What are some of your favorite rounds to sing or play?

Michelle

My all time favorite round is Nero's Expedition Up the Nile by Moondog. It's almost a test of a friend's musicianship- can they sing it, and will they do it willingly?

Also:
I sat next to the Duchess at tea (as taught me by Kim Wallach of the Short Sisters. She also taught me Nero)

Minimalism (as taught by Nick Page)

Lachen lachen (as sung by Libana)

I've written a few as well; it's fun to try! I wrote a peace round in Arabic and another in Latin (just what the world needs: another Dona Nobis Pacem!)

I'm sure I'll think of others.

Allison

"The New Year's Round' written by Anne Hermann:

Ring it in, ring in the New Year,
Ring it in, ring in the New Year;
Bells are ringing, Bells are ringing,
Bells are ringing, Bells are ringing;
Peace and Love throughout the New Year,
Peace and Love throughout the New Year;
Joy, Joy, Joy
Joy, Joy Joy

It's on Rock Creek's 'Yonder Come Day' CD

Allison, when I saw your post, mentioning "Nero's Expedition," my first thought was, "Hey, I don't remember posting to this thread, but I guess I did!" Because "Nero", written by Moondog, is my favorite round, too. That link you posted didn't work, though. When I (finally) got back to Camp Harmony this year, one of my few regrets was that I didn't get to spend enough time with some of the champion rounds singers, like Lani Herrmann and Deborah Frank. Just enough to make me want a lot more.

Some of my other favorites:

Sweet Rest -- I'm not sure what the real title is. It goes:
Goodnight, goodnight
Time sends a warning call, sweet rest descend to all
Time, time sends a warning call
Sweet rest, sweet rest descend to all

Great Tom is Cast -- really sounds like bells ringing (well, I think it does, anyway)

Ride a Cock Horse

Fuzzy Wuzzy

Albert the Alligator

I agree with Padre's choice of Alix (Anne) Herrmann's New Year's Round. What a joy to sing that one!

Does anybody know the late Jan Harmon's My Friend Sharon? I almost remember it. The words go:

My friend Sharon
Saved an armadillo from a crocodile
One day
My friend Sharon
Saved an armadillo from a crocodile
One day
It was out in Amarillo
Where this vile child
Had an armadillo by the tail
And he would have sent it sailing
To some smiling crocodile
Only Sharon hollered
"Stop! You rotten kid!"
And he did

Aloha,
Mark

Oh, and here are the words to "Nero" -- at least, as I learned them. Supposedly, it came from a passage in a history book.

Nero's expedition up the Nile
Failed
Because the water hyacinths
Had clogged the river
Denying Nero's vessels passage
Through the Sud of Nubia

But the words don't convey the marvelous syncopations and jazz chords in the tune.

Aloha,
Mark

Hey ho Nobody at Home
Meat nor drink nor money have I none,
Yet will I be merry.

'Tis women make us love,
'tis love that makes us sad
'Tis sadness makes us drink
And drinking makes us mad.

Whose pigs are these?
Whose pigs are these?
They are John Potts'
I can tell 'em by their spots
And I found 'em in the vicarage garden

Among others

I like;

On the moor I saw a Plover
And a Curlew called her lover
Peewit Peewit
Spring shall surely come again

and

As I me walked
All on a may morning
I heard a bird sing
Cuckoo

and one which I got from the english translation of a chinese counting game

Peacock feather
On a plum tree limb
You catch me
And I'll catch him

There's a great Welsh one called "Dow hyfryd mis" which can be divided up in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. If I can find it I'll post it.

Joan Mills, a great friend of Frankie Armstrong's, used to start voice workshops with this round as a vocal exercise.

There once was a man from Calcu-u-u-utta
Who had a most terrible stutter.
He said p-p-p-p-please
Pass the ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-cheese
And the bu-bu-bu, bu-bu
Bu-bu, b-bu-bu, bu-bu-bu-bu, bu-bu (pause)
Butter

Two large gentlemen in the pub, one says to the other, "Your round"
The other one said, "So are you, you fat bastard"

I don't know if this very old joke has tune.

Giok
