Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: Sail Og Rua From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 11 Jun 16 - 06:00 AM It's a girls name - think of it as Sally - so "Young, red-haired Sally". It's a lament for a murdered woman, essentially. Regards |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: Sail Og Rua From: keberoxu Date: 10 Jun 16 - 04:56 PM The one English translation that I could find, gives me pause, as it could be more literal. So I am going to post here, a sort of prose rather than poetic re-working of the English which can be found in "Amhráin Mhuighe Seóla: Traditional Folk Songs from Galway and Mayo," pp. 30 -31. (Good print-version of the tune though.) 1. Have pity on me, Mary. No roof over my head, no money to get milk for the baby, my arms the only cradle to rock with, weeping and grief. 2. I am fainting with weakness, no use hiding it, my strength is as a mist that evaporates. My very heart's blood sheds itself like tears, o God, with the death of my thousand-fold treasure. 3. My beloved, my maid never told a lie with that sweet mouth of hers. Not a woman to match her for the grace of her carriage, and the loveliness of the white breasts that satisfied her little babe. My love for my treasure could not preserve her from death. 4. Had I been the swain of an ugly old hag, then you might wonder at my devotion to my woman. But no, my bride came fresh and youthful to my home. 5. Was she, then, too young a woman to wed, when my heart learned to love her in secret? My treasure, you slipped away from me into the embrace of death, and you a fair young girl. 6. How greatly, how greatly I would prefer you at our home, milking our cows, or your company while roving out, to the dowry of someone old, be her dowry the wealth of a king. This isn't very good, but I could not find better, limited as my resources are. Anyone want to improve on my offering? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sail Og Rua From: keberoxu Date: 09 Jun 16 - 08:05 PM Tune and lyrics alike are given in the Amhráin Mhuighe Seóla: Traditional Folk-Songs from Galway and Mayo, edited by Mrs. Eileen Costello. Where the above posting gives four stanzas, the just-named anthology provides six, with translations. Yes, the six verses in print include the four verses above, for all that a few variations in words may be noted from line to line. Firstly, here are the two Gaelic verses previously missing in this thread, and demonstrating where they fit in with the previous four. "Sail Óg Ruadh," pp. 30 - 31 Verse I, as above. Verse II, as above. Verse III: Mo ghrádh, do bheilín Nár chum na breaga 'Gus do mhéin deas, nach raibh ag bean le fágháil Do dhá chich ghlégheal' Le do leanbh bá a bhréagadh A stóir, ní feidir liom thú thabhairt ó'n mbhás Verse IV: Dá brosainn do chailleach ghránda Thóigfeadh a lán orm a bheith ag dul i n-a diaidh Acht mo chailin breágh deas A dtug mé grádh dí Agus gur in a páisdín 's eadh fuair mé í Verses V and VI are the same as verses III and IV in the post before this one. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SAIL ÓG RUA (from Darach O Cathain) From: GUEST Date: 28 Feb 05 - 07:43 PM This is from the sleeve notes of the LP on which Darach O Cathain sang. SAIL ÓG RUA Nach mise an trua Mhuire 'Dul ar Charraigín an Fhásaigh Ag gol 's ag gárthaíl Agus ag déanamh bróin; Ag oiliúint mo leanna Ar bhacán mo láimhe Is gan fiú an braon bainne a'm A thiúrfainn dhó. II Níl mé ach go tréith-Iag. 'S níl maith 'ghá shéanadh, Agus níl mé ar aon nós Ach mar an ceo. Tá fuil mo chroí istigh Dá shilt 'na braona, Is a Dhia cé'n t-ionadh I ndiaidh mo mhíle stór. III In aois a sé déag Sea fuair mé fhéin i, 'S nár dheas an féirín í Ag fear le fáil. Ach a stóir mo chléibh Is tú d'fhág liom fhéin mé Mar chuair san gcré uaim In do chailín óg. IV B'fhearr liom go mór mór In mo dhiaidh san ród tú Ag bleán mo bhó dhom —A bheith i mbun mo thí; Ná saibhreas Sheoirse Is é fháil faoi stróinse; Is gur faoi an bhfód A chuir mé stór mo chroí. |

Subject: Lyr Req: Sail Og Rua From: GUEST,Sheila Shigley Date: 28 Feb 05 - 04:14 PM Greetings, All! I'd like very much to find the words to "Sail Og Rua(dh)," preferrably the version by Darach O Cathain, but any alternative would be greatly appreciated as well. Happy to trade other lyrics, Gaelic or otherwise, that I may have in exchange! Much obliged, Sheila Shigley |
