My first trip out of the UK was to New Zealand. My sister won a lot of money on the NZ lottery and paid for my father and mother to over. Father wouldn't fly so I went instead. Although the experience of going to NZ was a fantastic one and one I'd love to repeat, the experience of spending a month living with my sister again, is one I would not. This was confirmed when she came back for a while in 1998. Within 12 minutes of her landing, I wanted to punch her lights out. The next 3 weeks fluctuated between hell, purgatory, mild distress and full on panic mode.

My first step on European soil was on a trip to Brussells in 1986 or 7. The step in question was the one leading up to the service station shop where we stopped for T&P (Toilet and Provisions) and I fell over it. Spent the rest of the weekend hopping round with ripped tendons!


My first broadcast solo singing performance was as an 11yr old chorister, singing the first verse of 'Once in royal David's city', at a local hospital. I just thought it was for the people in the chapel, they told me afterwards it had been broadcast on the hospital radio service to the whole building and nurses home!

The first time I was kissed, I was 17, a guy took me up to see the Brown Mountain lights. His car did not hit a skunk. A skunk hit his car. It assured privacy. I discovered that I really like kissing, and I've been fond of skunks ever since. God bless the little stinkers.

THe first Square dance I ever played was in 1972. I sat in with Tude Tangquay who was an amazing fiddle player . Watching the young new couples and the long marrieid ones all dancing as one comunity really touched me and was a very romantic night . Lovely memory . All the best , guy

First sing was in a working men's club at the age of five when I stood on the stage and sang "I saw a bird in the top of a tree".

First time I got drunk I don't remember much about. I was 17 and baby sitting for my brother and sister. I had a couple of friends round and they brought vodka and orange with them, which I drank and got drunk on (though not excessively) I didn't enjoy the experience or the next day (though I leared later that it was an incredibly mild hangover I'd had...I've had some stinkers since!) But I couldn't drink vodka for years after that.

1974 - my first period. I woke up in a very, very wet bed. With the light on we discovered it was blood. An heated discussion about hygene developed with my then partner. On then visiting the toilet I discovered it was me. Our experimentation had resulted in the rupturing of a testicle. This was the start of a very painful three months.

I've never smoked or done drugs so there are no firsts there, but I feel I've missed out on a vital part of growing up, i.e saying no to drugs. I've never been offered them, I feel left out, it would be nice to say no to drugs once!

I was brought up to drink cider, my grandfather made it (even though he was supposed to stop making it after the war....) and so it was my given drink. I first tasted beer (Devenish Brewery, beer was I think called 'Devenish'.. it later became known as 'JD') in the folk club in a pub called the Sunray, at Osmington, Dorset. It was a Tuesday evening in the summer and the cider was off.... Been hooked ever since!

My First Drink Of Beer


I don't remember my first drink of beer. I was too young. My mother said that even though my father didn't drink much after he came back from World War Two, they kept beer around for visitors. They kept it in the refrigerator, in a quart bottle. My mother and father noticed that the beer was going down. On night they waited. I came downstairs and opened the frig. I drank some beer. I closed the bottle and put it back. Then I went back to bed. My parents thought it was funny. They stopped keeping beer in the frig, though. I was about three years old.

Liz, I like to think I NEVER judge. The more naughty things you do, the more you realise you have NO right to judge anyone else.

Ok, now we've got down to the nitty gritty....my first was in the back seat of an old Ford Prefect with a klaxon horn at a place called Pelican Point We were both 17 and it was something I had decided it was time I did. Afterwards I wondered what all the fuss was about...no big deal and not particularly enjoyable I thought. It was quite a long time until I realised why it was enjoyable, but I kept doing it anyway!

My first fag (cigarette) was also my last. I was 15 and was given it by a friend who said "I bet you can't smoke the whole thing" so I did (of course). I wasn't sick like some people I know, but I thought it tasted so disgusting I've never had another one...I'm very glad to say.

Lots of other firsts in my life...I'm still having firsts. I might write some more of them when I think about it.

I dyslexed that first phrase alanabit... was quite worried for a while!!!

It happens to girls too... I was with a 'friend' one evening, in his house on his wife's chicken farm, when there was a torch through the window and a knock on the door... Being a chicken farm and it being December, the local police had instructions to check on the farm every hour or so, looking out for thieves after a cheap Christmas dinner. It took quite a lot of persuading to get them not to report the open gate and 'other occupant'... Knowing the owner to be a dark haired woman, they weren't expecting a blonde in the bed.....

(Incidentally, before you judge, I was single and his wife was off on her regular weekly jaunt to her lover, whom she'd been seeing for 3 years.. their marriage was formally dissolved 6 months after this Christmas!)

I recall very well the night I broke my duck and it was rather closer to Norman Wisdom than to Robert Redford, I can assure you. I am not going to give you all the sordid details, but when her husband returned unexpectedly (that dog's bark saved my life!) I ducked down at the side of the bed, clutching my underpants as if they were some kind of a talisman against jealous husbands... She sent him off for a pee before he came to bed and I made my inglorious escape. You would not believe it if you saw it in a film -and neither would I.
After that inauspicious start, I loved and lost a few times. I never repeated that experience though, so I must have learned something from it.

I remember my first kiss (13), "UK" fag (15), "goingalltheway" (15, no, we did not have the fag afterwards), but they all pall compared to the first falling in love - properly I mean, where your ego disappears and nothing else matters:

I was 20. I had already spent some 2 months looking at her over the heads of other folkies sitting cross-legged on the floor of the Heritage Folk Society, Oxford, but dared not approach her. One evening my gang of friends happened to go out someplace with her gang of friends, and at the end of the evening she offered to phone for taxis. As she went into a telephone booth I slipped in beside her on some pretext. As we phoned, the back of my hand touched hers. Talk about electricity, we could have powered the town for a year just then.

Nothing was said, not then. I eventually went out with her the next day. But that moment of our hands touching, I will never forget.

I fell in love some 11,685 times after that. The last was this morning, when I woke up and saw her sleeping peacefully.

First kiss... I was 14, green as grass paint, it was by the tennis courts on Greenhill, Weymouth and his name was Paul Burgess, my best school friends' brother. He had reddish brown hair, freckles, and the lovliest hazel eyes. His was the first proper 'live' willy I ever saw too.... although that's probably going too far.

The swoop in my stomach that I got kissing him has only been repeated twice.... Once with a certain hairy person, who is now a vicar, and on my first motorbike ride... on all three occasions I knew I was hooked.

The first motorbike ride was when I was 16, it was a Suzuki 500, I borrowed a red full face helmet, borrowed a leather jacket and whizzed off at stupid speeds..... buggered if I can remember the name of the bloke I was dating at the time.....

My first kiss happened when I was 16. I had spent the earlier part of the evening at the movies (Popeye) with a group of friends. After the movie, I was supposed to babysit. One of my friends had offered to walk part of the way with me. It was dark outside and big fluffly flakes of snow were falling from the sky. As we walked I remember laughing a lot as he was imitating Popeye and singing.....I yam what I yam cuz I eat me spinach, I'm Popeye the sailor man...you get the idea. When we were about 3 houses away from where I had to go, we stopped under a street light and said our goodnights. I started to walk away and called my name, I turned around and he kissed me. I was so surprised that I didn't know what to do. He smiled at me and said goodnight.

My first kiss (after a fashion) was from a boy in school called Roger Feltham. I was 9. He was even younger, and had to stand on a grass bank to be level with me.

The first DECENT kiss was when I was 16 and on holidays with my parents at Jenolan Caves. I went on a walk to the Devil's Coachhouse, and I met this boy. We kept on walking together, and I still remember the kiss - very romantic. I floated for the rest of the day. Then that night, I heard "Tonight" from "West Side Story", and I still associate that song with that day. Never saw him again though :-(

Up to a few years ago, I played mandolin/recorder in a group called Beltane which performed during our attempted Celtic festival.

Trouble came when the guitarist and banjo-player got into a raging row. They turned up for our gig - this is true - each with his own complete PA system - mics, monitors, the works - and set up side by side. I had to act as go-between because neither would speak to the other.

After the first set, our hirers paid us in full and asked us to please leave, and quickly. It's the first and only time I've been ejected not even half way through a performance.

moved into a house in Denver in 1982 that had mixed medium-blue/light blue/white shag. Our previous house had had wood floors and even as a four-year old I thought it was vile and wrong. Moved into a rental house five years later that had mixed blue/green. Hideous.

My sweetest memory, had it happened in a movie, would have been disgustingly overdone and unbelievable, but it was lovely.

I was in Hungary for the summer at a total immersion summer language school, and had picked up a beautiful local boy to hang out with, who spoke several languages but nothing that I spoke, so I *had* to use Hungarian, so my control of the language got really, really good. Anyway, when the summer school was over I went back to Budapest to hang out with my greataunt, and my parents came for a week or so and stayed in a hotel. Well, sweetie came to Budapest for a day over a weekend, and we spent the day driving in the hills, hiking, talking, being adorable together. At some point he picked a red flower for me and I had it in my breast pocket for the duration of the afternoon. That evening he took me back to my parents' hotel, walked me up to their room, and then left, in all likelihood never to be seen again. I went over to the window to watch him walk away, and as he headed under the window, I dropped the flower. It landed right at his feet. He saw it, looked up to see me looking out the window, picked it up, kissed it, and put it in HIS breast pocket, and then walked away. It was absolutely the most beautiful thing. What hokum!

My first guitar: Stella, in 1961 I think. Later painted her with kitchen enamel. Didn't change the sound one bit. Put flat-wound strings on. Didn't change the sound one bit. Afterwards, if there was less than 1/2" of space between the strings and the frets I though the guitar had 'great' action.

First attempted kiss, I was in grade one and my friend dared myself and a school mate named Hans to kiss after school. We met on either side of a wire fence after school with our faces close together to appear as if we were being intimate, while he sang Jesus Loves Me. It was not exactly what I expected, but I guess he was more frightened than I was.

I think my first real kiss was when I was 13 or 14 with a young lad who tagged me out on second base at a baseball game on a family picnic one summer. We went for a walk after the game, obstensibly to listen to his transistor radio and he kissed me in the middle of Mule Skinner Blues. It wasn't a particularly romantic song but it did it for me.

The first time I ever did it for money was with Gerald Durrell.

I was just out of journalism school, and I convinced a local weekly to let me cover his visit to Pittsburgh. I went to a press luncheon with reporters who got paid a decent wage, and heard him give his views on preserving endangered species. His Mauritsian pink pigeons had just hatched and he was terribly pleased. I think I got $5 for the story. But I was a working journalist!

My first shag was in Whatcom County, Washington in 1977. And when friends came to stay it was thick enough to cushion their sleeping bags without a pad. It was an ugly rusty-orange, and it was in a rented place.

Kiss: I'm not sure I want to admit this but . . . October of 1999. I was 22 (senior year of college) and he and I had been hinting about being interested for awhile but both were too shy/inexperienced to admit anything. He finally cornered me in my room one night and we finally confessed that we liked each other, and then stood there like idiots not knowing what else to do.

Shag: N/A. I and the fellow mentioned above never got that far.

Fag: What kind of fag? British version: I used to smoke occasionally--tobacco and non-tobacco both--with my next-door dorm-mate but never took to it as a lasting habit. American version: I've had enough gay friends but I personally am not into other women.

Sing: I ran out of things to play on the lap dulcimer at open mic night at the barbecue joint and my mother made me sing "Vacant Chair" as a mild protest against the war in Iraq.

My first filk experience was about three months ago. I was at a science-fiction convention, and I'd heard recordings of science-fiction folk music for years. I'd seen lyrics for a long time, as well. When I heard that there would be a filk sing on Saturday night, I wandered around the basement of the hotel, buttonholing folks and asking about filk. It was very much a word-of-mouth sort of thing.

well, I not only heard lots of science-fiction songs, but old sea chanteys and ballads, too. I was misty-eyed and enraptured. :)

I love knowing that I can still have a sense of wonder at having experiences for the first time. :)

Wow, now I feel really slow. My first kiss was when I was 18, he and I sort of discussed it, decided we were indeed dating (my first boyfriend as well) and so dating people kiss eachother. It wasn't a great kiss, I wasn't sure I wanted to be kissing anyone anyway, and all in all not spectacular. I got engaged to him, and then we broke up nine months later. We did have many more much improved kisses during that time.

We were both 15 and I was out on my first real movie date, and Father had let me use his car. We held hands at the movie and afterwards I parked at the top of the Guide Board Hill and we kissed each other. That pleased us both and she left for her home in California the next day.

Hmmm. First kiss? Hmmm. I'm not quite sure, but it may have been with a girl named Sue...back in the early 70's. Geez! Well, that was the first sort of all-out kiss anyway. Not bad. Pretty impressive. But I was nervous, and that sort of interfered with the effect.

My first shag was in a room I was renting in downtown Toronto in 1970. It was a nice shag as they go, quite colorful and tasteful at the same time, but hard to keep dust-free, needless to say. My affection for that shag endured for many years, until I finally passed it on to a young cousin who needed one to give her place that "lived-in" look. I hope she appreciated it, because after all one's first shag is not a thing ever to be forgotten!

I hasten to add that I have never worn platform shoes.

I was five years old. She had long hair and she was a goddess. She finally agreed to come to my house after school. As I opened the door for her and she entered, I playfully kicked her in the bottom because that was what the hilarious Three Stooges always did. She did not appreciate the humour, and I was crestfallen (apologies JP). Funny, at just age five, without a clue, I was chasing a piece of tail. Innate? Innape?

My first public musical performance was playing rhythm guitar for a twelve-year-old child prodigy flat-picker named Allen Shadd in 1979. The kid and I knew each other from bluegrass festivals and he needed a rhythm guy. We played on a flatbed truck stage parked in a baseball field in Middleburg, Florida, outside of Jacksonville. I got paid $100 US for playing forty-five minutes which absolutely floored me. That was half a week's pay at my regular job.

We did a few more gigs together over the next couple of years but lost touch after I moved away. Allen started playing electric rock guitar, got fed up with gigging and became a plumber. Then he got the bug again in the mid-90's, put his chops back together and started winning every picking contest in sight, including the National Flat-Picking Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 1997.

12.5 years old and locked braces (orthodontics) with a girl who also had braces, sitting on the rocks overlooking the water at sunset, at summer camp. 3 days later she "dropped" me and I was crestfallen. :-)

I was also 14 when I had my first kiss.....it was down at the bike racks at school and I was NOT impressed, 'cos I still thought kissing was kind of like a prolonged version of what your Mum gave you to say goodnight, so it was mouth definitely closed. He had his mouth open, consequently I got all wet around my mouth. I decided I wasn't going to do that again.

My first boyfriend was when I was 13 though, and I'm in contact with him again now, due to "School Friends Australia". It's really nice, but very strange, since the picture in my head is of a tall, skinny 15 year old with red hair, and the picture he e-mailed me is of a man of 55....

My first kiss was on 11 February, 1998. I was 14. It was in a music parctice room at school. I'd been with him for 1 year. We split 3 and a half years later!

My first sing in public was when I was 4! According to Mum, it was at a Wath Festival singaround in the Red Lion pub. Neither of us can remember what I sang though!

As for shag, fag, and baby, not yet, and never when it comes to fags!

Remember my first sing ever in public. It was on holiday in Ireland in a pub on a Saturday night. There was a band playing all sorts in a large room - everything from trad to jazz - and one of the lads I was with passed my name up, there were Smithwicks beer mats provided with a space to do this. Over the noise I heard my name being called out and the assembled throng being told I was going to regale them with a song. The room went as quiet as the grave and I was propelled onto the stage. I somehow managed to squawk a couple of songs and went to sit down again. When I got back to the table I found it absolutely laden with pints of Guinness. Even with five of us attacking it we couldn't get through it all.


Sorry if this seems somewhat mundane, but I couldn't possibly comment on the first fag, kiss or shag. Someone has to have a sense of propiety!!!

Ok that was funny! Talking about carpet or maybe it was sex, either way - what a scream! Well my fondest first memories are things like the first time I help my babies, and the first time I sang on stage, my first kiss with my husband. Our first kiss was so sweet, we were on a double date (our second)and he was playing a baseball themed pinball machine that gave out baseball cards if you got a grand slam. Well he got a grand slam and the card was a player from Puerto Rico, where I was born, and so he turned to me and kissed me gently on the lips and went right back to playing. I melted! I still get goosebumps when I think of it and that was 14 years ago.

Those cream coloured shags are the worst. It's really hard to keep them clean - they get all spiky and grey-looking. I could never commit to one.

My first shag was in an apartment I rented in 1974. I'd like to say it was a high point in my life but, upon reflection, it was a total mistake. I don't even remember what color it was. And, though it looked good at the time I'm pretty sure I'd find it downright ugly now. It was just one of those spur-of-the-moment things that you live to regret. It never occurred to me that there was more to having a shag than just laying it on the floor. A shag entails a long-term commitment. I was totally unprepared. Heck, I didn't even have a vacuum-cleaner and you just can't keep shag carpeting clean with a broom.
