Roger

The good news is that there has already been a thread going about the National, thanks to Richard Bridge.

I've booked my ticket, and my accommodation. I notice your post only mentions indoor camping - are rooms, at £51 for the w/e, still available, or have they all gone?

Kitty

Well as usual I had a really good time sitting in the bar and chatting to friends. Unfortunately, drinking didn't come into it because there were two cider pumps, Gaymer's Old English and Scrumpy Jack. Scrumpy Jack is one of the better of the fizzy, chemical ciders, but, of course, they didn't actually have it, and Gaymer's Old English is disgusting fizzy sugar-water. I don't drink beer, so what else can you sit and drink pints of? I ended up on water! I did actually sing one song late on Friday night. I met two Catters I hadn't met before and saw lots of others I have. An enjoyable weekend even if I participated in less actual music than at others.

Love Lynne

It was good to make new acquaintances among Catters this weekend.

I think one of the highlights had to be the final Committee room session MC'd by Martin Carthy this afternoon, particularly when George Withers sang "When I get my MBE"...

I had a great time Friday evening, unfortunately had a gig in deepest darkest Kent on Saturday night so couldn't stay for the rest of the weekend but glad we made it if only for a bit. Having been to a funeral in the morning (yes, same one as alanww if anybody's wondering) it was just what we needed to relax and cheer up. Didn't make it outside the bar all night :) Lovely to meet some new people and catch up with some familiar ones.

+ thaks ever so much for the CDs Mary!

I was still laughing at that song by George Withers when half way home. Not the best idea in the middle lane of a fairly busy M1

A remarkable gathering of generally like minded people. Only my second visit but it felt as if I had been going for years :0)

Even those who are normally not keen on concerts have a great choice of many small groupings of guests performing informally in intimate venues.

The presence of half a dozen or so folk degree students from Newcastle University contrasted beautifully with the older Geordie Folkies.

The enthusiasm and skill of these students had to be heard to be believed.

Whatever the venue will be there in 2006.

This is a bit late os I have been very busy, but some great sessions and I managed a formal performance or two. Lots of catters and a great late night session after closing on Saturday night with the bar staff (who as ever were absolutely stupendous IMHO), and Dr. Sunshine.

My favourite bits of the weekend were Friday night with the Carthy/Waterson/Killen/Fisher combination; an informal singaround until the wee small hours in the corridor outside the ladies loo (the acoustics were fantastic); another singaround in the Octagon Room on Saturday night, and the last session in the Committee Room - George, his twinkle in the eye, and the way he absolutely slayed the room with his MBE song (would that I could be that good at 81 - or even now!). Shouldn't forget John Cocking's superb delivery of monologues either - the whole session was a joy - a mixture of crying with laughter and luxuriating in good music. After 15 years' attendance, IMHO this year's National was one of the best in quite a few years that I can recall.

Yes; afraid I can't remember her name. The competition this year was quite stiff, with a number of good performances, and as well as a winner this year there were three honourable mentions (one of whom was Pete Grassby - and not before time, as he's been in for it in most of the years that I've been attending. IMHO he should have probably won this year, but for the fact that he stumbled over his first verse.) Anyhow, the tankard was back in the hands of a woman again - with the exception of the hiccup with Brian (and he definitely deserved his win last year), that makes at least seven female winners since 1997 (there was no competition in 2001, thanks to the lack of a festival due to foot and mouth).

I thought it was a shame that, having finally got around to giving the winner a slot in the last session of the weekend last year, it was back to square one again this year, with the winner remaining the best kept secret of the National yet again!!
