll have time to look over the suggestions- thanks!

Not specifically gospel, but 'Now the green blade riseth' is traditional and related.

There is another that I presently can't copy (Microsoft have taken it into their heads to lock my MSoffice until I buy a conversion key to unlock all my old documents) but goes to the tune of 'Marching through Georgia'. Again, not strictly Gospel, it does have the benefit of a rollicking good tune that most people know, even if they don't know the words with it. It's in either 'Mission Praise'

'When the roll is called up yonder' is about resurrection and is quite suitable, again, another rollicking good tune.

God is our strength and refuge (dambusters)

God is our strength and refuge,
our present help in trouble;
and we therefore will not fear,
though the earth should change!
Though mountains shake and tremble,
though swirling floods are raging,
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

There is a flowing river
within god's holy city;
God is in the midst of her
she shall not be moved!
God's help is swiftly given
thrones vanish at his presence
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

Come, see the works of our maker,
learn of his deeds all powerful:
wars will cease across the world
when he shatters the spear!
be still and know your creator,
uplift him in the nations
God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore!

Is another good one... goes to the tune of the Dambusters March... bit more triumphal Pentecost than Easter, but heck, it's a good song!

Animaterra

I joined a Gospel trio last year, and the song, "The Robe of Calavary" was our debut on Easter Sunday.

Here are the lyrics:

His robe, His robe,
The robe of Calvary
Twas worn by my redeemer
Who lives eternaly.

Kings wear robes of gold and velvet
Soon their glory fades away
But the King of kings in heaven
Wore a homespun robe that day.

Soldiers gambled for His garment
While the sun turned dark above
But the men who crucified Him
Were forgiven by His love.

His robe, His robe,
The robe of calvary
Twas worn by my redeemer
Who lives eternaly.

Those who saw his robe knew torment
If they lived by sin and fault
But if they renounced the evil
They were welcome by the Lord.

Though it seems so plain and humble
There was fate in every thread
He who wore it lives forever
He has risen from the dead.

His robe, His robe,
The robe of calvary
Twas worn by my redeemer
Who lives eternaly (repeat to finish)

I searched the web for an audio file so you could hear it. Below is the only link I could find. It's not really the arrangement I would choose, but it will give you an idea of the melody and harmony parts. It really should be sung a little faster.

I humbly apologise for that long string of index and hymns... for some reason, though I highlighted only the last hymn, the whole darn lot got copied. That'll teach me to preview before I post!

Here's the one I couldn't get earlier, to the tune of 'Marching through Georgia' - not gospel but a damned good singalong!

Come and see the shining hope that Christ's apostle saw;
On the earth confusion, but in heaven an open door,
Where the living creatures praise the Lamb for evermore:
Love has the victory for ever!

Amen, He comes, to bring his own reward!
Amen, praise God, for justice now restored:
Kingdoms of the world become the kingdoms of the Lord,
Love has the victory for ever!

All the gifts you send us, Lord, are faithful, good and true;
Holiness and righteousness are shown in all you do,
Who can see your greatest gift, and fail to worship you?
Love has the victory for ever!

Amen, He comes, to bring his own reward!

Power and salvation all belong to God on high!
So the mighty multitudes of heaven make their cry,
Singing alleluia! where the echoes never die:
Love has the victory for ever!

Amen, He comes, to bring his own reward!

The Stanley Brothers had a whole BUNCH of Gospel songs; one sticks in mind as covering the whole Passion in three verses and chorus. Starts out:

One morning in Jerusalem, about the break of dawn
A great trial was in session, they tried the blessed Lord
They scorned him and they mocked him, they made him carry the cross
On top of Calv'ry mountain, there they crucified my Lord

Oh the cry (oh the cry) from the cross (from the cross)
Forgive them, blessed Father, he cried from the cross,
Oh the cry (oh the cry) from the cross (from the cross)
The son of God was drying to save the world from loss

Don't quite know how to track it down but I remember it well (obviously)

I can't find "It is well with my soul" on the African American Spiritual Permathread..which may be because it is a gospel song insted of a spiritual, and a widely known one at that..

It can certainly be used for Easter. The words go like this:

When peace like a river
attended my soul
when sorrows like sea billows roll,
whatever my lot
Thou has taught me to say
"It is well,
It is well,
with my soul.

Chorus:
It is well
[It is well]
With my soul
{with my soul]
It is well
[{It is well]    or [God has made it well]
with my soul.

Hi,
There are some great Sacred Harp tunes-- is that close enough to Gospel? There is the great Easter Anthem #236, also a version of the Wondrous Cross #447. Last Easter I did #415, Easter Morn, but the choir didn't really dig the funny harmonies.

Best Wishes, Jim

way back in the 1960's some Coventry teenagers wrote a lovely Easter hymn for a passion play. It had a sort of of calypso rythm, I'm sure you will find it on the net somewhere

Gentle Christ, Son of God
They nailed him up to a cross of wood
gentle Christ he lived and died
in borrowed stable and borrowed grave.

There is also a beautiful Easter carol on The Watersons Frost and Fire Album

Oh the holly bears a berry

a sort of variant of the Holly and the Ivy

However I'm pretty ignorant on such matters, and a proper Christian would probably have a few more leads.

all the best

Ennyhoo, a song I love to sing at Easter time - a hymn, not necessarily "Gospel" - is
"He Lives!"

(I also love "The Holy City," but that's definitely not "Gospel music.")

The Episcopal Church of the US (ECUSA) publishes an African-American hymnal (i.e., all traditional black gospel/spiritual numbers) entitled Lift Every Voice and Sing. It includes many of the aforementioned songs, probably quite a few more that haven't yet been mentioned, and provides 4-part harmony for most selections.

If I had a copy in front of me, I could probably pick out a few specific Easter/Holy Week favorites, but I only see the book in church ~ haven't swiped a copy for myself (tho I've been tempted...)

Someone already listed "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?" which always raised my neck hairs when I attended Methodist church in my youth (before I simplified to the Society of Friends). Among my Xmas CDs was one of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Now HER version is a belter.
