From a note posted to the New River Old Time list:

Many who have visited or played at the Carter Fold will never forget Joe Carter's music, his humor and his twinkling eyes as he shared a greeting, a joke or a song. Joe died Wednesday of liver cancer. He had health problems for several years, but continued to be a part of the Carter Fold program as recently as a few weeks ago. Joe was a talented songwriter and when I saw him in December he played a CD of his songs that are in production for, hopefully, release soon.

Arrangements will probably be released today, but I expect the visitation and funeral this weekend.

Oh, what a bass voice the Heavenly choir has now!

Tommy Bledsoe

I didn't mean to assume that everyone is familiar with him, so here's a brief explanation:

Joe Carter is the son of A.P. and Sara Carter, of the Carter Family. He and his sister Jeanette have been keeping their family's traditions alive by their work at the Carter Fold. The web site link that Allan C. posted above is where you can find more info.

I misspelled Janette's name...sorry about that...

Here are more details from the Carter Fold web site:

Following a struggle with pancreatic cancer, Joe Carter, 78, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, shortly before 5 p.m. One of three children born to A.P. and Sara Carter, Joe was a beloved personality and performer at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia.

He and his sister Janette spent most of their lives in the southwest corner of Virginia, where their parents and Maybelle Addington Carter formed the world-famous Carter Family trio that began recording in 1927.

Although the family was aware of the imminence of Joe's death, his passing has deeply affected Janette and the rest of the tightly knit family.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, Virginia. Visitation will be Saturday, March 5, between 4 and 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, a short distance from the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia. Flowers or a donation to the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund at the following address are welcome.
