From: Big Mick

I finally have my internet access sorted out here in New Jersey, and just in time to share some wonderful news with my Mudcat friends. I received a call from my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have been asked to be the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Parade. For once, I was speechless. I am very honored, and can't wait for the day. It will be a bit dodgy, with gigs and all, but we will work it out.

Just had to share.

Mick

I bet they made him Grand Marshall because there was a rumor he was gonna march in it and play pipes. Since he (so he claims) plays Uillean pipes, it might have been entertaining to watch...for an adult audience. Children shouldn't be exposed to the sight of a grown man walking like a combination of The Mummy ("Walk this way") and a disgruntled chicken. They gave him a nice, safe job sitting in a car and waving at people. If he's waving, he can't be fingering a chanter.

Seriously, congratulations, dood. Like Dani, I hope there will be pictures.

A St. Patrick's parade in GRAND RAPIDS?????????!!!!!!! This is something new and different in the years since I lived there. Congrats, buddy! Wish I could be there to see you! Rattle that spud for me, sweetie.

Actually, many, many years ago in Grand Rapids, my Dad and I won a St. Paddy's Day contest sponsored by WOOD Radio. All they asked was for listeners to "Make Something Green." My Calvin College professor Dad came downstairs grinning mischievously on the morning the contest was announced and told me he needed my help to win the contest. (He was afraid if he entered under his own name, he'd lose his job.) Long story short, we dyed one of my mom's rather ample cotton brassieres a vivid kelly green, and mounted it on a large cardboard shamrock, with the caption (of course!): Erin Go Bra I, of course, got to "help" by lending my name to the project. The announcers giggled their way through the morning as they announced the prizewinning green "thing." I won 50 bucks. And had to explain to my high school classmates that, no, the bra was NOT MINE. (the announcers were rather fixated on the 44 E size tag in the thing)....

You gotta wonder who got the ball rolling on this. As in:

"Ok, now I'm gonna open up the floor to nominations for St Pat's Parade Grand Marshall."
    "What's that, boss?"
Guy rides in a car with no top and waves at people.
"Ah.. I got it. Got a big pointy hat and speaks Polish, right?"
"No that's the Pope. This guy's in the big annual parade. Dresses up for it."
"The big dude in the red suit?, boss? Only comes once a year, and boy, is his wife..."
"No, that's Santa Clause, Jimmy. Just gimme some names of guys who won't say 'no' and who are more or less Irish."
"Oh NOW I get it! You want a guy to be like the leper-con king or sumthin'. Dresses up in the GREEN suit with the pointy-toed shoes and leads the parade people towards a rainbow, cuz that's where his pot..."
"Jimmy...2, 3, 4..."
"BITE ME, BOSS!!! Haha - good one!"
"Jimmy? Did you say "Bite me" to moi? You know, Donald Trump has always been my hero, and I'd like to take this opportunity to quote him: 'You're fired!'
Now, how about those ideas..."

Which still doesn't answer how your name came up, Mick, but has got me thinking that if you got a Santa suit and some Kelly green spray paint, you could be the Biggest Damn Leprechaun That Ever Lived. Boy, do I want photos...

Jeri ..... I love ya ...... somewhat Irish???????? ...... 2 - 3 - 4 .......

BITE ME

. And I don't do the leprechaun thing. Next thing you will want is me drinking green beer. UGH!!

Yes, Dani, there is a Santa...... oops, wrong story. Yes, I do wear kilts. I usually don't wear a "clan" tartan. Irish folks don't have clan tartans. I usually wear solid colors, black being my fav. I wear it with a leather vest. I wear them because I like them, nothing more. I have been considering having one made in a new tartan inspired by the Irish Diaspora. Seems an appropriate one to me.

Kath, you are another one that I love a great deal. But your problems in Grand Rapids were due to not getting out of those neighborhoods you lived in ..... hhahahahahaha. Grand Rapids, Michigan is home to the second oldest active charter in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Only one in New York is older. At one time it was the second largest division in the country. There is a picture of a St. Pat's parade in the early twentieth century that was huge. The Irish immigrant community lived in a number of places, but Michigan Street hill was loaded. The area just north and east of town is where the village of Parnell (named after a famous Irishman for those who don't know) is located. The Catholic church there is St. Patrick's. That always cracks me up because Parnell was a Protestant. I think there is something prophetic there. Just down the road is the town of Grattan, named after another Irish patriot. The lake just outside of Parnell where many of the Irish congregated is named Murray Lake, another Irish name. Our parade, which was dormant for a number of years, was reinstituted in the 70's, although there was never a time when there wasn't a flag raising.

We will start the day at Mass, as is the proper thing to do. I think that instead of the same old "Let me tell you how Irish I am" that Irish Americans are fond of doing for their address to the crowd, I will gather the children around the front of the stage and tell them a tale from their culture. Adults already have their ideas as to what it is to be Irish. I think I want to take the opportunity to talk to the young ones and tell them of the land from which they came. The heritage, as all heritages are, is rich and beautiful. ***I just realized I sound like a Jed Marum song here. There are worse things to sound like*** Maybe a song. We will see.

Thanks for all your good wishes. Historic landmark, indeed!!! ....... hhhhmmmmmpppppphhhhhh!!!!!.

All the best,

Mick

Are you working on the parade wave? Elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist, wrist, wrist. I'm sure you'll be able to do it without spilling your Guinness.

Proud and happy for you pal.

Be sure you ride on a float or in a car. Don't walk, that's too much like work and would be bad for business at LFPS. We've got to talk about the NJ branch office soon.

Cheers,

D

Mick, Congrats! GR to NJ, back to GR, back to NJ, now there's a diaspora for you.
As regards the kilt, there is a company who makes Irish County tartan kilts - in fact, I wear my Co. Antrim tartan at a lot of festivals and shows.
You find your ancestral home county/counties and wear those tartans.
Make sure your kilt is wool. A cotton kilt an't gonna do you a damn bit of good in GR in March! Go get 'em big fella..

And here in Podunk, FL, the city fathers (well, police anyway) have declared it a major no-no to drink alcoholic beverages in a parade. The biggest parade hereabouts is the "Springtime Tallahassee" parade, which is having it's 30th anniversary (I think) this year. With nice weather, it usually draws about 200,000 folks to town. I suspect there is a good bit of puffery in that number. Our little "family" style St Patrick's parade, on the other hand, is scarcely a mile walk, and probably draws 3-5 thousand. This is the 6th edition next Saturday. The parade is so short that I suppose we could survive without a drink during the parade. Guess we'll have to make do with "holy water." The local stuff is not as good, at least to my taste, as Irish poteen, but it shares the quality of seeming innocuosness in a water bottle.

Congrats, Mick!

Is your parade on the 17th (St. Patrick's Day itself) or on some convenient weekend day (like ours, coming soon on next Saturday the 12th)?

Either way, I imagine it may have been difficult to arrange the trip back to Grand Rapids so very soon after relocating and starting a new job. Good on ya!

Poppa, we actually have three in the area. The largest is the Grand Rapids parade of which I am the Grand Marshall. It always occurs the Saturday before the 17th unless the 17th falls on Saturday. There are two others in the area that occur on the day.

Due to band committments with the Conklin Ceili Band, I had made arrangements prior to coming out to NJ.

I can't wait.

Mick

It seems most inappropriate to have this in the BS section, because BS it most definately aint.

A singular honour good sir, well done. Just soak up the day.

Hey Mick - I happen to have access to a decent sized drum... I also know a couple of guys who play fife. I'm sure they could be talked into helping "clear the way" for the official grand marshal of the parade by playing something appropriate....

The Sash comes to mind.... mostly to see who catches on... ;-)

Seriously - congrats -

He's gonna have to form a posse in special uniforms, with GRAND MARSHALLS on the back of the jackets, in yellow-- doing Tommy Lee Jones imitations. Then likely he'll come arrest everyone at the Getaway-- with a potato gun. :~)

I hope you've got some longjohns (preferably green ones) to go under that kilt! The Grand Rapids forecast for Saturday:
Snow showers at times. Highs in the upper 20s and lows in the mid teens.

I have fond memories of St. Patrick's Day parades in Buffalo, NY. They go on for HOURS!! And there were LOTS of marching bands!

Heartiest congratulations, Mick! Wish I could be there to see you leading that parade! Who's taking the pics and posting them here for us?

KT

Mick (and all),

We have multiple St. Patrick's "Day" parades on different days in New Orleans, too. I march with the Irish Channel club, whose parade is always on the previous Saturday, just like yours in Grand Rapids. Another group in the suburbs parades on Sunday, the day after we do, and the Downtown Irish Club marches on the 17th, in the evening.

The local Italian-Americans celebrate their heritage on St. Josephs Day, March 19 (unlike their counterparts in othe American cities who prefer Columbus Day, in October). There are two or three Irish-Italian clubs who continue the celebration into the next weekend, holding events "half-dedicated" to St. Pat.

Ours is the biggest parade of the year in the city, with over 3500 participants. The club members all walk, wearing rented green-tie-and-tails; membership is growing every year, and was very close to a thousand (960) as of our final meeting a couple of weeks ago.

Following the marching club members are numerous floats and trucks, sponsored by various other organizations, each carrying riders (2500 in all!) who throw beads to the crowds, just like in a Mardi Gras parade, and also throw loads of cabbages, potatoes and other vegetables. Those cabbages are about the size and weight of bowling balls, so active participation as a spectator at this parade demands a degree of alertness, if not athleticism ~ if you can't catch, you'd better at least be able to duck! (Drunk or sober, you must be on your toes.)

that's the difference. Celebrating one's ethnicity is very different then rascism. Especially since "race" is nothing but a bogus claim based on superficial differences.

Hi Mick>br>
Nice to see that you're the right coast, maybe you'll be able to hit the northeast a little more often. You'll have to start singing the "Rollin Mills of NJ". My man in NJ whose the man in the know says that NJ paid off Michigan to get you outta state so they could close up their borders before you could get back. They were in such fear of your return that they had Michigan offer (at quite an expense) you the GM's position knowing that you'd bite. Bite me, haha. Don't take it personaly but your picture's been showing up at every toll booth along the northeast coast from Maryland to Canada. Your name & #'s been put into the national database, don't not fly or go by bus or rail, to Michigan I repeat do not back. I've been watching a story about Marshall's & how the Dept of Homeland security has been investigating all Marshalls & Kendall gave you up as being the Top Dog from the mid waist. Oh, oh, a report just came in that Michigan is backing out of the deal & NJ's threating war.
May I suggest that you don't ware a kilt & bring attention to yourself. Up here in New Hampshire I've heard that they'll allow you entry & refuge with no possible chance of extradition, at a cost of course. The other conditions were no kilts, no singing or playing music & no more parades. You're lucky, this is the fisrt time NH has granted this status to anyone whose red faced & of Irish decent. Hey, is GM under PM or above? Seeing as how I like you, you can hide out here at my place for awhile, just keep a low profile, I don't want the town talking.Well I guess all I can add is that you have yourself a rea good time on St Paddy's Day. Hey, didn't St Pat hate the Irish & didn't he drive out the snakes because they were an important food source, so why the parade?

Celebrating ethnicity is equally as bogus. It assumes a difference from other people and then highlights it. St Paddy Day parades is a sectarian exercise, nothing more, nothing less.

GUEST,Anti-Racist, would you please BITE ME?

St. Paddy's Day is just a bit of fun, a Great Day For The Irish, and also for the part-Irish and even the non-Irish: anyone who wants to be Irish for the day is certainly welcome.

I'ts NOT about a group extolling itself as better than anyone else.

There is, perhaps, still an element of "we're-just-as-good-as-anyone," thanks to centuries of oppression, plus ~ for the Irish in America ~ a celebration of the liberty and equality found in a new country that was sorely missing back at home. The harsh realities behind this attitude may be fading into history these days, but unfortunately discrimination against the Irish people is still not entirely a thing of the past, not everywhere.

So ~ tomorrow's the big day! We're expecting perfect parade weather in New Orleans: temperatures in the low 70s (F) and not a cloud in the sky. I'm sure it'll be somewhat chillier in Grand Rapids, but you folks up there should be used to that; here's hoping you won't be marching in rain (or snow!), and that everyone has a great time.

PS: At Jed Marums' gig last night at O'Flaherty's, we learned of a nice new promotion on the part of Guinness this year: buy a pint and keep the special commemorative glass, imprinted with the message "Happy St. Patrick's Season 2005." [Emphasis mine.]

Hi folks. I am in a bit of a fog. My flight got delayed due to weather, and I ended up arriving home at 1:30 AM or so, and home in bed at 2:00. I was up at 6:00 in order to be at the Grand Marshall's breakfast. Then on to the parade. It was a nice mile and a half walk with a little snow falling. PoppaG, I don't want to hear a word!!! Even with the weather, there was a very nice contingent of folks. At Calder Plaza we raised the flag, and had the local politico's presented the proclamations from the City and the Governor. A wonderful surprise was that my daughter and another girl did a very special step dance for their Dad's. What made it special is that the girls were dancing for their Daddy's who can't be there. Ciara because I am working in New Jersey, and Casey because her Daddy just passed a little over a week ago. I was affected deeply to say the least.

Due to the weather they asked that I keep my comments down to an hour or so (LOL). I told them I could barely say hello in an hour. Seriously, I did what I wanted to do I took the microphone, sat on the edge of the stage, called the kids up, and told them stories about good St. Pat. While most of the kids were of Irish descent, there were others who were not. I told them that no matter what part of the world their people came from, they had stories such as these. I then said a few words of thanks, and off we went.

I then began the round of gigs for the day. I played steadily until the early morning and fell into bed this morning at 4:00 AM. I am getting to old for this shite..... hahahaha. We are playing all week long, and St. Pat's day will start very early for us and end very late.

I'm sorry if this seems a bit disjointed but I am still pretty beat.

All the best,

Mick

Sounds like a great day, Mick. You are to be commended for playing so late into the evening after the rigors of your trip plus your leading role in the parade earlier in the day.

I wasn't even able to drag myself out of the house for someone else's performance (Jed's) after marching in our four-hour parade. And I wasn't the Big Cheese like you, just one of a thousand anonymous club members.

The weather? Exactly the kind of weather you don't want to hear about, I'm afraid. Lucky us :^)
