Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: GUEST,Rob Date: 11 Apr 05 - 11:46 AM What a venue! Superb! Worthwhile going just to see it. The gig went well. Thanks very much to Ian Clelland who does a great job on the sound desk. After the Star Club we popped into the Taybank on the Friday and again a fortnight later where we joined in with the regular singarond upstairs. In between the two Fridays Angie did a great gig on the Isle of Rum. Half the population of the island turned up. We will definetely be back to all three venues sometime. until then see you at the Orkney Festival. we will make a pint (sorry, point but then again..) of coming to hear Tarneybackle. And finally The Isle of Rum are having a festival his year May 13,14 and 15th. with Peatbog Faeries and Shoolgelnifty amongst others. Should be great! |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: GUEST,John from Tarneybackle Date: 22 Mar 05 - 03:50 PM Hi Rob, The gig at The Star was great. A very warm and appreciative audience. St Andrews in the Square is a pretty big venue and the acoustics are lively. The Star has a resident sound man - Ian Clelland who really knows his stuff. We are looking forward to returning there in the new year. Re-Orkney. We are delighted to be heading up to the northern isles. Although Sandy gets sea-sick when he takes a bath!!! We believe that we will be playing in one or two outlying islands or areas of the mainland on Thursday and Friday and then in Stromness itself at the weekend. Hopefully, we'll get to share a song or ten with Angie. In the meantime, wishing Angie all the best for Glasgow and Rhum. Cheers John |

It is that very thing that keeps us going and doing what we do. Thanks a bunch for the update and for passing on John's wisdom..... It makes me happy to know that all is well and as it should be back Hame. (wit a wid gie fur a dram in Glencoe the night an a gid blether wi Folks aye a like mind:>) All the Best Jude |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: andymac Date: 09 Mar 05 - 10:14 PM On the subject of Arthur johnstone and The Laggan, I bumped into Arthur recently and he was in fine form. I also had the pleasure of meeting John McDermott in The Kingshouse hotel in Glencoe last weekend and in the company of a hitherto unrealised mutual friend, we all sat and chatted the night away and managed a few wee drinks as well. One thing that John said, which really hit home, in response to a question from someone else about the music scene in Scotland was that "all over Scotland, right now, people will be singing songs and playing traditional music- at home, with friends, in the pub, that's what keeps it going..." Just remembering that keeps me going. Andymac |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: GUEST,Mad Jock Date: 09 Mar 05 - 10:39 AM I saw Angie Wright at the Loch Lomond festival as half of the Taggart and Wright duo last year. She can certainly sing. They were a very accomplished act. |

All the Best Jude Ake...oh aye thronging Crowds of adoring Fans and Top of the Pops in Germany.....right up Arthur's alley...lol.. |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: Scabby Douglas Date: 09 Mar 05 - 06:56 AM The Star morphed into the New Dawn after Arthur handed over and it was run by Kenny Caird for several years. When Ken wanted to move on, the running of the club was taken over by a committe/board, and it moved to Saint Andrews in the Square about two years ago ( I think ). SAinTS is a lovely venue. http://www.standrewsinthesquare.com/ |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: akenaton Date: 09 Mar 05 - 04:01 AM Thanks Judith . Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: Alba Date: 08 Mar 05 - 09:00 PM Ake, Arthur stepped down a while ago now. I couldn't say how he is doing but I hope he is well. Ive been gone from Glasgow for a while now and lost touch with a lot of Folk...as you do...sadly. I think The (new) Star has a Board that runs it now or something like that? The Star has moved from Calton Place to St. Andrew's in the Square. It moved a couple of times over the last few Years. I had some great times in Carlton Place years ago too...Arthur and the "Laggan"....refreshments..hic...and wicked good Music. Hey Kendall if you and your Bride cross the water again and visit Glasgow maybe I could come along and Translate for you!!! I am SURE they loved you at the Star. Blessings Jude |
Subject: RE: The Star Folk Club , Glasgow From: akenaton Date: 08 Mar 05 - 08:29 PM Is Arthur Johnstone still at the "Star". Had an unforgettable night with Arthur and the "Laggan" back in the dim and distant. They had come to perform at a wee pub in Strathlachlan, because of the weather only a handful of punters turned up,but we locked the doors and what a night we had. the lads went through their whole song list ,and threw in as many requests as we wanted. If memory serves, The gig went on till 4.00am with plenty of breaks for refreshments...Ake |
