Right....almost there.

To confirm once more and bring you bang up to date!

Children up the age of 16 will be allowed into the Late Night Extras this year, both the early and late sessions.

News in today.....from Gordon Newton himself....is that children's tickets will be half-price. This is a last minute piece of news and is therefore NOT on the working programme.

Anyone wanting to confirm this information, please ring Sidmouth Tourist Information Centre on 01395 578627 where they will be pleased to give you all the above details, the news having been passed on to them by The Steering Committee this morning.

Thanks.

Hope you all have the most gorgeous time!

Lots of Love

Lizzie :0)

PS...Stevie Scarlett....I don't have a broomstick....I have a magic wand! You silly old elf! ;0) xxx

roseanne, sorry lizzies taking the piss, there are no discos at Bulverton but the ceilidhs are wonderful - look in the programme under activities and select the link.

Are you sure about children at Bulverton events?
The working programme doesn't show reduced prices for LNE which are given in brackets at other venues. The family ceilidh is listed as being at Blackmore gardens (which does show reduced prices for children)

I always thought it was a licencing requirement that children weren't allowed at LNE after-hours events.

Hi Roseanne....it's the 'early' Late Night Extra up at Bulverton, opposite the camp site, high on the hill there...from 8 to 10.30pm.

Children are allowed at both the early and late Late Night Extras this year. The early one is put on more with children in mind though I believe. All children up to the age of 16 will be allowed in BUT they MUST be accompanied by an adult, obviously.

Hope you're able to go and that you have a lovely time, sounds like it's going to be great fun!

Lizzie is offering to sort out these kinds of problems on the Radio 2 board Tattie Bogle maybe she'll do the same on mudcat. It would be good if she came clean about her close relationship to members of the steering commitee and the venues she has been plugging so assiduously.

Oh-oh, my tickets have gone astray. Ordered early June, went on holiday mid-June till last week, leaving house in charge of 21-year-old son. House still standing against all odds, but no tickets on return, so I phoned TIC, who would look into it. They have kindly searched all their recorded delivery records, and now tell me delivery was attempted on 6th July: but we have had no card from Royal Mail to say they've tried to deliver, so they're probably on the way back to Sidmouth! (Checked with sorting office and they only hold recorded delivery items for 7 days before sending back!)
Fortunately I photocopied my order form before sending it and bank statement shows cheque went thro' bank on 14.06.05.

OH! To HELL with the weather Stevie Scarlett.....Show of Hands are coming!!! :0) :0) ;0)

.....AND The Duncan McFarlane Band and Bellowhead, Battlefield Band,..Kathryn Tickell....Last Night's Fun, Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, Black Umfolosi 5 and all the many, many other wonderful acts. Our town will be filled with Musicians, Singers, Dancers, Actors, Story-Tellers, Children's Entertainers, Lemonade Sellers...(Hello Mrs. Lemon!) and the young students from Newcastle Uni ...and the streets will be alive with people just standing on street corners playing fiddles, penny whilstes, guitars and bodhrans...just because they can and they want to...and the sound of the melodeons will drown out the cars...and there'll be colours and ice creams and people in beautiful, zany outfits and those wonderful jester's hats...and hair braiders and tattoo artists, pavement artists and craftspeople.

There'll be a field of tents, in every colour of the rainbow, to be seen from Waitrose car park...and the lights of the campsite shining out in the dark....and the wonderful sounds of music floating down from the Bulverton LNE right through my bedroom window so late at night....and I'll be able to stand in my back garden, look up at the stars and hear the sounds of life as it should be lived....music filling the air and drifting up from the town and the street corners, and people laughing on their way back to the campsite....and The Arena will be empty of stands, but full of people enjoying themselves and seeing that beautiful place as I see it every day in all its' glory!

And dancing in the rain is great fun....and running into the pubs if the clouds open, feeling snug and cosy in The Bedford....listening to the music on The Esplanade if it's sunny, paddling if it's hot, swimming if it's even HOTTER! ;0) Munching cream cakes up in Connaught Gardens if it's windy...warming up in The Marquee with 800 other people if it's cold....hugging all the 800 people if it snows (!!!! :0)..)....and if it hails....well....I might EVEN let YOU share my Show of Hands Brolly Stevie Scarlett.....but that depends on how well you behave on here for the remaining 28 days!!!

AND......MORRIS MEN!!! (sigh!) My town will be FULL of MORRIS MEN!! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......! (And all those Morris Girls too.....I love them as well! ;0)..)

PAH! ;0) WHO NEEDS WEATHER Stevie....we've got Sidmouth Folk Week and we are SO very, very lucky!!!! ;0)

Some background to the LNE turnaround is given on this webpage together with an article from todays Sidmouth Herald, should you need some light reading. All 'old' tickets for the LNE will be honoured and new ones are being printed to align with the Ham and Blackmore designs. Some events at the Ham will soon be sold out so better buy yours now..... Maybe the few old style LNE tickets in circulation will become collectors items??????

http://www.seered.co.uk/folk82.htm

I would be interested if people manage to get a refund from Salcombe camping sites - apparently the Bulverton field can be extended from the one originally intended to be used this year - so there are few limits on numbers, except the Ham marquee can only take 800.....

Just arrange the weather will you Lizzie?? PLEASE.

Better hurry up though..only 28 days to go now....my tickets are under lock and key! ;0)

Steve!

I love rain!.....This is because I now have my new snazzy Show of Hands unbrella! So...if you see someone dancing through the ford on her way down to The Ham, with her tickets clutched firmly in her hand and a huge smile on her face, under her black umbrella with its' cool white writing...that'll be me! ;0) Rain or shine....I'll enjoy myself and so will loads of others. There is even enough room under my brolly for ooh at least three other people to dance!

Oh...and why would I lose my tickets Steve? I've never lost them before....and why wouldn't I want to use my supporters ticket and get my 10% discount?....Taking your sum of £200 as an example would mean I could save £20 and that would allow me to buy some more tickets...or a Battlefield Band CD....AND a DMcF Band one or Dr. Faustus AND Kathryn Tickell...(I'm up to date on Show of Hands at present!)...I could have lunch at The Bedford and listen to the sessions or maybe have 20 ice-creams down on the Esplanade!! Well....maybe not 20....OR that really gorgeous Teddy Bear down in Puddleducks that I've had my eye on for ages! Now we're talking!

Steve....do you realise....I've just thought of this one....do you realise that with the money you're going to save YOU could buy a Show of Hands umbrella and still have loads of money left to buy beer and lemonade and even some fish and chips as well then the two of us could go 'Singin' in the Rain' all around Sidmouth! That would cheer you up no end! ;0)

55 days to go Stevie and you're still sounding a little anxious...here you go then just for you....once more:

"The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances. We carry the seeds of the one or the other about with us in our minds wherever we go."

(Martha Washington 1731-1802 First Lady of the United States)

Lizzie :0)

PS..Actually these quotes are a really good idea because at least part of my posts now make absolute sense as they're written by someone else. Chuckle! ;0)

Yes, we have all known about this website for days..........As I said before, very pretty.

I have just seem some LNE tickets. They contain information about the bus services to this venue - every half hour from the Byes area (near the river crossing in Sidmouth) and via all the campsites. You can also take a car to near the LNE venue and park for free but there is then another Park and Ride bus from that car park to the LNE. This is all separate from the Stagecoach services. I'll update my website shortly. I don't know the size of any venue apart from the Ham at 800+. Anyone know about the LNE?

I did ask Lizzie to have a word with the Weather Gods - what happened? Rain all day and grey skies.

Most important to remember - if you buy discount tickets with a supporters club card to take the card to every venue - without it the ticket will not be valid. Seems an inherently risky idea - lose one tiny card and your pile of tickets for £200 becomes invalid and you can't buy another supporters card? Best maybe not to bother with one at all - you only save 10% off some tickets!

Steve,

I do remember Gordon Newton telling you, at the Sidmouth Meeting a few months back, that Roy was 'doing his own thing' and had chosen not to be a part of everything else, in fact I seem to recall Gordon going out of his way to explain it all personally to you in as great a depth as he was able.

Don't worry about the Sidmouth TIC, Steve....I'm quite sure they've got everything well under control. We went in there the other day and they seemed to know exactly what they were doing. We were served most efficiently and politely, not an ounce of panic or confusion to be seen anywhere.

56 days to go and another thought for you Steve to cheer you up! "Always look on the bright side of life" (Monty Python) ;0)

Yes, I know all about Ray Goodswen's events http://www.seered.co.uk/folk47.htm EXCEPT no-one seems to know yet which groups and callers are on when and where, so it is difficult to plan which days to opt for a £16 Goodswen ticket and which days to concentrate on the 'in town' events. Ray was still handing out his original format leaflets at Chippenham - although where he proposes to put 300 dancers in the venues now on offer is a good question. I have asked him for clarification - I am not the only person in Sidmouth (and I suspect elsewhere) who is pondering just how many tickets to buy in advance and for which days. If you are not interested at all in the Goodswen events then it is now easy - except for the poor lady in the Sidmouth TIC - piles of books of so many different tickets she hardly knows where to look for them. When lots of postal applications start to arrive the fun will really start. So far it has been mostly locals buying - and quite briskly so I am told.

What "more information" are you wanting ?
On the folkweek website, click on "browse by activity" to get a dropdown menu for ceilidhs in town, latenight extras at Salcombe, and workshops. These give locations, start times and ticket prices. Advance tickets are available from Sidmouth tourist information, see
http://www.sidmouthfestival.org.uk/booking

The D4D social dance series organised by Roy Godswen has stayed aloof from the rest of the folkweek. It isnt participating in the supporters discount scheme, and if I remember rightly was aiming to sell a maximum of 300 of its own series tickets and not get involved with tickets on the door for individual events. They don't seem to be keen on publicising their events to outsiders, so presumably have achieved their target ticket sales.

I think that the NEW Sidmouth Folk Week website is just the most gorgeous and informative site I've ever seen!! All those colours! All that purple! All those fantastic zooming piccies....that kept me fair mesmerised....Show of Hands zooming in and out..Brilliant!! (Why don't you have them on your website Stevie?) ;0)

And...it's so EASY now to find out what you want to know, that even I can do it!! I've been reading all about the Concerts and the Ceilidhs and I'm just about to go back in and read up all about Young Sidmouth in a moment, when I finished this.

I think they should call it 'Seepurple' in honour of you Stevie...I do!

Right, just a quickie message tonight... as I have a very important website to go and read Stevie.....and it's PURPLE! :0) ;0) Then I have to look at my tickets for Show of Hands again..and The Battlefield Band...and The Duncan McFarlane Band....and Bellowhead...and......

Got to dash!

Lizzie - how about 59 days of realism? Some sunshine would help too. It's cold, wet and pouring with rain. Please go find your broomstick, sail aloft, have a word with the Weather Gods and make us all happy.

I'm having the same problem as many other people deciding which tickets to buy - I don't know what social dances are on when, and what workshops are on when. So how do I plan my week? Buy everything and waste maybe 60 or 80 of tickets when I find out about the other events? I am sure lots of families on a budget will be doing that. I admire your spirit but it's a big bad real world out there.

It is fine leaving a lot of programme details to the last minute when there is an all-embracing season ticket on offer, you can pick and choose when you get here. No criticism of the organisers - I know they have worked their socks off and are putting up risk capital. People who intend to centre their week on concerts or sessions can buy now - and I hope they do. Dancers (and there are usually a lot at Sidmouth) still do not have all the necessary information.

And why is my computer doing daft things with pounds signs??££

I shall phone the box office tomorrow to clarify my queries posted above, and let you know the outcome. There are at least 6 concerts I'm interested in and I don't think they're over-priced compared with what I pay for other festivals or folk concerts elsewhere. But I do love the session scene too, esp Middle bar singers and the Bedford, and I'm sure these will do as well as in previous years as there are many committed people about who will still be there this year.

Well now I've seen it all!

We're used to Lizzie attacking all and sundry but why or why is John 'Giok' MacKenzie accusing musicians of charging too much and accusing Gordon Newton of booking too many acts.

You just can't win!

Most folk musicians charge very low fees. Often just enough to get them to the gig and pay for their food and living expenses. I should know. I've performed at Sidmouth many times over the past 25 years and always for less than I'd charge elsewhere.

Gordon Newton has worked his butt off trying to keep a folk event alive in Sidmouth and now even his so-called friends are attacking him!

With friends like Lizzie and 'Giok' Sidmouth doesn't need enemies.

I'm disgusted with the lot of you. Sidmouth deserves better!

Stevie,

Now listen my little 'Doubting Thomas', it sounds to me as if you're getting yourself all worked up again. You need.....an inspirational quote.....and luckily for you Steve....I have the perfect one.

"No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the horizon of the spirit."

Helen Keller 1880-1968

Now Helen, being both blind and deaf would not have been able to see or hear the beauty of a Folk Festival as we can Stevie, but she would have been able to sense the joy that is around when a Festival (or a Folk Week) is taking place. She would have always looked on the positive side of things, she would have believed that anything was possible, that is why she achieved what she did in her life. She became someone for many other people to look up to and admire. She discovered the 'secrets of the stars' and took her spirit to a thousand places that no-one had ever dreamed she would ever be able to reach.

You have to have faith to get through life and you have to spread that faith around so that it touches other people and affects them too. It goes for everything in life, no matter what it is.

So Stevie, why not put all this behind us.....why don't you now become the most positive person around, where the Sidmouth Folk Week is concerned? Why not use your website, from now on, to promote everything about Sidmouth in the most confident light you possibly can.

There are now just 59 days left to go. Think how wonderful it would be to have:

59 days of Encouragement, 59 days of Enthusiasm, 59 days of Positivity

Just think........

Lizzie - I'm just back from Chippenham - three and a half days for £65 including camping (say £20 per day, all in) except that as a steward I got my ticket for free. But I did have to be on duty for several hours each morning watching other people dance - most distressing. Even worse was not seeing you there. ... I've missed you so much recently. I really have...... The main dances were packed and the evening concerts were usually House Full. Several ATMs ran out of cash so I guess the town did well.

I discussed Sidmouth in detail with several people and told a lot more about it. Everyone who had seen the latest Sidmouth leaflet said the organisers have done a fantastic job but that when you work out the total daily/weekly cost it looks high - you need to pick your events in advance if you are to be sure of getting tickets. Several people wanted to know how big it was planned to be - what is the planned capacity of the Blackmore marquee? And the LNE? We know the Ham is planned for 800+ for concerts. The social dance was planned for up to 300 over 3 venues before the main (largest) of these became unavailable.

I have updated the social dance page on SeeRed http://www.seered.co.uk/folk47.htm to include details of refunds for people who now want to do a mix of social dance and ceilidhs and added bus ticket info. http://www.seered.co.uk/folk51a.htm The Stagecoach leaflet is confusing with no mention of the (separate?) LNE buses and a Gold Rider ticket which appears to do all the special festival week ticket does (and more) for the same price??. Except that you can save a whopping £2 by booking the festival one in advance. Out of interest I tried the enquiry number - it was locked in a hopeless answerphone loop.

As for Sidmouth, everything now depends on how many people calculate the overall daily cost of doing everything they want to do (higher than at most other festivals?) and how many say "sod the expense we are coming to support the Sidmouth organisers" - except that much of the money may not be going to do that anyway! Social Dance tickets are still £90 despite the decreased quality of venue, the Ham season is £135, LNEs are £63, and camping for the week could be £40 - add in a couple of evening ceilidhs and you are up to £350. Little wonder ticket sales are off to a slow start - people need to sit down, study the programme and decide what to buy.

Credit must go to Gordon Newton who has organised the Ham events - if it goes well he might make a profit and he has said he will give this to Sidmouth 2006. If he makes a loss, he will have to find it from his own pocket. Details on http://www.seered.co.uk/folk77.htm   So much else would (I guess) not have been organised at all if he had not come forward to help - and he doesn't even live here. So support the Ham events whatever else you plan to do. And support the locally organised ceilidhs in Blackmore Gardens - every evening from 8 pm.

See you there Lizzie??

By the way, take a look at the latest sidmouth website -
http://www.sidmouthfestivalcrafts.co.uk In past years many craft sales may have been to 'casual day visitors' who were drawn by the 'international' scale of the week. This year, who knows!

I echo entirely what John Barden says.

We've got all our tickets. Hurray!!! They are safe in the drawer and just itching to be used. Show of Hands were the first we booked up as well. (No surprises there then!!) ;0)

'Guest Observer' above, I hope you went ahead and booked your tickets for Show of Hands as they've just completed their first ever tour where every venue was sold out....so you really don't have to worry, it won't just be you and me in that marquee! They are playing on their home ground down here in The West Country and the final day of this tour was just two days ago at The Barnfield Theatre in Exeter, where they played to a packed-out audience, many, many of whom will be coming to see them at Sidmouth, along with all the other artists too.

I've phoned the Tourist Information Centre to double check what was said above and apparently the rooms are filling up fast....well...no surprises there either! ;0) Most of the B&B's are full, but they do have an 'additional list' of ordinary townspeople who still have some rooms left to let out during Folk Week. They'd be happy to send out that list if anyone wants it. The Tourist Information telephone number is: 01395 578627. Also some of the big hotels still have rooms but the TIC said that this is entirely normal, as people have always booked into the B&B's and cheaper accommodation first.

I've heard as well, that all 17,000 Folk Week Programmes have now been given out and a whole pile more are already being printed. Well done to the people who designed that programme, by the way, you've done a truly excellent job!

In fact well done to them all. They've had an incredibly hard job to do, under very difficult circumstances and they've really excelled themselves.

Hi John 'Giok' and also Mrs. Annie - I've deliberately kept away from saying anything as the 'Sidmouth knockers' will always be around. Suffice to say that all the people who will be there will be people who want to be there because it's a great place to hold a festival. If you let the 'knockers' put you off you will be missing a lovely place (Sidmouth), some great concerts and a plethora of sessions full of really nice people. I've been going for quite a few years now and am really looking forward to supporting the new organisation. They deserve all our thanks for what they have done to keep the spirit of Sidmouth alive. Don't worry - I know some will be on soon to knock this post -I will ignore them as I hope you do. Tatty Bogle did say he/she would go to sessions instead when his/her chosen concerts were sold out, which would be the case with most people who want to go to concerts, I would have thought.

In that case their going to sessions would have zero financial effect on the concert side of the festival.

I've also just got the programme and agree with Tattie Bogle that the ticketting arrangements are very confusing (although the brochure itself is very well produced).

If many people follow Tattie's example and don't pay for concert tickets until they arrive in Sidmouth then that could create a cash-flow problem for the concert organisers who will rely on advance sales to pay artist deposits and advance infrastructure costs etc.

If many people prefer the sessions to the concerts then those cash-flow problems are all the greater. Who pays the artists and suppliers this year if ticket income and Hobgoblin sponsorship prove insufficient to cover costs?

Is there a risk of concerts being cancelled leaving just the sessions for people to enjoy?

Well I'm still going: just got the programme, but sorry I won't be buying a season ticket for the Ham as there are other good concerts in other venues which would not be covcered by said season ticket.
I'm also slightly confused as the Sidmouth Folk week supporters' ticket allows me priority booking up to 1st June - day after tomorrow, but I only received it yesterday: doesn't give me much time to decide.
It also has the wrong name on it. (Involves a gender change!)
And does the reduced (supporters')rate ONLY apply to tickets bought before 1st June or to any purchased thereafter? Not clear!
So I shall probably leave buying tickets till I get there, and if my chosen concerts are sold out, I shall just go to the sessions.

Not this year they don't!

When I cancelled my booking on Sunday having finally decided to give Sidmouth a miss this year the landlady told me I was not the only one to have cancelled. She said three of her seven rooms are still available for Folk Week adding she'd never known that happen before.

Seems people are voting with their feet and attendances may not be anything like normal.

I am not sure what the geography of Sidmouth has to do with tickets - those of us who live here have had printed programmes for days - I don't know what the official website is up to. I've put a few details on http://www.seered.co.uk/folk51a.htm

As for geography, Bulverton is one side of Sidmouth at the top of a steep hill to the northwest. The LNE is on the other side up a steeper and bigger hill, to the east. Walking, I would guess inside an hour and you would be fit by the time you got there.

No worried,

Not a folk week to replace a festival, a festival of a different sort, to replace the big gap that would otherwise have been left.

You may not be a fan, but that fact does not affect the status of Sidmouth 2005, only your view of it.

GUEST 01:15,

Close, but no coconut, my friend. You should have remembered that Sidmouth was a folk week, before it was an international festival, before it was a folk week, and, whether you like it or not, all three are festivals. What goes around comes around, and that's why we are your best hope to see the festival YOU enjoyed come to life again.

If those who loved the old Sidmouth (and I'm one of them) had all got behind our efforts, and given a good shove, we might even have been closer to that happy day.

Ah well!

'Scarlett' is a ploy to make money on the back of the original, by someone who had nothing to do with the original. Not unlike the Folk Week.

In it Scarlett goes to Ireland having alienated her peer group by her behaviour. She has no sympathy for the community she has joined. She is disdainful of their ways and behaves like a patronising incomer. Eventually they burn down her house and she has to be rescued by a man.

She sounds like your sort of girlie.

Like Sidmouth was a Festival before it was a Folk Week.

Woops! Didn't realise I'd put that!!! I wondered what you were going on about.....thought you were even more batty than me! ;0) Gosh....NO WONDER you were worried! Now I'm worried too! "A long green dressing" You're right...I must have been a surgeon in a previous life!

Shan't wear THAT to Siddy Folk Week! ;0)

Oh 'Worried'...lighten up! 'Tis just a film and a bit of fun! ;0) Tell you what though....you sound as if you love it even more than I do....you'll have to come to Sidmouth and we can watch it together in our lovely cinema. You can have cups of tea in our Picture House! You can be Rhett and I'll be Scarlett! ;0) Would you wear that gorgeous white suit and hat that Rhett had, with a black tie, that was rather snazzy I always thought! Anyway....I'd have stayed with Rhett anyday....that Ashley Wilkes was a bit of a wimp if you ask me! Never did know WHAT she saw in him.

It's because the tickets are coming soon and my little head can't take the sheer thrill of it all!

'Tis the tickets I tell you! The tickets! ;0)

AND....ONLY 70 DAYS TO GO!!! (I'll never make it!) ;0)

'Gone With The Wind'.....reminds me of that thread where apparently the marquee was going to blow down, do you remember that one? That did make me giggle! Got at least three more wrinkles in that thread! ;0)

Now no more talk of Rhett Butler, 'tis all having a strange effect on me!

Lizzie :0)

Lizzie, 'a long green dresssing' suggests to me a bandage coming loose from a festering sore.

Scarlett O'Hara made the dress to try to trick money out of Rhett Butler. She was ashamed of being honest about the reality of her circumstances. A bit like you with the Folk Week methinks, a make do and mend festival to replace a real one.

Scarletts ploy failed as Rhett seen right through her tricks, she then went off and stole her sisters fiance. I can see why you admire her, she was given to hissy fits too and only ever seen things from her own point of view.

STEVIE!!!! Do you know, it's been SO long since I've 'seen' you that I've missed you! I have! ;0)

Now listen, you were supposed to be INSIDE the caravan, not UNDERNEATH it!! That's why you're feeling so down! ;0) What a way to spend your holipops! You must be so hunched up by now! I know a very good osteopath down in Temple Street....don't panic! ;0)

Good job you live in Sidmouth and can walk down to the beach from your house. Nice and warm down this end of town.....bit chillier in Sidford though I hear.

Stevie Scarlett.....are you sure you weren't making me 'see red' the other day? ;0);0) Did you like the free plug I gave you? I thought that was rather kind of me.

Sunshine and Sparkles? I'll see what I can do? I've got a Harry Potter wand here that glows in the dark! Or a light saber, if you'd prefer.....two actually....we could maybe duel on the beach? ;0)

Have you seen that fantastic new furniture/gifty shop in town yet? They were putting the name up yesterday...looks great! Probably not a Boysie type of shop though....good for us Girlies mind! ;0)

'Worried Guest' above. No, I haven't gone completely insane, yet (!) It's a beautiful picture to have, honestly! Scarlett O'Hara made that wonderful dress out of those rich green velvet curtains in the film....you remember! And I was quoting sweet Rhett Butler...and well....one thing led to another and well....all I need is for Ashley Wilkes to turn up now and I am done for! ;0)

Hmmmmm....You're right....Maybe I am a smidgeon dotty! ;0) Just don't tell anyone though! ;0) But please, just SO don't send me to Casualty.....last time I went there I was there for FIVE hours before we even SAW a Doctor. (There must be a Saw Doctors joke there, somewhere!) I thought it was because they were busy, but now I think about it....maybe they were just plain terrified!!! ;0)

Too much excitement at the thought of those tickets coming out soon. There we are....back on thread.

Quote from Lizzie: ""I was wondering where Stevie Scarlett had gone.....think I just found him....the little red minx!""

Just for your information Lizzie, I have been away from my computer and underneath a caravan. Some of what you say is very thoughtful but most of it is repetitious and trivial. By the way, any post from me is under this name and only this name.

I said a long time ago (months ago) that people might well be put off by the total cost of tickets this year once these became known. As of now, I have firm information only on the social dance tickets. My opinions of these have been on my SeeRed website for a long time.

Once all the ticket sales actually start and we have a full list of availability, that will the time for further informed comment.

Could you possibly use your influence on the weather please? I've had enough of the cold wind and the rain. We need some sunshine and sparkles. Please wave your wand.

Can we please get back to this thread being about tickets at sidmouth, and the news info and support likewise being limited to the items in its title.

I am fed up of the ranting and rambling which contribute nothing to attract anyone to sidmouth events, and I am appalled at statements that people such as the McBrides and the Giggs are not welcome at the festival. Every ticket sold is a contribution toward a full festival in the future.
Thank goodness the vast majority of people who usually come to sidmouth aren't wasting their time reading the mudcat verbiage.

"Be my huggable best!!!!!!!!!!" Right Frank DUCK!!!!! Duck under someting so big and so heavy that I will never find you! OooooooooH!!!!

Frank.....just taken you out of my Hugs book darling!

So NOT into men who want to control women! If you want me to be cutesy pie, laugh a minute all the time, well you picked the wrong lady. As for putting me in the same bracket as Diane, well thanks for that Frank! Hey....I'm sorry you stood up for me as well! Sheesh!

There is ONE thing that Diane and I do have in common...ONE thing...and that is passion! We both get beside ourselves sometimes with rage, but the things that upset us are VERY different! I would never, ever say the things that Diane says and if you are prepared to hang, draw and quarter me for telling a ficticious, meddling poster to 'Push Off' well, honeybunch....you just go right ahead!

I have my views, you have yours. You may choose to see the McBrides as real posters. I know what that post is truly about and many more, like the revolting one above from 'Guest Logged Out' which I will not even respond to.

But I know how hard people are working down here and if I so choose to let posters like that 'have it' now and again, that is my freedom of choice. And believe me Frank I will continue to rant as I so choose, without foul language or foul accusations, but a little bad temper or humour to those who try to undermine Sidmouth is not a bad thing!

So you go and tell someone else off, if that makes you feel good! Look back on loads of Siddy threads and you will see me ranting and raving to all sorts of Mudcat 'Characters'....take a look at Seereds site, where you will find loads of my words that he takes off here and puts on his own site, with little cryptic comments underneath.

Hey Stevie Scarlett, a free plug!! Hope you appreciate that! ;0)

'SeeRed' Frank, as you don't seem to know, is one of the main ringleaders behind the Sidmouth 'Meddling' campaign. Now, Stephen Wozniak, his real name which he is quite happy to reveal on his site, Stephen and I have had ermm.....a busy time over the past year, he comes on and muddles things up, creates doubt and chaos, puts his site details on and then goes away. He comes back, under many different guises, does the same thing and goes away!

And then I come in, along with quite a few other people and try to sort it out, with humour, sometimes with a bit of ranting....either way...Stevie Scarlett, who lives in my town, and I know what is going on!

But you Frank.....take the biscuit!! If you want me to be a Stepford Wife and just say what you want me to say, think as you want me to think, behave as you want me to behave and do as you want me to do...well tough! Too much Spanish blood in me Frank to keep my mouth shut for too long! Too much passion! I throw my arms around when I talk and when I speak! I will not be moulded into your 'view' of how I should be!

If I did not have this personality I would not be able to put up with all the things that get said about me. So...I may rant for a bit yet Frank, I may not, I may go away altogether,(cheers all round ;0)..) as Sidmouth is now in safe hands all round, I may not! (groans! ;0)...)

But whatever I choose to do Frank I will do because I want to and not because I am frightened that you will end up not liking me or that you have decided to call me a 'Bitchy Adult'

I've been through far too much with my children to worry about what anybody thinks anymore. I am very much my own person....go tread on someone else Frank!

Oh and if you've got the guts to apologise for anything that you've said Frank, then I may well completely change my opinion of you, however I don't think you're going to do that somehow!

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go and sort out a Show of Hands thread over on Radio 2....I may also throw a few plates at the wall to get my 'Frank Anger' out a little!

Marches off in Scarlett O'Hara mode with long green dressing flaring out behind her!

Lizzie....look Frank....NO SMILEY!

I've just read Lizzies post with utter disbelief.

As a long time supporter of Sidmouth I'm boycotting this years 'folk week' along with many others because I'm of the view that that will be the only way the Sidmouth traders, council and residents will realise the true value of the festival to their town.

Maybe Lizzie doesn't know that punters NOT buying a season ticket was a part of the problem. To cherry pick only the events you wanted to go to but take advantage of the free events meant that the economics just didn't add up, the cross-subsidy meant only season ticket holders contributed to the invisible costs, insurance, risk assesment and so on, although everyone got the use of them.

I take exception to Lizzie slagging others off too. I use Longdogs and used to use the BBC board, now you can't mention Sidmouth without her swooping down on you and we SOH fans can't use the BBC board because of all the bad feeling Lizzie has caused. Diane is a caustic so and so, but Lizzie takes every opportunity to provoke her, I'm surprised it's taken people so long to notice Lizzies nasty side. It's been obvious to me for months.

The off topic stuff above, about her children goes to show that Lizzie espouses the 'do as I say, not as I do' view. To have to listen to her talk about bullies, when she herself is bullying anyone with a different point of view, across every folk messageboard is breathtaking in it's lack of insight and empathy. Lizzie is one of the biggest bullies I've ever encountered.

I remember Lizzie saying she didn't go to the festival last year because she was ill and the year before she was bored till she heard Show of Hands. Even then, part of her interest in them is that she fancies Steve Knightley, which has bugger all to do with the music. One of the things Diane often objects to is the sexist nature of Lizzies postings. I find it refreshing that folk musicians are judged on talent instead of looks, unlike Lizzie.

So Lizie coming on here and spouting thousands of words of nonsense is irritating, to say the least. I think Lizzie has replaced the Sealed Knot with Sidmouth, but this isn't a battle, it's a folk festival and folkies are like everyone else, good people, bad people and everthing in between. It's the music which is important not the personalities.

Maybe the young people of Sidmouth are vomiting up their souls, my children and their friends are wonderful I've never been anything other than proud of them, they don't like folk music much and are off to Reading this year. Since they're happy and well adjusted, I have no experience of the despair which plays such a large part in Lizzies family. I would hope I would never be so stupid as to think all the ills in the world could be sorted by listening to folk music. To say so is the most nonsensical thing I have ever seen posted on the internet.

I also take exception to the fact Lizzie has named a poor unfortunate girl who took her own life on here. I don't know if this story is true, but to arrogantly mention it in passing, with no thought that the family are entitled to their privacy and that it has fuck all to do with this topic shows just how much disdain Lizzie has for the pain of others. You should be ashamed of yourself Lizzie.

Logged off, because I have no intention of becoming Lizzies next victim.

Just let me say that, if you have really decided not to come, I for one will be saddened beyond measure. I was looking forward, with real pleasure, to hearing much more of you than was possible at Donisthorpe at Easter time.

Please reconsider that decision, as your presence would enhance the sessions for myself, as for others, and by then all the infighting will be over and the craic will be the order of the day.

Hopefully

Whoops! Sorry! Pressed wrong button so there's a blank message from us above.

Here's what we meant to say.

After weeks of not reading mudcat we made the mistake of looking at a post from Lizzie this morning and, hey presto! She's attacking us again!

What have we done to deserve such bile?

To recap from months ago. We are Sidmouth fans. We love the Festival. We want to see a proper Festival again in 2006. But for many reasons we are not attending the Folk week this year.

Surely we should not be condemned by Lizzie for this?

Looking at other posts we fear that Lizzie is deterring people from attending Sidmouth instead of encouraging us back.

We rather wonder if she is actually one of the 'moaning minnies' she claims to detest.

is she really a supporter of the Folk Week?

If so she has a very strange way of showing it.

Please don't attack us again when you've never met us Lizzie.

All you are doing is making us think twice about ever returning to Sidmouth if the Festival we have loved is now in the hands of such bitter and sniping individuals as yourself.

Subject: RE: Sidmouth Tickets
From: Lizzie in beautiful Sidmouth

Frank....come over here and sit down and I'll tell you a story.

This is the story of a folk week, one that many people never wanted to happen and one that many people did. And so.....they went into battle. Sidmouth was verbally kicked, stabbed, bruised, spat on and poisoned, as were the people who stood up for it.

However, the people who wanted the folk week, because they saw through all the hurt, the anger and realised that something so very precious was at stake, chose to ride through all that hatred.

Now, at times it has been hellish for many of us. I'm sure that more than one person who has been so 'verbally abused' has thought "I've had enough....no more!"...but Frank....they stayed. They did! And I have nothing but the utmost respect for them all.

Do not ask me to have respect for the people who have tried so hard to undermine Sidmouth. They have twisted and confused, they have tried to wipe out people, they have tried to wipe out Sidmouth!

If you read Robbie Wilson's summing up of 'The McBrides' post and take a step back you may see that Robbie has hit it right on the head, he can see exactly what I see and what Lynne sees. We have been dealing with the 'Moaning Minnies' and the 'Sidmouth Stirrers' for neary a whole year now! We can smell them out Frank.

First of all, very few people book themselves into Mudcat as Mr. and Mrs. anything! Well....apart from the infamous 'Mr. and Mrs. Gigg' who appeared in the 'Who is not going to Sidmouth' thread...I packed them off too! ;0)

I am done with people coming on here and putting down foul words about Sidmouth, Frank. If you care deeply enough you will see through it all as well. I tell you what...if The McBrides would like to tell me where they were booked in for their alleged visit to Sidmouth, I'll see if I can find them somewhere better value, it may be hard, because the town and campsite are both getting booked up fast now, but if they REALLY want to come to Sidmouth, I'm sure they'd do anything NOT to miss it!!

And don't have a go at Lynne, obviously you know her, but Lynne has been an absolute Sidmouth Guardian Angel. She too has been spat upon by Diane, she too has fended off some pretty unpleasant words. I have a deep respect for Lynne and many others who have done the same.

Diane loathes me from the Radio 2 board, pure and simple. She loathes Show of Hands, she loathes the fact that I have put many, many positive words down on the Radio 2 board about them. She has done everything she can possibly think of to get rid of me, even down to calling me a racist, a facist, insulting my children, calling me thick, dull, stupid and pornographic! (amongst other things!) And all on a BBC board! Hey, that's nice isn't it? However, if you choose to see Diane's view of me, so be it Frank...it is entirely your choice. I will not lose sleep over it, for long ago I put on my Eleanor Roosevelt knickers, which have Eleanor's wonderful words on them...."No-one has the right to make you feel inferior without your consent!" Diane does not and never will have my consent, neither does Fiona and neither do you or anyone else.

And so....today as I write this there is, once again, a group of brilliant people in my town Frank. The Sidmouth Folk Week Committee are right at this minute, as I type, meeting, yet again, down in The Arts Centre in Sidmouth. They have, once more, given up their week-end to plan Sidmouth Folk Week, so that everyone will have the best time possible and it will all go as smoothly as possible. Some of them have come twice the distance that you were planning to come to Sidmouth, hundreds and hundreds of miles, over and over again...for one reason...Sidmouth Folk Week and keeping Sidmouth alive!

But, unlike other festival organisers, they have had to this under a huge torrent of verbal abuse on messageboards, they have put in their time, their own money, their love, for something they believe in deeply! They long ago turned away from Mudcat, as it was causing them distress, quite understandably! They have put their heads down and just 'got on with the job' and they have moved this festival forwards to a place where no-one dreamed it would be. Other people would have walked away from all this hatred and criticism, but they didn't, they stayed and so Frank I have the deepest admiration for them...the very deepest!! And THEY and THAT is why I stay on here and take the verbal abuse....because I believe in them and I believe in Sidmouth.

Now for my children! Of course you must have realised that I'm not 19! My two children are 10 and 18. They came out of school about 3 years back now. Between the bullying and the craziness of the National Curriculum, which is putting unheard of pressures on teachers, who are passing that on to our children, they basically began to fall apart. My daughter, in particular, couldn't see a way out! This beautiful spirit that I had made stay on in school, because I thought there was no option, lost her will to live basically! Her soul was crushed by it all, as are many other young peoples. It has taken me three long years to resurrect her spirit and it now shines bright and clear. She has no GCSE's....she has turned her back upon all exams, she wants no part of them. She is one of the most intelligent people I know, I am extremely, heart-breakingly proud of her in every single way it is possible to be. A colleague of hers from Tavistock College, a young girl called Stephanie, has recently committed suicide. There but for the grace of God.......

My son is dyslexic, he was already being shouted at for gettting 2 out of 10 in his spellings....he was SIX years old at the time. He was kicked, half-strangled, teased, bullied beyond comprehension! He is a kind, quiet lad who also now has a spirit that shines out! He will probably not take exams either, unless he so chooses. Again, an intelligent, lively, loving young lad with a passion for life and a warm view of all people.

And Frank, when I look around me and see so many broken spirits, so many young people on our streets vomiting up not only alcohol, but their very souls at times, I see a society that is no longer working. A society that seems to have abandoned its' young people for profit! Read John Gatto's 'Dumbing Us Down' about the American Education system and how EVERYTHING that is happening over here happened over there, (and sadly is still happening now) about five, ten years ago. It is all there in a short, concise book, written by a man who was a teacher for 30 years!

BUT, when I go to Folk Festivals I see society at its very best, as it once used to be, old teaching young, young teaching old, all dancing, singing, enjoying TOGETHER. I see people who can be free to be themselves, who have found a joy in life and life SHOULD be joyful! And THAT is another reason why I have chosen to fight for Sidmouth and if anyone out there doesn't like it or is prepared to undermine what Sidmouth is about.....then just now and again Frank I will damn well pack them off with a flea in their ear!!

I've read through all your Sidmouth posts and you have always gone on about people having a sense of humour, well look at the way I normally try to fight off the moaning minnies, with humour, but just occasionally, and I was expecting it over the tickets, things go a little too far and I react accordingly.

So to all those who choose to say unpleasant things about Sidmouth or about me and others on here...well I always did fancy the cotton socks of that Rhett Butler, so I'll leave you with his words:

"Frankly my dear....I don't give a damn!" ;0)

Lizzie :0)

PS...I hope we can still be 'friends' after all this mix-up Frank, for I realise that this sort of 'mix-up' is exactly what the moaning minnies want to happen.

Why does Lizzie have to be nasty to everyone who decides, for whatever reason, not to go to Sidmouth this year?

For the simple reason that she is a nasty person. Seen through by all except those with similar leanings. Her exclamation marks and smiley faces are hiding nothing. Her message comes through loud and clear to anyone with more than a couple of brain cells. I don't think either fiona or diane were in the wrong in expressing their opinions. It actually endorsed what alot of people are already saying, but can't be bothered to put in writing and be met with the manic ravings of an exceedingly sad individual.

I agree entirely with Lizzie...we do not need people who are determined to see only the negative and obviously have no desire or intention to enjoy the week and have fun. There will be enough of us who ARE going to enjoy it and are really looking forward to it.

Sorry Lynne but this time I have to disagree with you. The more I see of Lizzie's posts, the more I realise that she can be every bit as nasty as Countess Richard. The McBrides were not anti-Sidmouth, they had already booked their accomodation to come and then realised that the whole thing was going to be too expensive. They did not come over to me as moaning minnies but as disappointed punters. Lizzie did not have to be pleased that they are no longer coming, she should have been disappointed that fans have been put off. After all, she does not have to travel nearly 200 miles as you and I do. She's already there. Why does Lizzie have to be nasty to everyone who decides, for whatever reason, not to go to Sidmouth this year?

She's nuts I tell you. Bonkers. Completely stark, raving mad.

Luckily....I'm usually to be found rolling around the floor with laughter at some of the things that get put on here! And I'm telling you.....with my sense of humour.....they wouldn't ever dream of letting me into the church hall in the first place! ;0)

In fact, over this last year I've laughed so much that my wrinkles now start at the corners of my eyes and go right down the side of my face!! The things I've sacrificed for Sidmouth! And I'm only 19!! ;0)

Thanks for your sweet post though. Very thoughtful of you to bother to put it on.

*sigh....how many times does the same thing have to be pointed out to people before they get it fixed in their heads? This year is a ONE OFF because there was not the time or money to organise the festival on anything like the same basis as usual. Next year it will be a proper festival again instead of "folk week". You cannot expect it to be a totally smooth and polished organisation in the time that was available and with no money on which to do it. Personally, I think a tremendous job has been done in getting it organised to the extent that it has been.

I agree entirely with Lizzie...we do not need people who are determined to see only the negative and obviously have no desire or intention to enjoy the week and have fun. There will be enough of us who ARE going to enjoy it and are really looking forward to it.

Dear Fellow Sidmouth Resident,

I've managed to get Mr. and Mrs. McBride to put you in the back of their car and take you down to Hampshire or Kent with them! Isn't that just the most wonderful news!!! It cost me quite a bit, but trust me, I think it's worth every penny! ;0) I've even packed a picnic for you to eat on your journey. I do hope you like spam sandwiches. ;0)

I think, just to be on the safe side, that it is probably best to leave town as quickly as possible, as Mr. and Mrs. McBride's car is a bit of an old banger (apparently!) and you may have to push it for part of the way, but at least you'll have some miserable company to keep you happy. ;0) Mr. and Mrs. McBride are so pleased that you are leaving town that they volunteered to come all the way down from their home town to pick you up and take you to whichever festival they eventually decide upon! What good people!

This will now mean that yet another groaning 'Folk Week Basher' has left Sidmouth and it will leave one more space for a vibrant, optimistic and loving person to come to my town who will make certain that they enjoy Folk Week to the full. ;0)

Oh! If, when you finally reach Hampshire or Kent, you are blessed with an overwhelming desire to stay there, do please let me know and I will ask Potburys to forward all your furniture on for you.

Always like to help wherever possible.

Bon Voyage!

What a well-argued post from alan J and what a silly post from loony Lizzie cheering at the news that people are NOT coming to Sidmouth.

Lizzie dear gal, why do get such a perverse delight from seeing people leave Sidmouth? Surely you should be trying to bring them to Sidmouth?

I too think the cost of a season ticket for the Ham marquee is ridiculously expensive at £135.

As others have pointed out, last year's week-long season ticket at £160 got you into everything, not just one venue.

I fear this is just another example of the lack of co-ordinated planning for this year's Folk Week.

Each individual promoter is only concerned with his or her own interests and to hell with the rest of the festival (whoops, Folk Week).

As I've said so many times before, some of us Sidmouth residents want to see a proper festival back in our town.

We're not all like Lizzie only wanting a handful of pub sessions and small-scale dance displays on the prom or in obscure church halls on the outskirts of town.

AND this year, more than any other we will enjoy ourselves and look forward to a great Folk Week that people like you are just SO miffed about!

Sorry to disillusion all you McBrides, but I'm afraid that Sidmouth is now full of people who love the festival and the folk week and are prepared to support it in whatever way we can. We SO don't have time for Moaning, Stirring Minnies any more!!

The £160 season last year covered absolutely everything. People could easily switch between different types of event and different venues.

If someone buys the Ham series ticket (I don't consider it a season) they still have to pay for morning workshops and the LNE, and at a price of £138 they will want to get full use from their ticket, therefore the Bedford concerts, Manor Pavillion and Blackmore Gardens events will loose potential customers.
In addition to the Ham series you could also pay for a £90 social dance ticket from Roy Godswen.

The unfortunate consequence of operating different events as separate profit centres is that the organisers will be competing for ticket sales to avoid their own losses. I suspect the use of venue-specific series tickets is an attempt to lock in a group of customers rather than provide a better service to the audience.
This is understandable from a financial standpoint, there is no cross-subsidy between events, and advance sales with provide upfront working capital for the organiser, but it does mean that the audience splits into separate distinct tribes instead of crossing between categories and experiencing something new.
I have always enjoyed the freedom to float between different types of concert, dance and session, and have the serendipity of stumbling across an unexpected delight.
I'd suggest ignoring the limitations of series tickets, and go to different events as the mood takes you.

alan J.

Robbie, hear, hear, I could have written that myself. We are hoping to have a holiday in a nice place, with a few concerts thrown in of people we really want to see. And hopefully some dancing round the town.
If you buy a season ticket you're committing yourself to see everything - when one night you might just fancy an evening in the pub.

Seems fairly reasonable - you can pick and choose if you want

Really?

I just checked last years site and found the season ticket last year was £160. A Sidmouth season ticket for me and my kids has always been beyond my pocket. It is not any less affordable this year. What is on offer may be different this year but it needn't be more expensive.

I also find it puzzling that anyone would have booked to go to Sidmouth on the understanding that it would be a different kind of festival, with no season ticket, as has been said up until now and then change their mind and have to undo their commitments when one does become available but is expensive.

I willl be coming to Sidmouth for the first time this year because as a festival it has become affordable to me. There may be bits I decide not to buy into but I am really looking forward to meeting loads of friendly people and enjoying some wonderful music.

Dear Mudcatters,

First the good news:

The new 'fRoots' magazine carries an advert from Hobgoblin saying there will be a season ticket after all covering every afternoon and evening concert in the Ham Arena Marquee.

Well done Hobgoblin for sponsoring the Marquee concerts.

Well done Hobgoblin for listening to audience demands for a week-long season ticket.

Now the bad news:

The season ticket will cost £135. It only covers the Ham Marquee concerts. It does not cover any concerts, dances or other events elsewhere.

This must make it the most expensive festival season ticket anywhere in the U.K.

We always enjoy a range of concerts and dances at Sidmouth and have been attending for many years. We had hoped to support the Folk Week in 2005 but now feel it is being priced right out of our pocket when added to transport, accommodation, food and drink costs etc.

We have reluctantly cancelled our B&B booking today and reluctantly decided to take our custom elsewhere, probably to the Eastleigh Festival in Hampshire and / or Broadstairs in Kent.

We wish all involved with the Folk Week well and we hope to return in future years if its survives past 2005 but ticket prices have to be affordable and £135 per person for just one venue is not affordable to us.

Phil and Maggie

for a number of reasons isolated decisions have had to be taken, the organisors are doing their level best under difficult circumstances a botch up is not waht I said - a bodge yes - It has - against a lot of obstacles and expectations been made to work! - A ROUGH AND READY DEFINITION OF A BODGE!!

Please everyone read what is said not what you want it to say!

I support what is being done and I know the folk behind it are trying hard, have a wealth of expertise and are seeking to obtain that which they may not have when needed. Contrary to what many put out on this thread and others, they have the future of the festival, the promotion of Folk music and the protection of their clientel in mind at all times - the order here - before any one makes any assumtions that clientel is last has no relevance to the importance given to it or any other topic mentioned.

I also accept no aobligation legal or otherwise to justify this or any other email not concerning tickets on this thread!

OK - in a nutshell - THEY ARE WORKING HARD TO PROVIDE A GOOD WEEK - STOPPING TRYING TO KNOCK THEM DOWN LIKE SKITTLES!!!!!!

THIS THREAD WAS ABOUT TICKETS - I THINK IT HAS SERVED THAT PURPOSE!

Puzz;ed Pig..perhaps you haven't been bothering to read the rest of the thread? The festival may have no 'overall festival director' but is being organised by a group of people which includes a number of organisers of festivals and other events who know perfectly well what they are doing and have a long history of running events....it also includes professionals who are adequately able to advise on all matters of health, safety and legality. And they are doing it, not to make money, but because they care about Sidmouth festival and it's future, so they are going to do it right.

Good comment, Big Mal.
Folk is about doing things , like singing, playing and dancing.
Concerts can be seen at any time, after all, that is why we have Guest Artistes at folk clubs.
It seems that the British public seem to have lost the will to do things for themselves, preferring to do the "easy" thing and sit on their chumps while others do the work (i.e. entertain them).
Probably we have been pushed into this attitudde under the aegis of "Health and Safety".

I just wanted to reassure Bonecruncher that many of the people posting here do have considerable experience of organising folk festivals and folk venues. Blowzabella for one if you read his comments above.

It is precisely because we do know what is involved that we question the arrangements for Sidmouth this year and, specifically, whether the tented venues will ever get licensed.

Others can deride the postings on licensing issues as much as they like but no licence means no venue means no concerts.

Blowzabella is half-right in saying those planning to attend Sidmouth come-what-may won't worry about when tickets are going on sale but many others look at all the festival line-ups around this time of year and then decide which to attend.

I fear Sidmouth will lose a lot of these casual visitors this year due to the lack of confirmed detail on tickets, camp sites, venues and so on, also due to the lack of a season ticket.

However the real danger is that huge crowds still turn-up expecting the usual professional organisation only to then find the well-meaning but amateur set-up this year can't cope.

On the subject of how long and how many people it takes to organise a Festival...

The one that I'm involved with is organised and staged by a local authority. It provides a budget, but then sponsorship is raised to supplement that budget. Because of this, we don't know how much we can spend until we know what sponsors we have - and they don't tell you very far in advance at all! (This year, we didn't know the final budget until about seven weeks before the event!) On top of that, we don't have 'control' over any of the venues, so are subject to changes of tenancies etc, and not being sure if the new tenants will be people we can work with.

There are so many little bits of logistical things to do with staging a Festival - that take so long - and, often, you can't just do them once and be done - you've got to check and re-check that everything is in place.

We had a councillor once who said in a meeting - I don't understand why organising a Festival takes so long - all you do is make a few phone calls. Sometimes, it sounds to me as if some people posting here, who should know better, have the same attitude.

What does it matter if tickets aren't on sale for events at Sidmouth yet? If you've decided yu are going, get yourself onto the newsletter mailing list and you will, I imagine, be told when they are available. And why not, as suggested above, lend the organisers a hand in some way and stop whining!

(Another organiser, of another festival, stressed out)

Maybe things are "a bit of a botch-up" for this year, but have any of the doom and gloom merchants ever tried organising a folk festival?

Have they been on the organisation Committee and been involved with bookings of guests, site organisation, camping, dealing with local authorities, marquees, seating, venues other than on the festival site (hotels, pubs etc.) more dealings with local authorities, changes in legislation, yet more meetings with local authorities, and the miriad things needed for a successful festival?

The fact that a few people, working from their own homes and without the benefit of a professional full-time organisation have already offered us so much is something to be applauded, rather that described as a "botch-up".

As has been said before, it takes two years to organise a large festival and only slightly less for a smaller one. The current organisers are trying to give us a good festival within a timespan of mere months! For a number of them it could be a first time they have attempted to organise something on so large a scale.

Perhaps some of those with comments about poor organisation might like to offer their services NOW to the organisers, rather than expecting a free ticket for a few hours stewarding, then we might have a festival of which we can be justifiably proud.

Otherwise, perhaps it might be better to refrain from adverse comment and, for what we might receive, BE GRATEFUL!

Colyn.

There's always a first time Steve Harris. As so many people tragically discovered just a few weeks ago, you never can tell what the weather might bring.

And for Dave 'Breton Cap' it happened in the mid-90s when the Heineken 'Big Top' used to be sited at Falmer (O.K., not a seafront site like we used to have at Castle Field, Portsmouth but it's the fact that the entire thing blew down and we lost a whole day's show that matters).

I don't want to join in all the slagging-off of Sidmouth 2005, honest I don't, there's plenty of other people doing that it seems, all I want to do is warn of the problems that can occur with large tented structures when the wind gets up.

As for tickets which this thread was originally about, how refreshing to see Andy 'Fiddler' admit the whole thing is "a bit of a botch-up" this year.

Dear'Mikeeeeee'

Now listen....I've put out a poster with 'Do not let this man into Sidmouth under ANY circumstances!" written on it, because I've realised there is a common thread going on here. WHEREVER you seem to turn up...tents, big tops and marquees get blown away!! EEK!

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I think this MAY be happening because you're so FULL OF WIND that YOU are creating the VERY problem that is causing you, and the rest of us ;0)......SO much anxiety!!

Therefore...I'm sending you several packets of Gaviscon Tablets which are guaranteed to 'break down wind' and will leave you feeling calm, relaxed, faaaaar more attractive to everyone (!) and thus enable you to sit in tents, marquees and big tops quite safely from now on!

I've also spoken to the Health and Safety Ispectorate Directorate and suggested that EVERYONE coming to The Ham Marquee should partake of 2 tablets per concert.....just to be on the safe side! ;0)

Anyway, don't panic...the only things that will get 'Blown Away' at Sidmouth will be the minds of the jolly people who come to see all the brilliant acts happening down on The Ham.

Yours smilingly,

Lizzie :0)

PS 'Andy'...above. You've turned into Andy Andy! Are you related to Handy Andy at all? ;0) Sorry...couldn't resist that one! And now..back to THE STORY OF THE TICKETS!!

I believe this line started as a query about tickets, as usual we seem to have moved a long way form that subject!

I have discussed many apsects of this festival with many folk (including some of the promoters / organisers) let them get on with their job and please let's keep threads like this to teh topic they started on.

We are all doing a good job of talking down Sidmouth whay not start a thread on 'things that I know more about in organising a festival in Sidmouth than anyone else.

so it'll be dominated by Steve from sidmouth adn Lizzie at least it gives them a relevant forum rather than hijack another thread!

That is not an accusation you pair and you are not the only guilty ones.

Yes the ticket thing needs looking at and it does look like a bit of a bodge this year - I know there are reasons perhaps Folk South West can take that on board for 2006 in the maentime if anone can offer help and advice on this topic please do so.

Please don't get involved in defending my castigations in this post -after all that is my complaint!

Mike E, the people who are running Sidmouth this year are all people with an enormous combined experience of running events and festivals...they know all about that as well as you do and are organising appropriately.

Lizzie isn't 'making light' of the isuues, just trying to point out these facts to the doom and gloom merchants in her own, inimitable way.

And let's face it...it doesn't matter how much insurance you have...insurance doesn't save people's lives, it only pays 'compensation' afterwards. There seems to be this strange attitude these days that if you are well insured nothing will happen to you. Think about it.

In answer to Steve Harris who doubted whether concert tents have ever blown-down at festivals it happened several times to the Heineken 'Big Top' Festival in the mid-90s, held in a huge marquee on windy seafront sites just like The Ham.

At Brighton the entire 'Big Top' blew down overnight and we lost the whole of the following day's show.

At Portsmouth when the wind got up we had to stop the show half-way through a headline band's act and evacuate the tent.

And health & safety regulations are much tighter now than they were then!

You have to remember that there are power cables and lighting rigged to the sides and roof of the tent. Believe me, it really is dangerous if the wind gets up.

The council will insist on £15 million public liability insurance and a whole raft of safety measures before they licence the tent. That will cost a substantial sum of money... probably more than for the Knowle arena where the audience were out in the open.

Gordon Newton is well-respected as a music promoter and as a (retired) promoter myself I wish him lots of luck and very good weather.

Organising major outdoor events is, however, a very different ball-game to promoting concerts and dances inside halls.

I think some of the people voicing concern about licensing and safety issues have every right to be concerned until the licence is actually issued by the council.

Why do you think Steve Heap withdrew? If he couldn't make it all add up financially and if he'd had enough of the local council's licensing and environmental health officers do you really think others can make it all happen 'just like that' especially when they don't even have the £60,000 council funding that Steve enjoyed.

Unlike some on this board I have no axe to grind but I do feel an obligation as someone with a lifetime's experience in the events industry to warn the likes of Lizzie not to take licensing and safety issues so lightly.

At the end of the day you are talking about people's lives here. It may sound melodramatic but lives have been lost at major events in the UK and abroad when infrastructure failed.

None of us want to see that happen in Sidmouth.

No......Steve...you're COMPLETELY missing the point here!

You haven't got any photographs of what will be happening INSIDE the halls. It's what is going to take place INSIDE the halls that counts so much!

Most people are perfectly happy to have a different venue just for one year....that's why everyone is pulling together....to make Sidmouth happen!

Now listen....all this reminds me of when I used to be in The Sealed Knot, an English Civil War Re-enactment Society, many moons ago! We'd all camp out in the fields....sometimes quite a long way away from the battlefield, but we didn't mind.....we were all together and having the time of our lives. In the afternoons we'd all march down to wherever the battle was going to be...and home again afterwards.

Often there would be dancing....sometimes in beautiful, ancient pubs but more often than not in village halls, just like the ones in your photos. I can remember being all dressed up in my 'dancing gear', having been a plain old 'Camp Follower' all day in my hessian skirt and filthy blouse...authenticity!....and sometimes we'd turn up at a
1960's-70's style hall and I'd think..."Oh No!...not here! I'm all dressed up in silk, lace and pearls with feathers in my hair!....Where are the ancient beams?...Where is the history?"

But then...we'd all go INSIDE the hall and suddenly...all I saw were the other dancers....the walls, the harsh lighting...all melted away and the only thing that I was aware of was the excitement and the joy of the dancing....and a few Roundheads and Cavaliers of course!! ;0) ;0)

THAT is what counts Stevie Scarlett! And THAT is what Sidmouth Folk Week is ALL about this year too! Masses of people, coming together in a way they haven't done for YEARS! All taking part in something that is going to be very special.

And don't forget....Gordon has offered to do as much as he can to help with the dancing in The Ham Marquee....right by the ocean and no doubt he'll help wherever else he can too.

Read your new Newsletter as well, as that tells you that Ceilidhs are taking place in Blackmore Gardens, Ham Marquee and The Anchor Gardens amongst others.

Life is what you make it Steve....That goes for dancing too! Put even more effort and happiness into it this year than you EVER have before and you'll get SO much more back!

Give up being the Scientist and always searching desperately for the answers...the proof....let go of it all....and HAVE FAITH! Faith in yourself and faith in the people who KNOW what they are doing with the Sidmouth Folk Week, and faith in all the people who are coming to Sidmouth too.

Honestly.

I was a government scientist for most of my life - you can trust me.

Anyhow, the sun was shining (on Lizzie it was at any rate) and I went into town. Sunny, glorious, sullen, inward-looking Sidmouth. Then I took out my camera. How did the sun know this?

So the only photos you get are on a cold dismal cloudy day. I'll take some brighter ones when next we have a blue sky. I might even get Lizzie to pose for you all. Anyone taking bets?

How about a bit of habeas corpus on the side Lizzie? (HC = "Produce the body"). Prove to us that you really exist. You can have a webpage to yourself and a full frontal 800 by 600 in fine mode. You could be talent spotted.

In the meantime, while we grow old waiting, see the proposed dance venues here dance venues out of town .

I can do better than that with my new (secondhand) £10 digital camera! Watch this space. Just off to town now. Sunshine too!!!

I really don't know why some people here are so negative about the Ham - the only reason I have much faith in a big festival happening this year is that Gordon Newton has committed himself to the Ham and he has the money and experience to back up his promises. Best of luck to him too. If he makes money he will give it to the 2006 festival. If he loses money he will stand the loss himself.

He has also financed the superb glossy leaflets (copy of the latest one will be on my website later today). Without him I doubt much would happen - a personal view but one shared by other people in the town. Lack of up-front money has been a huge problem for the other organisers - as discussed at the last town meeting.

As for the fawning attitude of some organisers towards Sidmouth Town Council, it just shows how frightened they are of getting on the wrong side of certain people. Look how much grief Steve Heap had to suffer from petty minded nonentities.

The principal practical concern I have about the Ham (and the festival in general) is whether sufficient volunteer stewards will turn up and stay the course. If the Ham is used as Gordon suggests for concerts and dancing (he said he would give it free to anyone who wanted to use it outside of his concert slots) , then several times a day all the chairs (which have to be bolted together and to the floor for fire safety reasons) will have to be removed, then put back again, then checked and re-certified. Up to 900 chairs, several times a day???

It was 1970. I think. You know what they say about if you can remember...I forget the rest.

The fence was torn down and security went crazy, then the festival was declared free - there were rumours about the Black Panthers being there but all I saw were some rather grubby youths waving fists in the air and trying to look revolutionary. They failed.

I was interviewed for the TV - there was this man in a grey suit and pink shirt, 'These look weird enough' he said to his camera crew as they approached - I looked at him, then looked around, then back at him (the only guy in the arena to be wearing a suit)

The guy standing behind him doing the sound with the tribble on a stick was having severe trouble not laughing out loud for the whole of the interview. I did wonder if it affected the sound quality, and the interviewer kept glancing down at the microphone as it quivered and wondering what the Hell was going on behind him, I expect.

You just have to find what amusement you can in whatever situation you find yourself.

By the way the police in plain clothes really were still wearing their shiny black boots. They arrived on duty freshly washed and shaved and they did wander around saying 'want to score, man?' to everyone they met. I could only asume they did not want to arrest anyone and so deliberately made themselves conspicuous. It did add to the general weirdness of the experience.

I'm intrigued to know which Isle of Wight Pop Festival Anne attended? The 1970 Festival was certainly something of a riot but I don't think the revived 2003 and 2004 Festivals were all that riotous.

Steve Harris is right to mention that potential income is as important as expenditure when deciding on venues.

A tent on the Ham may well be better than an open arena when it pours with rain and may well attract more ticket-buying customers.

The downside is that the Ham can be pretty wild on a windy day and tented venues have to be evacuated in strong winds due to health and safety issues.

The safest venues are indoors.

How long before The Radway gets used again by the Festival?

The other half of the srory is INCOME.

When it rains, people are more likey to pay to get into a concert instead of lounging on the beach. Even if it's sunny, a lot of people will go to concerts. The old Arena could be deviod of even season ticket holders in bad weather - let alone people paying on the gate.

Lizzie - the only problem with all these artists you keep mentioning is that you still don't appear to have council approval for any venue that they can play in.

The arena is no more. The Bowd & Bulverton marquees are no more. The tent on The Ham is promised but not yet approved.

Can they all fit in The Manor Pavlion and Bedford Hotel?

I think not!

Maybe they're all going to play in 'Lizzie Towers' - Last Night's Fun in your living room and Show of Hands performing in your bedroom (and if that thought doesn't provoke a Lizzie-response then I don't know what will!).

No.....Puzzled Pig....organising a festival is only tricky if you don't know what you're doing!! ;0) Luckily The Sidmouth Folk Week organisers are right on the ball! It's in the hands of people who love it and who are supporting it with all their might!

Sally.....if you worried about Sidmouth....try Broadstairs then my deario....Mind you...all the questions that are constantly being asked of Sidmouth also apply to Broadstairs too of course. Now THERE'S a dilemma!! There are only two 100% certainties in life and that is....1)We Live 2)We Die.

But in between that time Sally.....fill your life with as much happiness, joy and love and as many Folk Weeks and Festivals as possible.

Fight for everything you believe in, everything that you hold dear and then....when your time comes...you'll go out with a huge smile on your face.

Oh.....and don't forget to smile at all the negative twits that you encounter along your way!! ;0) ;0) ;0)

Oh and Sally, amongst the huge amount of top artists now coming to Sidmouth we've also got Ashley Hutching's Rainbow Chasers and Last Night's Fun to look forward to. AND there are EVEN MORE yet to be announced.

Hope you're right Dave though I fear many of the costs will be the same at The Ham as in the arena... maybe even more for insurance in a tented venue plus the cost of providing seating.

Still... at least we'll be dry in a tent. I remember slithering and sliding down the arena in the mud. Not a happy memory!

As this thread was originally about tickets I do hope the various event organisers can sort something out soon and announce what the ticket arrangements will be.

But then I guess they have to be sure the costs are affordable and the marquee will be approved by the council before they can start selling tickets.

Who would want to be responsible for organising a festival? It all sounds very stressful indeed.

I think it was more to do with potential losses in the event of bad weather and the lack of support from Local Authorities.

Also when he was running the Carribean Night the Arena was all set up at the cost to the main festival. I think when he found out what he would have to fork out to set up the Arena it became clear that it would not be viable.

I think that the 800 seat marquee on the Ham is considerably less expensive to set up and will not be subect to the same potential losses in the event of the weather turning nasty.

Strange that Stuart Hughes dropped out of the arena "when the horrendous economics became apparent".

As he organised the Caribbean Night in the arena for several years, surely he had some knowledge of what the economics were?

If "the horrendous economics" were responsible for the scrapping of the arena shows, surely "horrendous economics" must also put a question-mark over the plans for The Ham?

I guess marquees, P.A., lights, power supplies, outside toilets, staging, fencing, dressing rooms, water supplies, insurance, seating etc. cost as much at The Ham as they did at the arena?

Whatever became of Councillor Whatshisname? Is he still involved in any way at all?

Just as all his arena concert plans bit the dust, word here in Devon is that the plans for a concert marquee on The Ham are also in trouble and unlikely to receive local authority approval.

At least the plans for dance sides, sessions in The Anchor, concerts in The Bedford & Manor Pavilion and dances in community halls look to be progressing more smoothly now.

I might get to see the Donkey Sanctuary this year. Perhaps even have a swim.

Andy

I read somewhere that the tickets will be on sale from May, but for the life of me I can't find the same site again. Come to Sidmouth anyway, even if you can't get into the big gigs there will still be pleanty to see, do (and join in with if you're that way inclined)

I feel sure Lynne and Lizzy are that way inclined [but then I've never met them] >:o)

Let me reassure you Greg. I have never put any message on mudcat before. I only recently found by accident that mudcat existed.

Neither am I anything to do with the previous organisers of the Sidmouth Festival. The only Festival I have ever helped with is the 'Return to Camden' London Irish Festival.

I am one of those people who still plans to attend Sidmouth this year despite all the adverse publicity but I don't want to book my usual hotel room until I know I can get tickets for the concerts I want to see.

I fully understand there is no season ticket this year. That disappoints me but it's not the end of the world. What concerns me is that the concerts in The Ham still don't appear confirmed.

Bedford, no problem. Manor Pavilion, fine I'm sure. I just hope that Derek & Co. can announce ticketting details soon for The Ham Marquee which is what really concerns me.

In hopeful anticipation I'll keep looking at the Folk Week website.

Best,
Andy Beggs

Greg, that thought did occur to me.

The ticket situation is quite clear...Sidmouth this year is not a festival as in the past, but is a series of events run by different individuals. Consequently there will be no overall ticket, but only tickets to different events. This should all be quite clear on the Sidmouth folk week website. From 2006 Sidmouth should be a 'proper' festival again.

The 'slick and efficient organisation of previous years' was done by a company whose business it is to run folk festivals. This year's is being run by a number of individuals who care about the festival and don't want it to die, but who have no funding from the council to call on. There is no 'overall' organisation running it, and since Mrs Casey's musci pulled out only a year ago, and it took them 2 years each time to plan for and organise each festival, it has all had to be done in much more of a hurry this time.

But perhaps you do know all this?

Love Lynne

I think you will find that there will be no "season" tickets this year.

Tickets for some events will be on sale in May.

Camping on the Bulverton site can be booked using the booking form downladable from www.sidmouthfolkweek.org.uk site.

BTW is this is the site you looked at? There are earlier sites that have been superceded and others that are not as helpful.

Well, the reason is, Andy Beggs, that the organisation is different from last year. But I cant help being just the teeeeeeeeensiest bit suspicious that you might be quite well aware of that fact. And I'm sticking my neck out here, but is it just barely possible that you might have participated in this controversy before, under a variety of other assumed names?

I am trying to find out how to buy tickets for Sidmouth Folk Week.

I've tried the Sidmouth Folk week website and newsletter contacts but nobody seems to know what's happening.

I keep getting told that "discussions are continuing" or "details are still being finalised". I'm passed from promoter to organiser to promoter again but still nobody can tell me when tickets for the main concerts will be on sale or how the promised discounts for Folk Week supporters will actually operate.

Confusion reigns! How very different to the slick and efficient organisation of previous years.

There seem to be an awful lot of people working very hard to make Sidmouth happen but one of them really needs to sort out the ticketting operation and fast before the likes of me decide to take our custom elsewhere.

Yours in increasing frustration
Andy Beggs from London
