I remember a song with this title being mentioned once in the Forum as a recent song about the "troubles" in N-Ireland. As far as I know the lyrics have never been posted. I'd love to see them.

Hi Wolfgang, It was written by Tommy Sands and although it reflected the sadness of the troubles it kept an optimistic eye on the future. I have the lyrics on a different computer (not on line). I'll pull them off and get them to you next week.
It was released by Moloney, O'Connell & Keane on their album "Kilkelly".

I'll be interested to see what Jack Murray comes up with. I thought Peter Pan and Me was written by Mickey MacConnell, who wrote "Only Our Rivers Run Free", but I don't recall it being about the troubles so were probably thinking of two different songs?

Phillipa was right. It was written by Mickey MacConnell. I got my writers mixed up. Here are the lyrics.

PETER PAN AND ME
Mickey MacConnell

We knew we faced the power that comes from money
When we marched against the empire's mighty scheme
They were armed with special powers and legislation
while we were armed with youth and foolish dreams
But it seemed so right in Derry all that summer
When we took command and built our barricades
We were an army dressed in faded jeans and sandals
Too young and full of pride to be afraid
And we believed in things like justice, truth & freedom
And we believed we had a right to liberty
And we believed that we could build a new tomorrow
That's how it seemed to Pater Pan and me.

But we soon learned the truth of street rebellion
As our city crumbled round us stone by stone
Betrayed by those that promised they would help us
Against tanks and troops and guns we stood alone
Revolution is no game for foolish dreamers
For dreamers never know the price that must be paid
And before long we learned all power comes from a rifle
And we learned to bleed and die and be afraid
And soon no one spoke of justice, truth or freedom
And soon no one gave a damn for liberty
And all we hoped was that we might go on surviving
We grew up fast, young Peter Pan and me.

Then the empire dealt us death and fear and prison
There's no mercy from that milit'ry machine
And their street kids lost their faded jeans & sandals
For hoods and guns with loaded magazines
Now the years have wrought their cruel retribution
And our brothers and their sisters bear the pain
As both sides strive for violent solutions
And the politicians play their deadly game
And among the dead lie justice, truth & freedom
And among the dead lie hope and liberty
But if you care enough about brave new tomorrows
Pull up a chair, join Peter Pan & me.

Jack Murray ^^

Maybe Wolfgang was thinking of 'Humpty Dumpty Was Killed', written by Tommy Sands. It's not about the Troubles either but about truth and indoctrination in a wider sense, based on the nursery rhyme. Haven't checked whether it's in the DT. - Susanne

Humpty dumpty was pushed, Right ver the garden wall Humpty dumpty was pushed, And nobody knew it at all, all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again...

I didn't try title or phrases in the DT, but I tried Tommy Sands (2 songs, including the beautiful but tragic There were roses) and Colm Sands (nothing). I sometimes mix up which of the two brothers wrote a song. I'd like to get "Whatever you say, say nothing" (..when you talk about you know what, For if you know who should hear you, Yoou know what you'll get/ They'll take you away to you know where for you wouldn't know how long./So for you know who's sake Don't let anyone hear you singing this song) (Tommy?) and the one about "Marching" (Colm?) - that the solution to the parades issue would be to let the marchers parade around a special arena.

Mickey MacConnell has a neat one about politician speak - sometning like "I'm awfully glad you asked me that for at this point in time, Concerning negotiations that are in the pipeline... ...I hope I've made things clear"

Subject: Where the hell is 'Peter Pan and Me'...?
From: Shay Gillian Veno
Date: 03 Nov 99 - 09:45 PM

I am searching for the lyrics to a song I heard on the Mick Maloney album "Kilkenny" It's called "Peter Pan and Me". My first impression was that it was too much without resolve. In remembering some of the lyrics, I've decided to learn it after all, even if it never makes it to our set. However, in classic fashion, I cannot for the life of me find the cd. Does anyone have the lyrics handy? Thanks.

The song was written by Mickey MacConnell, probably better known from other songs as "Only our rivers..", "The Tinkerman's Daughter" etc. As you have probably guessed, the song concerns the uncertain times surrounding the birth of the Civil Rights movement in the north of Ireland. I used to play it with him in the mid eighties; the chords I know still, but alas, with the passage of time, the old short-term memory ain't what it used to be, and I don't have all the words anymore. (well I do, but they wouldn't be in the right order). The only thing I can suggest is to try and get a copy of his own CD, the name of which I am not sure of neither. Some help I am!! Anyway, Shay, I'll keep an eye out for it, but I'm sure you won't be waiting too long before somebody comes up with it.

Not meant as a reproach to you, Shay (truly sorry, if it sound like that), but as a reminder to all of us:
The simple thread title 'Lyric request: Peter Pan and me' finds the old thread (and lyrics) during the process of thread generation (which can be aborted then) whereas the colourful titeling 'where the hell is..' beats the search machine.

Lyrics as follows.

We knew we faced the power that comes from money
when we marched against the empire's mighty schemes.
They were armed with special powers and legislation
while we were armed with youth and foolish dreams.
But it seemed so right in Derry that Sunday
when we took them on and built our barricades.
We were an army dressed in faded jeans and sandals
too young and full of pride to be afraid.
We believed in things like justice, truth and freedom.
We believed we had a right to liberty,
and we believed that we could build a new tomorrow.
That's how it seemed to Peter Pan and me.

We soon learned the truth of street rebellion
as that city crumbled round us stone by stone.
Betrayed by those who promised they would help us
against guns and troops and tanks we stood alone.
Revolution is no game for foolish dreamers,
for dreamers never know the price that must be paid.
We learned that all truth comes from the rifle,
we learned to bleed and die and be afraid.
And soon no-one spoke of justice, truth or freedom
and no-one gave one damn for liberty.
All we hoped was that we might go on surviving.
We grew up fast, young Peter Pan and me.

The empire bought us death and fear and prison.
There's no mercy from that military machine.
So our children swapped their faded jeans and sandals
for hoods and guns with loaded magazines.
Now the years have wrought their cruel retribution
and our brothers and our sisters bear the pain
as both sides search for a military solution
and the politicians play their murderous games.
Among the dead lie justice, truth and freedom,
and among the dead lie hope and liberty.
So if you care enough to mourn brave new tomorrows
pull up a chair, join Peter Pan and me.

I think John Moulden has copies of Micky's tape, and I think it can be ordered through him.

Might as well hear it 'from the horse's mouth', as it were.
