He will be missed. I loved the Friday Rock show and it got me through hard times when I had no money to go out. Tommy also introduced us young headbangers to a host of great bands over the years. Thank you Mr. Vance.

I remember being one of two or three heavy metalists at school, listening to the Friday night rock show trying desperatly to do the connections compitition and going to see bands at the Coulston Hall like Girls School, Camel, UFO, Scorpians, Iron Maiden "Beast on the road tour '81" Not forgetting Saxon

I think you must be about my age Sidewinder. I have fond memories of the Friday night Rock show from my late teens. Over the years I heard his name come up occasionally and it would take me back to my headbanging days. I haven't thought about the Tygers of Pang Tan for a long long time.

LTS I am sure Tommy wouldn't give 2 hoots about the publicity and John Peel would have been even more disinterested.But Blackburn and Edmonds are probably planning their own publicity for their demisals on a grandiose scale as we speak. Ads on FAB FM hourly and replays of "The House Party" on the BBC - lord help us!

Well said Sidewinder.. I'd almost forgotten the Tygers...

I'm surprised at the lack of obvious sympathy over the death of one of the old school of DJs, who played what they liked to listen to, and introduced new acts to mainstream audiences. John Peel's death achieved near national mourning, whereas, Tommy, a close colleague of Johns' and another stalwart of the 1960's & '70's music scene has passed almost without comment.

Oddly enough, one of the adverts on TV last night, straight after the ITV news report of his death, was one that he'd done the voice-over for...

I remember listening (and taping shh!don't tell anyone) to The Friday Night Rock Show on Radio 1 for many years and I was at Donnington when Tommy was there (way back when) a great bloke who introduced many of us to the less well known Rock acts that manage, still to this day, to keep on rocking when the Stadium bands of yesteryear have all but been forgotten. Who can forget Magnum and Great White and Tygers of Pang Tan and Saxon and Accept (must have influenced Rammstein) who Tommy played regularly on his show despite their lack of chart success.As was said in a previous posting Tony Blackburn,Noel Edmonds and Ed Stewart go on and on. But the ones that mattered like John Peel and Tommy Vance who despised mainstream pop music and championed the real musicians are now gone. It must be true that; only the good die (relatively)young.

I used to listen to him on BFBS in Germany in the eighties. He sounded like a cheerful bloke. I don't think I would recognise any of the presenters if they sat next to me on the bus in Britain these days!

Just heard that ?64yr old Tommy Vance has died in hospital after a stroke 3 days ago.

He was best known for a 15year stint on the Friday Night Rock Show, on BBC Radio 1, started his career in the US on KHJ, from whence he went on to Radio Caroline. He was seen last year in 'Hells' Kitchen' TV programme about celebs in the kitchen with a high profile chef, which he walked out of after 24 hours, stating safety reasons.

Another stalwart of BBC radio has gone.

I've been trying various links but not been able to find any other news.
